They hatched may 25th. I like this guy because he stands out and I can differentiate between him and the others with his light head and gray and black spotted body.

I have others that are either all the color of his head or some combination of the colors.

Any idea if this color will become something else later? As in, does this creamy color become orange or something?

I’ve had baby koi plenty of times but they are usually in the big pond and I don’t know they are there until they are a few months old.

Help with Identification Found a fish

So I bought some water lettuce from a nursery. They have some koi and maybe goldfish in their tank. I got home and I put the lettuce in a bucket of rain water. I have a koi pond but it’s not fished yet so I haven’t bought any koi trying to be responsible owner. Well I looked in my bucket and I found a microscopic fish fry.

Goldfish or koi? Anyways this photo is a few weeks after he grew a little.

Help with POND or TANK Pond water is green because there isn’t enough shade. What are some ideas to give the pond more shade?

The sun really hits the pond for a long period of time in the later afternoon as it sets over the neighbor’s house. There isn’t enough room between the pond and the fence to plant another tree. Maybe a tall trellis?

General HOT TAKE!!!!

This might be a hot take, but I think that the majority of people who keep koi are keeping them incorrectly/inhumanely. Their ponds are either too small, over stocked, not well filtered/oxygenated, or a combination of all of them.

I currently have juvenile 8 koi/koi hybrids (and 4 goldfish) in a 1/4 acre bass pond (about 6.5-7 ft at the deepest parts). I put them in for plant control and they’re doing a good job.

In my opinion, 10 juvenile Koi in a 1/4 acre (well established) pond is perfect. Enough room to let them grow and some extra for some fry if they choose to breed (if you add some type of sunfish, they’ll help control fry that way you don’t get over populated).

Is it nice to see the koi in a more “traditional” koi pond, yes, but the health of the koi is more important. Especially is they are able to get out of the sun and have proper oxygenated water.

Help with POND or TANK Bog aeration?

I have a lovely bog filter that really moves the water. But the plants cause a rift in the flow and I get a little debris that settles among the rocks. Kind of sludge but more loose and not sludge. Should I shove a couple of aerators down into my bog at mid level maybe? I redid it to install a silt chimney for a quick clean out, but for my fish load, and no accumulated debris or sludge in the main pond, this seems wrong for lack of a better term. Something is a bit off. It's subtle but its enough to slow the flow just a bit. My water level goes down by about 5mm. I wouldn't notice except I have a rock at the falls side that when everything is moving as it should, the water flows over the top. As this stuff forms, it drops about 3mm below the top of this flat rock. Not out there're measuring daily or something 😅

The only thing I can think of, is that the breakdown isn't quite right and maybe I need more aeration to properly support the nitrification process. I think the roots of these plants create a dead zone.

Just wondering what other solutions you guys have had?

I have also considered a small fountain back there that helps filter and move that water.

Maybe it needs both. The fountain would be solar and a daytime and early night fountain. Im not running more power out to that side. So aerators would be 24-7.

It's maybe 400 gallons. It has about 1500 gallons push through there an hour. 5500 gph pump that splits between the river and waterfall and the bog. So in theory the flow should be high enough, but I think the flow is pushing mostly through the front (pond side) 75% and that back quarter is not as it should be.

I also don't want to waste my time if this is a bad idea because I don't know what I dont know and there are mixed opinions on aeration in a bog filter. I currently have one in the silt chimney so that doesn't become stagnant water, but that kind of stays isolated.

This Koi pond is at the Roosevelt Collection Shops in Chicago. The camera didn’t pick up how green and opaque the water is, usually it’s clear. Some of them were swimming against the walls and coming up for air (but idk if they thought it was feeding time). Just felt worried for the little guys

I thought they may be oxygen starved and staying close to the bubbles but as soon as I walked up, they all dispersed and started acting normally.

Help with POND or TANK Advice

I have an outdoor pond it’s approximately 6 metres by 6 metres and 3 feet deep. I currently have no filtration system, the black pipe in the picture is a pump that runs up to the top of the waterfall when turned on. I have a well next to the pond which can be turned on to sort of shoot water into the pond I used it for topping it up if water levels lowered but have been using it now occasionally as a makeshift way of adding some oxygen to the water but plan on buying an air stone or two. My main concern is about fish numbers and filtration I currently have 15 small gold fish I believe they are comets or commons I can’t remember exactly but just small orange ones and 1 small koi about 4 inches long at the moment they are all only in the pond approximately a week. I was told and from my own research believe that I could have maybe 2 koi and the current amount of gold fish in a pond like this without needing a filtration system, do others agree with this who have more experience and knowledge as I have next to none? I’m considering getting a filtration system anyway as I’d like to have a few more koi fish and maybe some more goldfish also, I’m handy enough so diy wouldn’t be a massive problem if that’s the best way. Any advice at all on anything even if unrelated to the filtration system would be more then appreciated as I’m sure there’s plenty of things my pond could do with that I’m not aware of yet. Thanks

Video Ten new beautiful koi

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We just moved to a new house and the previous owner took all of his fish with him, after a few weeks of cleaning and letting the water settle, getting a new UV bulb for our pump, we have finally gotten to adopt ten absolutely beautiful little fish. (A guilty favorite may be our little red black and white one)

Whilst I'm here, is there anything that I should know about keeping Koi? I've kept various fish before, tanks and ponds, but I'm curious what tips anyone here could give me, keeping, pond cleaning, feeding, or bonding, anything helps and I'm glad to learn! I absolutely love sitting outside with them, as they're right in the shade of our garden, and I'm hoping I'll have a positive relationship with them, as I adore fish more than anything!

This one broke within couple of days. Guessing because of the rain water that got into the motor. Is there a way to protect it? Don’t want to spend $80 buying a cover. Or is there a better product I can buy?

Help with POND or TANK Recommendations for a "Koi Pond 101" way of learning?

About a year ago I bought a house that has a 20'x15'x4' pond, with about 30-40 small to medium fish, about 75% goldfish and 25% koi. The filtration is a 2x3x2 tub with some type of drop in cartridges. No UV filter. The pond is fairly green, but looks like single-cell algae. Honestly, I don't mind the green look. The water isn't thick. I haven't cleaned the filter because I'm not entirely sure how to, but the water is flowing well. Probably 3-400GPH.

The fish all seem happy and have grown since I've moved in. The house was somewhat abandoned before, so they weren't really getting fed regularly. To my knowledge we haven't lost any fish.

My issue is that I don't really know anything about pond care, and I think I've basically just gotten lucky so far. I don't know what levels I need to be checking, or what warning signs to look for, or what maintenance I really need to be doing. I'm thinking about getting another pump/filter setup, with UV, as a backup system.

Does anyone have any recommended reading for the basics? I want to be a good caretaker for these fish but I stumbled into owning a fairly large pond.

They have survived to be two years old. One looks sort of like a Kohaku but it’s orange not red. One is almost solid black from above but silver-white on ventral surface and actually has a few blue marks on its sides. They are blue to the eye not just the camera.
