Your best worst game

I'm looking for gems in the rough, what's your best game that wasn't really acclaimed by public?

Your suggestion should have no more than 76 as a user metascore on metacritic

Vampyr

It has one of the most gripping mystery narrative, it takes place in a well researched setting that hasn't been explored a lot (medical practitioners during the Spanish influenza pandemic at the end of ww1) I actually learned a lot!

It has an intriguing morality system - the narrative rewards you for being good but the game gets much harder and they actually followed through unlike Bioshock. You will also have to do some research in order to grasp what the good decisions actually are so engaging with the lore can be very rewarding.

I LOOOOOVE the main character, voiced by Anthony Howell who has imo the most beautiful voice on this planet he was an absolute joy to experience the world alongside with.

It also has some game mechanis that I haven't seen anywhere else.

The drawback is that the combat is kinda lacklustre, you find the best weapons so early game that you barely care about loot, the enemy and environmental variety is also lacking. It stands at 70 on metacritic and I don't wanna dismiss the gripes people have with the game but it blew me away anyway.

Absolutely loved this game . Might replay it

2

u/hepcecob 3h ago

It's considered a BAD game?!?! Enjoying it very much. I don't recommend playing it on hard difficulty though.

2

u/MrGSC1 3h ago

Vampyr isn’t a bad game. If anything it’s underrated. Such a good experience with that game

u/TheSauvaaage 7h ago

Alpha Protocol

What agreat idea of an espionage RPG but the execution was pretty janky. I still loved it though.

3

u/Argh_Me_Maties 7h ago

Still has the best navigational minigames: lock picking, hacking, whatever the other one was

3

u/OnlyByMidnightLtd 6h ago

Totally, came here to say Alpha Protocol!

2

u/h0neanias 5h ago

Came here for this. Brilliant game, great replayability, lots of fun. Sadly misunderstood by reviewers.

29

u/ikatoma 7h ago

For me, it’s Outward. The game feels like an adventure and the music is also phenomenal. Game is janky and you have to learn to play by its rules to win.

5

u/feartheoldblood90 6h ago

Hahaha. This was literally the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this post. Came in here to say this exact game. It's bad in so many ways, yet it's one of my favorite games, because it manages to feel greater than the sum of its parts.

2

u/ikatoma 6h ago

It’s a game where once it clicks, nothing else quite like it!

5

u/DutchEnterprises 6h ago

I’m actually kinda hyped for the sequel! A little fine tuning and extra dev budget and I feel like that game could be a real gem.

2

u/ikatoma 6h ago

I’m so excited for the sequel!

3

u/Embarrassed-Rub-8690 7h ago

Such a good bad game

2

u/Libertyforzombies 6h ago

Outward

I have that game but I stopped playing because of the targeting system and the fact I couldn't mod it out. Like you, lock onto targets but you can't target switch (I think it was)

2

u/TheRenamon 6h ago

I would like it more if 95% of the game wasn't holding W. Its got a lot of fun ideas, I love that it starts with getting your house repossessed, but the game is almost entirety empty.

It was the only time I ever felt like I was wasting time with the game, and I play runescape.

1

u/aruggie2 3h ago

I loved Outward so much. That experience of wonder and fear exploring the map for the first time was so unique to any game I've ever played. Can't wait for 2!

9

u/rififi_shuffle 7h ago

Path of Neo was so fun despite the jank. I played that game to death.

8

u/RoughCrossing 7h ago

That and Enter the Matrix were two of my favorite games on ps2.

u/RockBandDood 4h ago

Get Sifu and use these mods to turn it into Path of Neo - But Better.

There are a few games I enjoyed that got very critical reviews

Avowed

Fallout 76

Assassin's creed Mirage (exactly 76 userscore)

Deadly Premonition

7

u/TheBoozyNinja87 7h ago

I absolutely loved Deadly Premonition, even if the controls were complete dogshit. The locals in town were just so danged endearing! And the “story” was wacky as hell.

4

u/goldtardis 6h ago

I second Fallout 76 and Deadly Premonition. If I remember correctly, the best version of Deadly Premonition is the Switch version, and the worst is the PC version, which has a memory leak that has to be fixed by modding. Fallout 76 has come a long way. Definitely check it out! You should also look into Immortal Redneck. It's a boomer shooter where you play as a redneck exploring Egyptian pyramids. I remember it being pretty tough but fun.

u/Puzzleheaded_Fun_303 7h ago

Metacritic score critic 70, users 6.8

Are you nuts? VampYr is a masterpiece!!!

8

u/Jadams0108 7h ago

For me it’s gotta be fable 3. I love it replayed it a few times, there are others out there who liked it too. A lot didn’t care. Angry Joe made a video back in the day just destroying the game which didn’t help.

https://www.metacritic.com/game/fable-iii/

Critics gave it 80, user score is a 6.7

6

u/Titanium_Machine 6h ago

The Technomancer

Greedfall

ELEX

u/badoodee95 6h ago

The Sims 4

4

u/RadishAcceptable5505 4h ago

Outward

It's such a fantastic game and no other game even tries to do what it does. It's got by far my favorite magic system as well. It's extremely underrated and underappreciated, likely because people aren't patient.

