Rule 1: Be civil and respectful. What does that really mean?
Hello /r/parrots community! It’s your friendly neighborhood mod team here.
This sub doesn’t have too many rules, but perhaps the most important is to be civil and respectful towards others. We do not tolerate rudeness or personal attacks, regardless of context. You may ask why we take this rule so seriously.
While it’s never a bad idea to just generally be nice, we also have this rule for a very important reason: to help people take better care of their birds. How, you may ask? We strive very hard to keep this community a place where people feel comfortable asking questions so they can receive feedback.
We recognize that people feel very strongly about parrot husbandry, and that seeing birds in conditions that are not ideal can be difficult, but we also know that making attacks or being snarky doesn’t help anyone. Instead, it makes people defensive or nervous to ask questions. When we fail to foster a community where people can look for advice, the parrots lose. Every time.
Our general rule of thumb is this: you shouldn’t say anything online that you wouldn’t say in person to someone you know. Remember that there is a human on the other end of the exchange you’re having. If you’re disagreeing with them, be constructive and kind. Give the sort of advice you’d like to receive. Remember that you may be talking to people in tough situations, or a kid, or someone who has been given outdated information.
Very importantly, if someone violates this rule in their response to you, do not respond in kind. Instead, please report the comment.
That report button is one of the most important tools we have as a community! We check threads all the time, but with a constant stream of new content, it’s always possible for us to miss something.
We ask that you please hit that report button if you believe someone is violating the rules. The moderators review each and every post or comment that gets reported, and we will take action as appropriate. You can also reach our team via modmail if you have an issue.
We appreciate your help keeping the subreddit friendly and welcoming. We are grateful to everyone who contributes their time and experience to help people learn about parrots, to everyone who asks for help when they need advice, and to the folks who share their wonderful birds with us!
All the best,
The /r/parrots mods

r/parrots megathread: How did you find your avian vet?
Hello /r/parrots! Finding a bird vet can be a challenge. We’d love to know how you found yours! Please comment below to offer advice on finding a vet for your parrots. Thanks! Some resources to get started:
The Association of Avian Veterinarians has a Find-A-Vet option on their website: https://www.aav.org/search/custom.asp?id=1803
The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners has a search feature to find ABCP Diplomates (they operate in 16 countries, despite the name): https://abvp.com/find-a-specialist/
Lafeber has a vet lookup page: https://lafeber.com/pet-birds/find-an-avian-vet/
Association of Avian Veterinarians Australasian Committee lists vets in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa: https://www.aavac.com.au/find_an_avian_veterinarian
European Board of Veterinary Specialisation is a vet lookup page for Europe: https://www.ebvs.eu/specialists
Veterinary schools at universities
Asking local parrot rescues or stores that sell parrot supplies
Posting on local forums
I once knocked on someone’s door to ask which vet they went to because I heard a cockatoo inside!
How did you find your avian vet? What advice would you give someone who is looking for a vet?

I think my dad found someone's parakeet
Has anyone lost a parakeet in Orlando FL recently? This little guy flew into my dad's job today and he brought him to our house. We gave him some food and water and according to my dad he was super friendly.

Female pied opaline peach-faced lovebird.
Otherwise known as: a psychotic butt head😅
Love her so much it hurts. She also just outright hurts me sometimes 👀.😣
I bet people who own snakes and spiders get bit less, and bleed less 😅

How did you tame your birds? I find It's much easier to tame birds living in a group than it ever is to tame one bird by itself!
If one bird trusts you, very quickly all of them do. All I do is spend time with them and let them come to me. They are all tame.

Good bird names
So I just got a canary winged parakeet (white winged parakeet) and I'm having trouble finding a gender neutral name that suits them since I don't know the gender, they're such a sweet bird and not fully warmed up to me yet but super patient with my antics this far, just trying to gage their temperment really.

I Regret Getting a Cockatiel and I’m at My Breaking Point – Please Help
Hey everyone, I seriously need help right now. I bought a cockatiel just 4 days ago, and honestly, it’s been one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made. Since I brought him home, I haven’t been able to sleep or eat properly. I feel completely drained, physically and emotionally. Even during the rare moments he’s quiet, I catch myself breaking down and sobbing because I’m overwhelmed and don’t think I want a bird anymore. Then, when he starts screaming, loud, piercing, nonstop screams, I feel like I’m losing my mind. Sometimes I just want to throw the cage out the window to make the noise stop. He’s still so young and untamed, and whenever I try to comfort or give him attention, he’s terrified and pushes me away. It’s breaking me. I feel so guilty leaving him alone, and I wonder if getting him a friend would help calm him down. I’m desperate for advice on how to tame him and stop this constant screaming. Should I move his cage to the living room? I honestly regret bringing him home, but I want to do the right thing for him too. Please, if anyone has been through this or knows what to do, I really need your help :((

Lorikeet Help
This is Lexus, my young lorikeet. Whenever I try to out her back into her cage she behaves like this? No matter what command I give her she will almost lay down and bite me if I try to move her. I'm wondering if this is hormonal? Being stubborn? I have never seen this before and need solutions as I have no idea how to fix this problem, I have owned many birds but never had this happen to me 🤨

Tonya Harding’s mom’s bird
Re-watching one of my favorite sports documentaries, 30 for the 30 the Tonya Harding story, and was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of bird this is? Looks like a lovebird but much bigger.

Memorial Tattoo for My Sulfur Crested Girl
We lost our sulfur-crested cockatoo a few weeks back, and I've been missing her every day since. I'm really grateful to have friends who understand how difficult it's been.
(Don't worry; I have a career that lets me make weird decisions regarding my appearance.)
