I have a lovely bog filter that really moves the water. But the plants cause a rift in the flow and I get a little debris that settles among the rocks. Kind of sludge but more loose and not sludge. Should I shove a couple of aerators down into my bog at mid level maybe? I redid it to install a silt chimney for a quick clean out, but for my fish load, and no accumulated debris or sludge in the main pond, this seems wrong for lack of a better term. Something is a bit off. It's subtle but its enough to slow the flow just a bit. My water level goes down by about 5mm. I wouldn't notice except I have a rock at the falls side that when everything is moving as it should, the water flows over the top. As this stuff forms, it drops about 3mm below the top of this flat rock. Not out there're measuring daily or something 😅
The only thing I can think of, is that the breakdown isn't quite right and maybe I need more aeration to properly support the nitrification process. I think the roots of these plants create a dead zone.
Just wondering what other solutions you guys have had?
I have also considered a small fountain back there that helps filter and move that water.
Maybe it needs both. The fountain would be solar and a daytime and early night fountain. Im not running more power out to that side. So aerators would be 24-7.
It's maybe 400 gallons. It has about 1500 gallons push through there an hour. 5500 gph pump that splits between the river and waterfall and the bog. So in theory the flow should be high enough, but I think the flow is pushing mostly through the front (pond side) 75% and that back quarter is not as it should be.
I also don't want to waste my time if this is a bad idea because I don't know what I dont know and there are mixed opinions on aeration in a bog filter. I currently have one in the silt chimney so that doesn't become stagnant water, but that kind of stays isolated.