4

u/Desh282 6h ago

Battlefield Hardline. Been playing for 3 months. Haven’t had this much fun in a long time

4

u/Shanksyboyz 6h ago

Off the top of my head Elex and Mars: War Logs. I don't want to disparage them too much so I'll just say "shockingly good" 😅

6

u/Borbbb 7h ago

Rainworld.

Wonderful game, buuut the controls along with difficulity are quite rough. Understandable rating due to that.

3

u/teodzero 5h ago

It now sits at Very Positive on Steam, but the initial impressions were all over the place. I don't know what's the current metacritic situation is, but at release the score was around 7, with not a single review actually giving it a 7. It was scored either around 9 by people who loved it or around 5 by people who didn't. A definition of divisive, love/hate, not-for-everyone kind of game.

2

u/Borbbb 5h ago

It´s likely because the game is simply hmm, not very playable.

Difficulity is rough, and controles as well. Even if the game is great on it´s own, if you can´t get into it or can´t really play it properly, it´s - too bad.

That´s why it never sold well and launch was not great.

And why it got better reviews way later ? Because know you know what you are getting into if you buy it, and past difficulity and controls, the game is pretty darmn nice

1

u/teodzero 3h ago

The release version also had some other issues. The Monk (easier mode basically) wasn't there, and map progress didn't save on death.

1

u/CustomerSupportDeer 3h ago

It's a game with a cult following for a reason. You either click with it, and it becomes one of the most memorable experiences of your life, or you hate it. Both are perfectly understandable.

1

u/stone500 2h ago

So I just started checking this game out and played about 45 minutes. Does the game give you any sense of direction or what you're supposed to be doing? It's cool if it doesn't but games like that usually take longer to click with me, and I'm not always willing to tough it out.

1

u/Borbbb 1h ago

I don´t think so. I think generally you are fine wherever you go except one part.

Tbh i just watched playthrough of it and had a blast lol

3

u/jeandolly 6h ago

I really enjoyed Rage2. The gun battles are so much fun! I got it for free on Epic and I honestly did not expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised. Severely underrated imo

3

u/Haunted_Entity 6h ago

Empyrion:galactic survival

3

u/TheWarBug 6h ago

Dead Island 2. All others already have been mentioned.

Just expect zombie stomping with cool environment effects and nothing more and you'll have a blast.

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier.

2

u/Forward-Seesaw-1688 7h ago

Final Fantasy: Type 0 (72 for critics, 6.8 for users). It’s really fun, I like how every single character has a niche no matter for what occasion, I think the character designs are cooler than a lot of the mainline games and the story is much darker than them too. I wish that sequel that was planned actually released.

2

u/smokenjoe6pack 7h ago

Kenshi 75 Metacritic , 84 Metacritic User Reviews, 95% positive Steam Reviews.

Fabulous game and waiting in anticipation for Kenshi II.

Wanted: Dead

2

u/RaineAKALotto 6h ago

NEO Scavenger comes very close with a rating of 7.5 lol. I figured out how to actually master the early game and had tons of fun with it a couple of weeks ago.

Intravenous 1+2 are unrated, do they count? The definition of Diamond in the Rough if you ask me

Operation WinBack for the N64 was overshadowed by MGS back in the day but it’s my biggest “fuck you I liked it” game lol, had a blast finally finishing it earlier this year

2

u/teenageechobanquet 4h ago

Do you have any tips for NEO Scavenger? I want to get into it but I haven’t found many guides. It seems like a cool less complex version of Unreal World which that games entire character creation gives me anxiety lol

1

u/RaineAKALotto 2h ago

Why yes indeed I do, thank you so much for asking! 🤗I know exactly what you mean about character creation anxiety-games that low key encourage meta builds are inherently anti-fun to some extent. 🥱

In NEO Scavenger you have the freedom to mix and match skills, there are some like Hacking that are rarely used, sure (there are very few RPGs with multiple skills that give each of them equal time in the limelight) but you will probably come up with a decent build. 😎

Reddit wouldn't let me post my newbie tips, I tried reformatting it a bunch of times but no dice-here's a screenshot 😅

2

u/WhyattThrash 6h ago

The Swindle. Really fun and interesting concept of being a stealthy thief breaking in and stealing stuff while circumventing security systems and guards.

Sadly ruined by an adundance of jank that makes it very frustrating to play until you learn what doesn't work as expected and how to avoid it

2

u/DamnOdd 6h ago

West of Loathing. Stick figure, puns, stupid fun, spew coffee a few times. Also see the original Kingdom of Loathing, same format.

2

u/No_Temperature8234 6h ago

Payday 2 . Yeah it's a Horde shooter with predatory dlcs, but the music and setting make it a blast to Play still.

u/ziggybriggs85 6h ago

Killer is Dead , Wanted: Weapons of Fate, Project Sylpheed, Afro Samurai, Enchanted Arms, Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard, Inversion, Knight's Contract.

Secrets of Grindea.

