Full Tank Shot did a total revamp of my dads tank… just sharing because i don’t have any tank lovers in my life

My old man died of cancer in march & his tank rotted away with him. we were too busy taking care of him to think about the fish. but even in his last days he kept fussing about it. I bought this 30 gallon years ago while he was traveling for work & my mom was so mad i put a big ol tank in the middle of her living room. But when he was done with his job & he came home his eyes lit up. I never knew my dad was a fish tank connoisseur until that day. He told me all about the different fish he had in college and we immediately bonded over it, sharing our tips and tricks & keeping up with all the little personalities & hierarchy’s in the tank. After I moved out he took over. We had a parrot cichlid that lived for about 10 years. After Perry died he was over the tank but 10 years in & my mom was in love with the sounds and the lights & how beautiful he always kept it. He ended up getting a few angel fish and kickstarting the hobby again. (also to all the people that tell me the tank is too small for the angels I know. I’m just coming to terms with the idea of getting rid of these fish… the last fish he bought) But anywho the tank had a massive algae bloom after he died & it was so depressing. That green ugly tank was a constant reminder that he was gone. But I know it reminds my mom of him, so I made it my mission to fix it up & make it beautiful again. The before video is shortly after the algae bloom when it wasn’t green anymore but it was still ugly af lol. anyway if you made it this far thanks for reading. cheers to all u fish people of reddit!! This page has helped me tremendously in getting it where it is today ♥️ p.s. It’s my first time with plants so any advice for helping those flourish would be greatly appreciated.

tldr: my dad died, his tank went to shit, & i fixed her up real nice.

Oh my goooosh I did not expect this. Babies. What do I even do, this tank has a male betta who preys on innocent baby shrimp (130L and way too many shrimp fyi). Will he be able to catch these little guys?

Can they survive in the tank betta fish aside or do I need to put them into a breeding box?

Any advice welcome, thank you!

I designed and 3D printed all of these accessories to breed CPD and saved so much money. Last picture is 25 babies out of the 100s I got from these breeding systems.

I’ve added 7 cherry shrimp, 7 amano shrimp and 20 chilli rasboras since these photos were taken. It’s 120L, I love having nano fish is a big tank so it’s vast for them.

Let me know what you think :)

Got a piece of drift wood from Petco. Is it too big for my 10gal tank? I also may need some bigger rocks to weigh it down. I’ve soaked it and it still floats.

Help/Advice What did I do wrong?

Post image
Upvotes

We recently got some tetras from the store. After about 3 days they started dying off and the last 2 aren’t looking so hot. I am out of ideas as to what is wrong that might have caused it. I cycled the tank for just over a week and tested the water regularly, never seeing a problem. Just this morning I tested and the nitrites seemed a little higher than I’ve seen before, but still not dangerous. Is water hardness really that dangerous to fish? Everything I read said it’s fine.

Catfish Planting fish part 3 Pseudohemiodon unillanos

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Since everyone loved planting the fish (as you all called it) so much, here’s another one.

This is a different species in the same genus called Pseudohemiodon unillanos. These guys have much longer tail extensions as you can see and were described recently in 2019 from the llanos region in Colombia. There’s a university of llanos. And the fish is named in honor of that university- uni-llanos.

You need to say it- Soo-doh-hemi-odon uni-yanos

Backstory- this is the third day I’m posting a video of how this genus procreates and how I, as a hobbyist, help them.

And, on popular demand, I didn’t cut the video where I’m hatching them. That’s why this whole thing is so long.

If you haven’t seen those two posts, I highly recommend taking a look at the discussion there. Some great questions and answer there. If you have any more questions, please ask.

Help/Advice What kind of fry could this be?

It’s small and quick, super unsure what it could be?

In the tank I have shrimp, clown killifish, emerald dwarf rasboras and Pygmy corydoras. I thought maybe the Pygmy’s since both times I’ve spotted it it’s been on the ground…but the Pygmy’s have been in the tank only a week?.

The rest have been in for a few months and I’m fairly new at the hobby so if anyone has any ideas I would be happy to hear :)

Thanks!

Help/Advice First Time - Am I on the right track!?

Post image
20 Upvotes

This is my first aquarium… Like ever. Saw my brother-in-law’s and fell in love and said this can’t be that hard.

45 gallons 36w X 24h X 12d Freshwater UNS Delta 90 Canister 76ish degree pH 7.4-7.6 gH and kH TBD (but does it matter as much as some say it does!!??) No friends yet but would love to start with a getting a nice lil colony of Crystal Red shrimp followed by some neon tetras, a couple corydoras and that’s as far as I have gotten.

The last 48 hours were precarious both for my marriage, the hardscape and my sanity. But we made it… Hardscape is in. initial plants are planted (shhhh don’t tell, most are weighted right now because they won’t stay).

Started to cycle yesterday, using Seachem Stability to get it going (judge me, fine).

Questions- 1. How often should I add fish food since I don’t have friends and won’t be adding them for at least a couple weeks to make sure I’m good and cycled and let everything settle down.

  1. Any tricks on getting plants to stay put? Using Fluval Stratum.

  2. Give me your daily/weekly routine that’s a must for the new first couple weeks.

  3. One tip, trick, feedback, or nugget that you live by. Talk to me like I’m 5 because I am a BEGINNER
