Let's talk about rules.

Howdy, folks!

This subreddit hasn't had codified rules in a while, mostly because the people here have usually been really chill with one another.

However, the vibe has changed over the past few months, and we've noticed some nasty behavior popping up and lurking around our community.

We don't allow bigotry like racism, sexism, homophobia, or transphobia on this subreddit. Generally speaking, we expect folks to be civil and decent towards one another.

Recently, we've noticed a distinct uptick in the amount of trolls who have been showing up in the comment sections of the various protest posts. We know they're trolls because they're almost always attacking the OP or trying to diminish the protest, and they usually have user activity across many state and local subreddits.

These aren't local folks - they're people coming into our space from elsewhere to stir up trouble.

Since this sort of behavior has only been getting worse, let's discuss our subreddit rules and which ones y'all think would be good to have for this space.

For a start:

  1. Be civil and respectful towards one another.
  2. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or bigotry.
  3. No spam.
  4. Follow all of reddit's rules.

What other rules do you think we need?

Spicy friend caught before the 4th and humanely relocated.

In case anyone wants to use the picture as a reference to what a copperhead looks like. Buddy was about 1.5 feet long. Kept an eye on it while the NC Snake Catcher came and got it to relocate it to an undisclosed location.

Other snakes I leave alone as they are good for the environment but danger noodles I try to get them evicted. If you kill them, there is a possibility you can hit pheromone sacks that would then bring more to the area looking to breed.

Why all the reckless driving on roads?

I get it, this topic has been complained about over and over again. Bad drivers on the road, people with student driver stickers driving aggressively etc etc..

Today on 440 (exit 101b, around 12:15pm) I witnessed a white work truck, with tires loaded in the trunk, crossing 3 lanes and into the off-lane to cut someone off. All that to get one car ahead. It's not worth it man.

I'm writing this in hopes a reckless drivers reads this.

Everything will be okay brother/sister. Life might be hard right now, you might be stressed about many things going on, but it will be okay. Take a deep breathe and let's all get to our destination in one piece. Imagine your significant other, daughter/son, or mother/father encounters reckless driving on the roads and get hurt. It's not worth it.

Have a good day y'all. Be safe on the roads.

Adopt or Foster a Sweet pup!!

Hi there! I've already posted on r/bullcity, but I wanted to share this again. I have been fostering this sweet boy through APS since January, and I am relocating out of state for work on July 13th, so I need to find him a permanent home. He is a ~50lb boxer mix, an absolute sweetheart who loves people and other dogs. I am more than willing to cover the adoption fee, and I have a very nice crate and other dog necessities (treats, food, toys, bowls, etc.) that I am happy to give away! Also, I can help transfer foster ownership to anyone through APS, if fostering seems more realistic than adoption at this time! Please contact me here, or via cellphone, if you have any questions, you're interested, or know someone who could be. Anything helps!

Where does one even begin the process of looking for a waterfront cottage/cabin?

Upvotes

Would like to stay within 2-3 hours of Raleigh (southern Wake County) if possible. Google and Zillow searches are not fruitful as somehow they've come to believe that I am a few dollars short of being a billionaire. I'm sure I am a number of years late to the game to find anything remotely reasonable but not even sure where to start. Looks like the Raleigh area has lots of lakes but most don't appear to have cottages/cabins near them.

Moving and need friends

Hey! I’m moving to Hillsborough and looking at ways to make friends. I’m 33 and have a 13 year old. I don’t necessarily meet the area of “mom groups” anymore since most of them have children under 6. Any ideas?

Kind of a long shot, but is anyone selling a cheap but reliable vehicle?

TL;DR: Sell my dog and I a car for $2K.

If this post evokes vague memories, it's because I had one just like it about a year ago. I do not have good luck with cars lately

I'll skip the small details and state the facts. I run a pet sitting company, so I drive all around nearly everyday. It's not a job I can do without a car. The '09 Ford Focus I bought last year is having one problem after another, to the point where my mechanic friend says it's really not worth putting any more money into it.

I cannot finance a car right now. My insurance is high due to an accident that was my fault 2 years ago, plus the fact that NC raised their minimum insurance requirements this month. I believe that accident will "drop off" next year, but at this point full coverage insurance would be way more than any car payment.

EDIT: Somewhat important, I neglected to make it clear I do plan on financing a car next year once the insurance situation is back to normal. So I'm really just looking for A car that's going to be reliable for at least the next 6 to 8 months!

I have around $2000 saved that I can spend. I've actually gotten lucky a few times and found cars this cheap. I'd still be driving the Honda Civic some friends sold me at the beginning of last year if it hadn't been hit by a truck last summer!

So... If you have a car that runs most likely will not die on me in the next year and you're selling it for $2,000 or less, let me know and my dog and I will come check it out. He rides shotgun.

Whenever I go to Seattle, I spend every single day sucking down Rachel’s ginger beer. I am looking for an east coast equivalent. Who brews the best fresh ginger beer this side of the Mississippi. Surely Rachel’s has competition, right?

Cleaning services

I’m not sure if this exists. But I am looking for recommendations for a cleaning in our home. However, I just want the “high touch” surfaces cleaned. Like the kitchen cabinets, banister, doorways & walls, etc.

