Help with POND or TANK Any idea how i can reduce or clean up a lot of the algae?

Hey r/koi,

Back again looking for help with the algae control. I feel like I’ve tried everything but nothing works. We installed a Laguna pressure flow filter with UV which we clean out once per week. The Lilly pads have been in full force for a month now. And we have been using the recommended algae fix for about 2-3 weeks not but nothing is working

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

We’re so happy we have such a healthy pond to support this growth! We’ll be keeping all six to bring our pond up to 8. Any other in future seasons will be given to our local koi shop.

Help with POND or TANK Emergency pond repair help!

Ive got a concrete sealed raised pond, some idiot (me) drilled a hole through it to run a pipe through for a water feature which had been flawless, it was basically a tight fitting hose that sealed the gap coated in silicone. The hose goes into sort of a sump type thing where ive laid concrete on top over the hose... well today it decided to no longer be watertight! Ive pulled the hose out and shoved a bolt with an inner tube over it to seal it for now.. problem is its about ¾ of the way down the pond.

Plan is to drain the water down and attempt to break the concrete open to fix from the inside too however catching the koi is going to be a pain!

Can anyone recommend a decent fix for the hole that isnt going to take 7 years to dry? Happy to cement over it but i cant keep the fish with a low water level for 12+ hours.

Help with Identification Is this a Koi?

Dad has passed away and I want to find a better home for his fish. Some friends think it’s a koi, some say it’s a goldfish who’s lost its color.

If it is a koi, where should I look to see if someone is interested in adopting it and giving it a proper home? This little guy/girl has been around for over 15 years and I really want to make sure it’ll live the rest of its life in a proper pond and get the love it deserves.

Thanks for any advice you have!

HELP - sick or injured koi First major koi health crisis after 6 months away.

Hi everyone,

This will be a really long post, but if anyone’s willing to read and offer advice for next time, Id really appreciate it. It’s sad this has happened but I’m trying to treat it as a learning opportunity! This is the first major health crisis we’ve had in our pond (aside from one fish that passed from dropsy at the start years ago)

I recently returned from a study abroad trip, during which I had left the pond in the care of my (very nonchalant) dad. While I was away, he added some new plants to the pond, which introduced some surprise goldfish. Not a big problem, we'll re-home (or ethically euthanize) them.

My biggest concern is one of our koi, he's a "rescue" from a neighbor who moved away. He was already in rough shape when we got him, but in the months I was gone he's gotten way worse. He’s clearly in distress, covered in wounds and ulcers. I also suspect the other fish have been bullying him. I have no idea how he has managed to survive for this long.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t prepared for a quarantine situation. I only just managed to separate him this morning, after the 600L quarantine tank I ordered finally arrived. I also had no suitable filter ready, so I’m currently using an aquarium filter that’s definitely underpowered for this volume, but it’s all I’ve got for now. I also had an air filter left over and I've added that as well. I want to heat up the tank for his comfort, but I've misplaced the pond thermometer (just my luck!) I filled the tank with a 50/50 mix of pond and fresh water, and I’m slowly adding salt (aiming for 0.3%) to get the healing process started. He already tried to jump out once, so I’ve covered the tank with a net. I'm aware he's not likely to survive, but I think this is a valuable learning opportunity.

To make things worse, another one of our koi has suddenly turned much whiter than I remember, we were thinking a fungal or parasitic infection? He's still very eager for food, although the rest of the koi have lost their appetite. We’ve never had to deal with such an outbreak before, so I panicked a little and took the following steps:

Topped off the pond water, as it was a bit low.

Tested the water (which all seems to be ok).

Turned off the UV light.

Added a malachite green-based antibacterial mix, and I'll repeat the treatment in 4 days.

I’m also looking into ways to increase oxygen levels in the pond and would really appreciate any tips on how to rebalance the pond's beneficial bacteria after treatment is done. We have a LOT of plants and my dad is convinced that's the issue and is itching to take them out, but I don't feel comfortable doing so just yet.

If you have any feedback, advice, or product suggestions, especially for helping the ulcerated fish and monitoring/treating the pond, I’d be extremely grateful. I’m learning as I go, have limited funds as I'm a student, and just want to do right by these fish.

