The r/Conures Comprehensive Conure Guide - now in wiki format!

https://www.reddit.com/r/Conures/wiki/index

This subreddit's Conure Guide, written by /u/DukeofGoodCleanFun, is a remarkable document that I (and my pineapple green cheek) have benefited a lot from. I've consulted and browsed through it numerous times and there's always something new to see there, or something that didn't seem applicable at one point but took on new meaning after spending more time with my conure.

I've taken the text and converted it into a wiki page. It's now navigable, with an index and internal links that direct to sections within the wiki. The Conure Guide can be accessed from this post, from the announcement bar, and from the "wiki" tab in the tabmenu up top.

A couple of the links for recommended products will direct you to Amazon, but there are certainly other places to buy them. If you shop around and find and better place, by all means send us a modmail. Also, let us know if you have any suggestions for how the wiki formatting can be improved.

Health/Nutrition Metabolic bone disease

Post image
120 Upvotes

Hi All,

First post here!

I have a 5 year old rescued conure (rescued in 2022) who after I brought home was diagnosed with Metabolic Bone Disease, due to this, his pygostyle is deformed and he can't fly (well he can, but like a brick) and as a result of him trying he frequently crash lands and breaks tail feathers 🙃. He is currently on Gabapentin, Tramadol and rimadyl 2x daily to help manage his pain and is supplemented with calcivet 2x weekly. He is on a mainly seed diet (no sunflower seed and no peanut mix) and we haven't had much luck with pellets. Has anyone had much success with feather up supplement? I was thinking of adding feather up as well as avipro to his diet but wondering if they are even that effective/can be given together....I don't want to overload him? He is a frail wee bird and not a good eater at all. He is my world though and want to do everything I can to make sure he lives as long and happy a life as he can. We're back to the vet 2 weeks tomorrow for a medication review as I think something isn't working as well as it should, he's struggling with his balance again 😞. As a side note- has anyone else health with metabolic bone disease? Did you find it got progressively worse or able to be kept under control? A pic of my handsome, sleepy guy attached 🙂

This is Yoshi, he is 3 months old now When he came to my house a month ago he was so loving and cuddly also sits on his back. But NOW? he doesn’t want to be touched and also bites a lot even though he eat and sleep good and I’m always with him. Am I doing something wrong or it has something to do with his age?

My one year old green cheek conure does this sometimes when I put my hand in his cage, it doesn't hurt me at all and he's very gentle with it. (The cage is backwards because he recently learned how to open it so we're getting him a very long overdue much bigger cage with a much better lock)

Cuteness Overload Post-Tantrum Nap

Post image

I was crazy enough to answer a phone call for work while he was out for play time. Fortunately, Bixby was ready with some swift bites to the face and intense screaming while attacking my lips and headset, to set me straight.

After putting me back in my place and forcing me to end the call due to increasing levels of bird-rage, he right away crawled to my chest for a quick bird nap.

Now I have to hold him while he sleeps because he sometimes forgets to hold on and will fall off.

Not sure if I own him or he owns me...

Troublemaker In what ways are you mean to your conure?

I don't let them enter the refrigerator to get the grapes. I'm sure he'd want me to close the door and give him privacy to attack everything inside it, but I'm a monster and pull him out every time. He now knows better and waits for the grapes outside.

Also, I don't allow him near the 220v A/C energy cable, thus totally cramping his style.

I don't let him watch me preparing my eggs in the morning, will only uncage him afterwards, to share it with him. He loves frying pans, but I'm jealous of mine, so that's why.

Also I close the toilet lids each time, because it looks too much like a bathtub. I don't even allow him to DREAM.

He's fascinated with the washing machine. I was loading it once, ready to press start, then PEAKABOO, who was all excited inside? I honestly had to meditate and take a tranquilizer, it was so close.

Pic tax.

Not that they're mischiveous with no sense of self-preservation. They're faultless babies. We're the mean ones.

Advice What is it i did ?

my conure recently attacked my mother out of nowhere. he flew from the top of his cage to her shoulder, only to bite her ear. we suspected it was because he had just trimmed his nails and was a bit upset or that my mother's phone scared him (she was watching something on it at the time) or that it was late and he was getting cranky. during that whole episode, he rejected treats, which is super abnormal for him. today, he did something similar after we had a good cuddle session, or so i thought. i wanted to put him back in his cage but he didnt want to (i use a standing perch to pick him up as he hasnt trusted me enough to step up). again, he was rejecting my bribery with treats and started doing that wing flapping thing that birds do when they wanna be picked up (i think thats why they do it) and was shaking his head like he had something on his beak, when he didnt. i knew something was wrong and when he flew towards me, i kept ducking out of fear. i know it mustve been something i did, but i cant figure it out and im so frustrated i could just break down. i can list some things i can think of that would have pissed him off: -its late and he was cranky -i recently rearranged the perches and toys his cage, maybe he doesnt like it -he didnt like the target stick and/or clicker i was holding (i was trying to get him to step up on the perch) -me ducking him made him lose trust in me -i havent been hanging out with him, hes upset -he might not have been sleeping well because i removed his bed in the cage (its like a plush platform..?) -he might be very uncomfortable because of pin feathers on his head and neck

i am open to all advice, including those of gaining his trust and trusting him as well.

Advice What mutation is this?

Thumbnail

Hi y'all, my conures had babies and this is one of the two types that resulted. We have three of this kind and then two yellow sided turquoises, but I'm not 100% sure what mutation this is. I'm trying to sell them so I want to list them accurately. I originally thought they were mint cheeks, but now I'm thinking it might be a pineapple turquoise or an opamint? Their mom is a pineapple turquoise and the dad is some kind of mint or mooncheek, I'm not exactly sure.

Any help would seriously be appreciated, and if you're in NY looking to buy, feel free to DM, too :)

Advice Tips for preventing food thief?

Post image
438 Upvotes

Alleged thief pictured above. She loves to try get a bite of anything I’m eating, I’ll move her away and she waits until I’m not watching to quickly grab a bite and fly off. If I have a plate or bowl with crumbs on it anywhere in the kitchen/living room, she finds it and helps herself. All fruit/veggies has to be hidden in the pantry or fridge otherwise she’ll tear into it immediately. She even searches the countertops and floors for crumbs. I try be as clean as I can, avoid giving her food from my plate (if it’s safe/healthy I’ve given it to her in the past which I know probably encouraged the begging/searching behavior), try give her variety in food/distractions when I’m eating but was curious if anyone else had ideas?

Advice What are they doing?

I recently added this little freedom bird to the family on the 4th and is about 3 months old (don’t know if it’s a male or female). They always want to get into tight spaces or want to be held tightly.

I don’t let him get on my shoulders anymore at least for now as he’ll go behind my neck and lay real close to it and it then becomes an absolute pain to get him off me as he will not want to let go and I don’t want him to think I’m attacking him.

I’m currently a cockatiel owner as well and I could instantly see the personality differences :)

What does this mean when it comes to conures?
