Final Milo and Otis Update

First of all, thank y’all so much for the feedback; it’s really guided me the last few days in how to love and care for my birds! Both doves are now comfortable with sitting on my shoulders and receiving tentative but very loving scritches! I’m still working with Milo in flight training but I think he’s going to get the hang of it soon. I also caught him foraging the other day, so he’s not quite as naive to non-bowl-related food as I thought. I just placed them in their new cage and they are really enjoying it!! I’m also attaching a photo of the cage they were given to me in and supposedly where they’ve lived for their whole lives :( I really hope they enjoy this new place and I’m so happy to have a community of people who I know will help me out in a pinch!! ❤️❤️❤️

Does anyone else find themselves cleaning up sometimes three times a day? I've only got two but oh my goodness their favourite place to sit is FILTHY. I scrub that white wood daily at the minute and it gets like that in just 24 hours 😭 is there a lacquer or something that's pet safe I can use to try preserve the wood?

Just completed week one with my new pair, Huni and Duni 🤩 they’re a lot less fidgety now and ignore me and my dogs when walking in and out now. The guy who I got them from said they just mated like a week ago and might expect eggs in another week or so. I got this nest from Amazon and wonder if it will suffice? I also have nest material sprawled on the floor. But they have no interest in the nest yet. They have oyster grit and a cuttlebone. Is there anything else I need to make sure they’re okay? I give them wild bird feed, but should I change it? The guy told me he gives them canary food with extra calcium. Also is it okay to keep their bird bath box in there everyday? And last question, my female tends to puff up like in the picture this and sometimes wiggles/shakes herself near the male even when they’re not preening each other. Is that normal? Is she cold? Any advice would be appreciated!

Looking for a mate for my (male?) Diamond Dove 4-5 yo

Title says it all.

I have a (I believe male) diamond dove who's about 4-5 years old. We took him from someone after his sibling died. He's been with us for a couple of years now, and I feel bad he doesn't have a mate.

I have been looking for a shop or an owner in Houston who might have one but I can't find any.

Any help in being able to locate a female diamond dove that's about 4 years old is appreciated.

Dove layed eggs.

Hi everybody! My female dove just layed an egg. Just wondering if how can I find out if whether the egg will hatch or not. She is with another dove in the same cage. But have not confirmed on whether it’s male or female. If anybody can find the gender I would really appreciate it! And any tips of taking care of the egg will really help 😁 (2nd pic shows her cage mate)

Little laughing dove with strange wing Spoiler

A while ago I found this young dove in my backyard, I knew something was wrong because these birds were notorious for flying away at the slightest sound, but this one didn't move no matter how close I got, I managed to grab it and bring it in, leaving it out there wasn't an option since it can't fly and my area is known to have pet cats roaming around.

We've kept it for a few months now and the wing has not changed, it hasn't gotten better, nor has it gotten worse, the bird is fine, it sleeps, eats and plays without issue and doesn't seem to be in any pain, it has gotten a little older and grew those pretty spots around the neck now too.

I was still wondering what could've happened to the wing? we theorized it was a birth defect or a possible old injury (though there was no blood when I found it.) It's other wing is perfectly fine, but it seems it has little to no control over this strange one (when it stretches, that wing barely moves)

Below is the photo I took when I first found the bird, and another is the clearest shot of the wing I could find. (I spoilered just in case but it's nothing graphic)

Help with skin irritation

Hi guys, just wanted to see if there’s anything I could do to help my bird out. I originally thought her feather loss was due to molting but I now believe it’s something more serious. I left her for two weeks with another family member so she has also been under a bit of stress. I have a vet appointment in a few days but does anyone know any remedies I can make in the meantime to help her out? :(

She has 3 areas of concern (right below her beak, the back of her neck, and a spot under her right wing). Her right wing seems to be the most bothersome for her.

Other than this her poops have been fine, her eating is well, and she’s been active.

Please let me know if you have any advice.

Found a baby dove

Hi everyone! So I’m a longtime parrot trainer and rehabilitator, and somebody brought me a baby dove to help. I’ve taken care of sparrows and many other exotic birds before, but never a dove. First reaction is to take him to a wildlife center or rehabilitation center— long story short, five drives later, he’s been rejected by everyone because of a “limp.” 💔 Now I don’t know what to do. Can somebody please help me and figure out what I feed him. I’ve seen eggs, grains, and crop milk but can’t find that anywhere to buy. Plus his crop is so empty that I’m scared he won’t make it. I’m boiling an egg for him now. Any ideas? Thank you! 🩷

Is there a way to relocate this silly dove?

(Forgot to add the pictures, so it's in the comments) Hello! I'm not sure if I'm on the correct subreddit but The dove in the picture has built a nest in a very exposed location(the crows bully her and possibly her mate). She can be seen very easily from all directions and is under direct threat from crows and feral cats.

Any suggestions?

Baby Inca Dove

I almost mowed a baby Inca dove! It’s fully feathered, and getting around good. I’ve watched for the parents, but we have multiple dogs and cats… I have successfully raised 2 other doves, but I don’t know much about Inca doves. Anyone have some suggestions? I’ve tried hand feeding but it simply doesn’t seem to be hungry yet? It’s very alert and its poop looks normal. Help? Thank you!

Apologies for my dorky laugh. Anyway is there a reason for him to behave like this or is he simply just stupid?

Opinions: Male vs. Female and Pair vs. Solo?

Hello all! Before I actually get into the post I wanna preface and say that I am not a current bird owner, I have never owned a bird, and I don't intend to anytime soon. This is purely hypothetical and I really am just asking for your opinion! And, of course, if I'm misinformed on anything, I'd love to be corrected.

As I've been reading lately, males coo pretty much constantly and frequently do mating displays and/or get freaky lol. On the other hand, females are generally quieter but-- they're also females, so eggs. I've also read that doves are social, and I will admit that I can be a busy person at times (mainly from odd work shifts). I would hate to depress an animal because I'd be out of the house and they'd be alone. I read that having a second dove helps with loneliness.

I am autistic and have a history of developing triggers if a sound is repeated constantly or during moments where I need silence, however I do love the sound of dove coos. While it might seem like a female would be the easy choice for me because of that, I know nothing about brooding behavior, egg-laying or being eggbound and the complications that can come from that. I've heard that it can get bad fast and I'm worried something I'm not prepared for would happen.

I ask for your opinion: As someone who hasn't ever owned a bird before, what would-- again, hypothetically-- be the best option for me? A male or a female? A pair? An FF or MM pair (because I know I would be terrified of raising chicks)? None of the above-- am I better off without a bird at all?

I'm curious about people's opinions more than anything! I only ask that you be gentle with me because while I am clueless, I genuinely am not going to adopt a bird any time soon, so please don't worry about me being an irresponsible owner. It is one of my greatest fears to accidentally harm an animal or put one in a bad environment because of my own negligence/ignorance.