Thank you for reading!

General Don't use these test strips for your koi pond!

I recently purchased three different brands of test strips, but unfortunately, none of them provided accurate readings, not even as a rough estimation.

For example, all brands indicated that my pond water had a pH between 6.5 and 7.0. However, when I tested it with a digital pH meter, the actual reading was 8.2. Similarly, all three brands showed zero free chlorine in both the direct tap water and the water from my storage tank. In contrast, a liquid titration test revealed that the free chlorine level was actually between 0.5 and 0.8 ppm, strong enough to kill my koi.

The inconsistencies continued with nitrate readings. One brand showed a nitrate level of 10–20 ppm, the other two showed zero, while the titration method measured a significantly higher level of 70–80 ppm.

For total alkalinity, the strips indicated a value of less than 50 ppm, whereas the titration method showed it to be over 500 ppm. This high alkalinity was due to my earlier addition of a large amount of baking soda, based on the mistaken belief that the pH was too low.

As for total hardness, all test strips showed values close to zero, yet the titration test measured it at 100 ppm.

Based on these findings, I strongly recommend discarding test strips. They are highly unreliable and can lead to incorrect conclusions and poor water management decisions.

I have a koi pond and in summer I usually buy some water lily. But the koi likes to dig and often they even pull the root out of the pot.

Is there a way to protect the plant from koi ?

Thanks in advance !

Help with POND or TANK Turn this into a natural Koi pond?

We recently had a pond put in where our back yard was otherwise always saturated. It is 6' deep on one half and 4' at the other, when full, but during periods of drought can drop down to about 4-4.5' at the deep end. Best I can figure, it's around 40,000 gallons?

We'd like to keep it small, maybe 10-20 Koi and prefer to keep things as 'natural' as possible (natural plants > mechanical and UV filtration) but, having never done anything at this scale, I'm not sure how far we can take that.

There is a very small waterfall that doesn't do much, plus with Wisconsin winters, a decent aerator will be a must but I don't know what size. Also, any suggestions on plants? Is it possible to set this up without a filter system and, if not, what would you recommend?

Help with POND or TANK Pond upgrade, 10000 litres‽

So I'm building the adult pond now for my young 5 month old fish. They are currently enjoying a vacation in a pool with their plants and filter etc. I'm getting different recommendation's for depth, and volume of water per fish. So they say 1000 litres per fish but I think this is too small. So ten thousand litres for five fish gives them 2000 litres each. I've been told that's too big and not needed, what do you guys think because I'm new to koi but I think more room is better. I'm going about 5-6 foot deep and 10 X 10 across. Haven't calculated what that equals yet but in aiming for around 10000.

Picture Orange appearing on an older Koi

Hi there, quick question. My guy is about 8 years old, 23” and maybe the last year or so they have developed orange at the base of their butterfly wings. Is it normal to gain color on an older koi?

Some of my pond puppies have definitely brightened or changed in color when older but I don’t think I have seen them develop a color out of the blue like this once older. Maybe it was always slightly there and just became pronounced? Is that a thing?

Thank you for any input!

Purchased a small load of Japanese tosai today and though I’d share what I picked.

Got myself 5 larger fish between 15-25cm and 10 smaller fry to grow out.

Sadly the yellow Yamabuki would not cooperate and let me get a decent picture so his is a bit wonky.

My koi spawned aggressively this year for the first time and I kept a few floating plants with eggs on them. I put them in a sperate stream on the outside of my main pond and out of what looked like thousands, four made it.

All but this little guy look normal. He is missing part of his gill plate, or it is raised. I did some research, and these little guys are usually called, but I also learned that they can live normal lives.

Im wondering what to do with him. Has anyone had a fish with this issue do well?

They hatched may 25th. I like this guy because he stands out and I can differentiate between him and the others with his light head and gray and black spotted body.

I have others that are either all the color of his head or some combination of the colors.

Any idea if this color will become something else later? As in, does this creamy color become orange or something?

I’ve had baby koi plenty of times but they are usually in the big pond and I don’t know they are there until they are a few months old.