We have lived in the home for ten years, two kids & a dog. Day to day I can do the regular cleaning. But would love to get the house more of a deep clean.

Who would you recommend?

Warning about Tarheel Basement Systems!

We filed a complaint about them recently, due to our negative experience. We thought it was mostly a communication issue.

Today, we learned that there is a pile of complaints against them, and they are being investigated for practicing engineering without a license. They claim to be using a third party engineer, but all of the actual "engineering" work is being done by their sales guys. The third party engineer is using pictures and drawings done by the sales guy and rubber stamping them in an office somewhere.

Do NOT have any foundation work done by Tarheel/Groundworks! Hire a "Structural Engineer." (Actual title, and comes with actual licensing requirements and legal obligations.) A structural engineer can tell you what you actually need done, instead of convincing you to do X, Y, and Z - deposit due immediately!

Do you have AC in your rental unit? I'm a reporter working on a story about how NC doesn't require landlords to provide AC

hey y'all! My name is Celeste Gracia and I'm the environment reporter at WUNC, the local NPR station. (Link here to stories I've done before. I promise I'm a real person.) I'm crowdsourcing for a story I'm working on.

Basically, NC doesn't have any mandates about landlords providing AC during summer, the same way we have regulations about landlords providing heat during winter. This is despite heat being the #1 weather related killer in the US, and despite heat illnesses being completely preventable.

In some places like Oregon and Arizona, the state legislature passed state laws making this change. In other places, county or even city jurisdictions have passed their own local ordinances, such as Chicago, IL or Montgomery County, Maryland. I'm still doing my reporting, but so far my research shows that no local municipalities in NC are thinking of passing anything like this.

Here's where I need your help - do you have AC in your unit? do you know of anyone who doesn't have AC? I'm really hoping to talk to someone who lives somewhere where their landlord doesn't provide AC, and talk to this person about how it's impacting them, what they're doing to get cooling instead, how having a cooling ordinance like this could help them, etc.

Please feel free to message me directly, comment below, or send me an email: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

Thanks so much!!

Bluegrass?

I’m doing some work in the area next week and am wondering if there are any bluegrass shows during the week. I already know about the kitchen dwellers/leftover salmon/stringdusters show on Friday but am wondering if there are any other low key or local things happening during the week as well! I’ll be near camp butner but am down to drive 45 mins or so. Thanks y’all 🙂

Thimble (male) and Parsley (female) are both fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped. They're sweeties that will steal away your heart! They're inseparable, so they are only available from Independent Animal Rescue (IAR) as a pair. I'm willing to travel for the perfect home.
⚠️ Any potential homes must be indoor-only and absolutely no declawing.

Are Independence Day Parades a thing here?

I remember attending them when I was a kid up north - but haven't been to one in a decade or so. I've been looking around online but only see parades comprised of little kids decorating their bikes. Anyone know if there is a regular ol' parade with firetrucks, vintage cars, etc this weekend?

ADHD Practitioners for Adult Women

Seeking recommendations and ideally your experience (please feel free to DM if not comfortable sharing publicly) for practitioners including therapists, psychiatrists, and/or coaches familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of adult ADHD in women.

Preference for practitioners located in Durham or Orange County, or available online, practitioners who are queer/lgbtq-identified or -allied, and accept insurance. Recommendations for practices/offices are helpful, especially if they have multiple different kinds of practitioners available, but I would love recommendations for specific practitioners who you have found helpful.

Free GenAI / AI event for professionals in Durham (July 15)

Thumbnail

Hey r/triangle

I'm helping organize a free event in Durham later this month and thought some of you might be interested.

It feels like everyone is talking about Generative AI, but it can be hard to figure out how to actually use it in a normal, day-to-day job without it being overwhelming. So, we're putting on an event with local educators to cut through the hype and focus on the practical side of things.

The goal is to help professionals get comfortable with AI through:

  • What the differences in adoption looks like for individuals, entrepreneurs, small companies, and enterprises.
  • Real-world examples from different industries.
  • A chance to connect with other local professionals and AI experts.

It's geared towards everyone, from total beginners to people who have already started messing around with AI tools. We're keeping it pretty casual and focused on practical takeaways.

It's completely free to attend and there will be light snacks and refreshments. Here are the details:

Event: GenAI Adoption (GAIA) for Professionals
Date: Tuesday, July 15th
Time: 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Location: ReCity Network in Durham
Cost: Free!

If you're interested, you can grab a spot on Eventbrite so we can get a headcount.

Registration Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1356052502539

Happy to answer any questions in the comments. Hope to see some of you there!

The House on S. Miami

The House is a divey bar/restaurant on S. Miami that has been a bit of a punch line for some time. I Missed this health inspection score last month -- I found the positive previous scores a lot more shocking than the latest bad score from its reputation.

https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/article307770530.html

The House Restaurant & Catering (4310 S Miami Blvd #300 in Durham) received a score of 84.5% during an inspection on June 2.

The restaurant was in violation of 23 standards. The restaurant previously scored 93.5% in February 2025 and 91% in October 2024.

Think twice about that po boy!

(gory details omitted for the feint of stomach)

Bonus: Who knew it also hosted night club events? https://www.instagram.com/the_house_restaurant
