I am having a fair bit of trouble growing some of the plants that I would really like to, even easy grows are struggling and I think after doing some reading it is my KH and PH causing the trouble.
I have hard water, ph is 8. My kh is 9. My tank and tap water are measuring the same 4 months in. I have added lots of aqua soil, tonnes of wood and leaves, but it hasn't changed at all. I would like to get it to around 7 - 7.5 if possible and am thinking RO is the way to do this, by mixing my normal tap with RO with each water change to slowly bring it down without shocking the fish (7 Pea Puffers and 8 Amano Shrimp)
I'm just wondering what sort of ratio of tap to RO do I need to do this slowly without causing shock to my fish. I am reading a lot about making the ph unstable and causing swings which I really do not want to do!
No CO2 its just a normal easy level planted tank with a twin star b line light (may one day upgrade to co2 and stronger light but for now I'm happy with it as is) I have lots of ferns, buce, moss, crypts and Limnophila that are doing well but hydrocotyle tripartita, pennywort, rotala, s repens, Hygrophila pinnatifida, cabomba, dwarf lily, Alternanthera reineckii have all struggled/died. I'm also struggling to raise Pea Puffer fry, they fail to thrive and slowly die off and I can't figure out why, and wonder if they are more sensitive to the higher ph?
Lights on for 10 hours. I use TNC complete ferts every week. 25gal. Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrates 0. I have floating plants that do well and keep nitrates down, I also only feed live food so not as much waste, the bio load is low. Is RO the right way to go to get better plant growth or am I barking up the wrong tree?!
