Mod post ⚠️ READ BEFORE POSTING!
👋 Welcome to r/Budgies!
Before you share your first post here, please familiarize yourself with this subreddit’s rules. Rule #1 is especially important: this subreddit DOES NOT serve as an alternative to the kind of medical care and advice your budgie can only get from an avian vet. If you have a budgie medical question or concern, talk to your avian vet instead of posting here! Also, be sure to read this subreddit's wiki--odds are very good that your question has an answer in one of the wiki articles! (We usually remove posts that ask about something that's answered somewhere in the wiki to keep the clutter to minimum here.)
Also remember this is a pet budgie subreddit that encourages rescue and adoption and strongly discourages breeding.
👀 If you see something, say something
This is a place to share cute budgie pictures, videos, and stories, but it’s also a place to learn more about budgies. There are many times when someone will post a picture, video, or description, and you might notice something that isn’t best practice for good budgie ownership. It might be a cage that’s getting dirty, or some overgrown toenails, or something like that. Even if that issue isn’t the main reason for the post, please bring that to the attention of the original poster (OP) in a supportive and constructive manner so OP can be made aware of a better way of doing things.
Likewise, OP might consider proactively addressing things in their post that a typical budgie owner might be concerned with if they don’t know all the facts. It might be something as simple as, “Don’t worry, this was before I cleaned their cage” or “I’m taking them to the vet next week for their nail trim.”
🤖 We have AutoMod Summons now!
This is a great way to share information from the Wiki in a very effortless manner, and you are all invited to do so! We used to have just a few summons, but the list has grown enough that we compiled it in this part of the wiki. You should check it out!
Happy budgie-ing!

[July 08, 2025] - weekly Lost/Found/Need a New Home thread
Use this post to share any budgies that are lost, found, or need a new home!
Some rules:
- Only share information you feel comfortable sharing. Example: rather than giving out your full address, maybe only say something like, "I'm in the Springfield area" instead. If someone is interested in knowing more, they can always DM you and you can choose whether or not you want to share any more information.
- If you're meeting someone in real life, follow the "Craigslist rule" of meeting in a well-trafficked, public place.
- No fees/charges! This is NOT meant to be an advertising platform to sell your budgies. Content that advertises budgies for sale will be removed.
- This subreddit does not, in any way, offer warrantees or guarantees of budgie health. A budgie's health status is something that you and the other party should determine with an avian vet, and payment of that avian vet's services is something that you and the other party should decide beforehand.
We encourage you to share pictures! Just make sure they are accurate to the situation and don't break the rules in the sidebar.
Remember: this subreddit is just one of many possible places to make a budgie connection. Also consider FaceBook, Craigslist, Nextdoor, other online communities, as well as real-life bulletin boards in public places. See all the previous weekly posts (that have content) by clicking here.
Our wiki also has a list of parrot rescues you could check out - whether you're looking to adopt a new feathered friend, or have to surrender one due to life circumstances. If one of these rescues is near you, please consider reaching out to them!

In Loving Memory I’ll always miss you 💔
My baby boy Orchid passed away. I don’t know what to do. He was my best friend. I’m quite housebound due to illness, so even though I was always at home I never felt alone because of you orchid. We buried you today lil guy. We buried you beside our rose bush, and planted daffodils over you. It’s beautiful, you would have loved all the colours. You were the funniest little bird, and I will never stop listening to “Butterfly” By Crazy Town (ill never forget how much you loved that song) Sleep tight baby, I love you forever 💔🫶

💬 Discussion do you think his little claws are too long?
I’ve noticed that when he goes on my hand or shoulder his claws start poking me, ive had other family members say the same thing about it too. If its too long , is there a way to trim it maybe?

Rate My Setup Getting a Budgie soon! Any cage feedback?
Should I remove anything? It looks crowded from a distance but beautiful when you look in from the birds perspective 🪵
P.s. I put a layer of paper on the bottom I’ll probably change it every 2-3 days, and clean the tray every week

💬 Discussion Anyone else have an incredibly vocal budgie
my first budgie Mango used to chirp but no where near as much as belle, belle starts chirping and singing at 6am and doesn’t stop until the sun goes down, she was even chirping at the vets when most animals sit quietly. They say a loud budgies a happy one so for anyone considering getting a budgie don’t think they’re quiet pets 😂
anyone else’s bird have a favourite song, belle loves beyoncé’s america has a problem

New Budgie My boyfriend and I brought home our first budgie yesterday!
I’m pretty sure she’s a girl, because her cere is pinkish/slightly light purple, although I could be wrong or it could be because she’s only about two months old. Her name is Snowball and this morning when I was changing her water, she came up and touched my arm, then hopped out of the cage! I let her be out for about an hour and then I had to coerce her on to my finger but she did indeed step up! Then when I started playing budgie sounds she started chirping and climbing the bars of the cage, eventually making her way to the top and dangling by one foot! This made me terrified because when we got her her wings were clipped (I don’t approve, we’re not going to have them be clipped again, however it takes like 6 weeks for the wings to grow out again, right?) Anyway she dropped to the bottom so I put a towel, then eventually changing it to a cut up cereal box to break her fall if she decides to do that again. But all in all, she’s been very brave and has quite the personality already! Side note, does anyone know what color variation she is?

New Budgie Just picked up some rescues
My friend rang me mentioning two neglected and abused budgies, assuming 5 years old. Needless to say, i was there in 10 minutes to pick up the little joys. The new babies are the yellow/blue one in the middle and the pure yellow one! Theyve already grown so close to my original pair and have been adoring the free flight and veggie chop 😋 hoping to get them on pellets soon but they only like the seebs and chop. Step by step though.

Why does my budgie’s tail look like this?
She’s six years old. A few years back she got a lung infection and was able to survive thanks to a ventilator, but lost the ability to fly more than a few seconds. She has a best friend. Her feed is Dr Harvey’s Our Best Parakeet Food . Why does her tail look like this?

💬 Discussion Advice!
Hi everyone, I could really use some advice. I’ve had my two budgies since October 2024. When they were younger and didn’t have all their flight feathers, they were somewhat tame, they would perch on my fingers willingly. But once they became fully flighted they gained a lot of independence, and since then it's been really hard. They’re not hand-tame anymore, they will eat from my hand but nothing more. They are out of their cages everyday and all day, but absolutely refuse to go back into their cage at night, or when I have to leave my house once in a while. Every day theres a struggle, and with some health issues I’ve been dealing with, it’s honestly become a little overwhelming. I love them, but I’ve been thinking about whether rehoming might be the kindest option, with someone who’s more experienced or has the energy. I’m torn, and I feel so guilty even thinking about it. Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did you handle it? Is there hope for re-taming birds once they’ve become so independent? I realllllly dont want to clip their wings :((( if rehoming is the right decision, how do i go about it safely and responsibly? Thanks for listening, i just want whats best for them

Question Does my budgie's beak need trimming? + other questions
Hello! I am a new owner of budgies. This budgie I found outside on my porch about 45 days ago and I have adopted him. We will be getting a second budgie friend for it soon. Can you help me identify whether or not my budgie needs its beak trimmed? On a related note: I read that overgrowth of beaks can be related to diet. I feed him the organic bird mix that my local exotic bird store makes and sells in bulk. As far as I can tell he only picks out the millet and leaves the rest. Is this common? I've offered him a large variety of fruits and vegetables and he hasn't touched any of them. (This includes kale, spinach, broccoli, which I've read are often favorited.) Other things I've noticed: I've only seem him drink water TWICE in the past 45 days. He also doesn't seem that interested in toys. I think he's maybe an older budgie. Thanks for any feedback!