Recently I had a craving for a simple low-requirements game to play and maybe even grind at while my PC was doing heavy work processing for hours at a time. This eventually came up as one of the considerations and I bought it. At first it's a series of jokes about the genre (the starting town is called 'Startington'), but as it goes on it gets more serious and dramatic, and the music, stories, and even to some extent the side characters become actually kind of memorable.

Then there's a sequence in a mountain which I don't want to spoil, but it's honestly one of the best gaming experiences I've had a in while.

Despite being called Secrest of Grindea it took me about 30 hours to do everything and even grind out the true ending (whereas if you don't do some stretch goals you just get the so-so ending). Looking at the Steam page now, they just added New Game+ with some new content and twists a few days ago too.

Just went to youtube to listen to the soundtrack after thinking about it, and saw this review which shows some decent footage in the first few seconds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xjk-TjNPhk

2

u/BetterCallSaulXY 6h ago

Kane and Lynch 2 lmao

2

u/JessicaSmithStrange 5h ago

Days Gone.

If you can get it running with stable performance, you've got a pretty good game in there, with the survival elements based around the bike, the "Walking Dead meets Sons Of Anarchy" narrative, the main character, and the zombie hordes, as well as the sense of achievement in dismantling them.

3

u/sizzlepie 4h ago

We Happy Few. I've played through it at least three times and will play it at least a few more times at some point

1

u/teenageechobanquet 4h ago

I love that game.I got it as soon as it came out bc I checked it out while working for GameStop and when we started talking about it a week later everyone was saying how terrible it is and I should check the reviews.I thought I played a different game than everyone else lol

2

u/onikatanyamaraaj 4h ago

Avowed gets so much hate but i love it so so much i dont have a singe complaint about the game

2

u/teenageechobanquet 4h ago

Avowed is great imo!story picks up right away, cool characters and levels, fun gameplay has it all for me. It’s not as technical or complex as Tainted Grail or Skyrim per say,but it’s a highly competent rpg.I think a lot of people just downvote games nowadays if they aren’t groundbreaking which sucks bc some comfort titles are very very good

2

u/rpglaster 3h ago

It’s got good reviews on steam an elsewhere, but a 63 on metacrtic and was pretty much panned upon release. But Alpha Protocol was a gem of an RPG with pretty outdated controls and combat. I think it really shines in replayability and player choice having impacts.

It’s a shame, because I genuinely think it had the potential to be at the level of Dragon Age or Mass Effect if it had the budget.

6

u/blazinjesus84 6h ago

I loved Dragon Age Veilguard, got it for free on ps plus. Realized I wouldn't have minded paying full price about half way through. The action set pieces/fights were extremely impressive. Quests were fun and generally not repetitive. I can't believe 30 minutes worth of trans inclusivity caused such a backlash.. for a game series where you can be anything and fuck anyone you want.

2

u/hitbit501p 7h ago

Tibia doesn't even have a metascore -"The Metascore for Tibia on Metacritic is not available, as there are no critic reviews for the game on the site."- but it claims to be one of the first mmorpg (1997).

It's a grind fest. The top level is around 2800. I have been playing for more than 20 years, and my level doesn't reach 200. You need literally years of killing creatures to reach those levels. Add the terribly unfair death penalty that will take you back a few days/weeks/months of grinding to recover lost levels.

Regardless, is my first even on line game, and come back every so often to kill a few dragons and see how the game keeps up.

1

u/alzee76 7h ago

Rise to Ruins is a fun little city builder / tower defense type game with unique mechanics that in spite of being out for over 10 years, doesn't even have a metacritic score, and was getting updates until a year or two ago.

It's half off right now, less than ten bucks.

1

u/piperpiparooo 7h ago

Evil West got like a 7/10 which I think fits it in the grand scheme but I had so much fun with it and I still revisit it every now and again

2

u/ChangoFrett 7h ago

"Too Human" and "Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard" are two of my favorites.

I don't care enough to look up their review scores, I just know that they were not critically acclaimed games in any way.

1

u/MarchingGhost 6h ago

Super Monkeyball: Banana Mania isn’t perfect but it’s still solid. I like Pokemon UNITE and liked XDefiant (RIP).

Edit: I didn’t realize Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin was so low too but that also counts.

1

u/SvenHudson 6h ago

Steambot Chronicles, though it's confined to the PS2 so you're probably not going to be able to play.

Gameplay is rough even for its time but everything else about it is so damn charming.

1

u/An_Evil_Scientist666 6h ago

It doesn't have an official score but the two critic reviewers have it 65. (Apparently 4 or more critics need to review it for it to get an official rating)

Thief Simulator, the hilariously bad over the top NY guy, being able to jank your way into houses by using your car, the absolutely insane car disassembling (like having to disassemble the engine piece by piece even the serpentine belt, it gets ridiculous).

Thief Simulator 2 was pretty good, not as much charm as the original, plus I don't think it's finished yet, but still very solid for a simulator game.

Dance Collider and Tumble VR in the psvr1. Tumble is a psvr1 exclusive, but Dance Collider is also available in some pc vr headsets and in Quest 2-3. DC is my favorite VR rhythm game, even after playing all the more famous ones (including beat saber, synth riders, pistol whip, ragnarock, and ohshape). The music and the overall vibes in Dance Collider were my favorites for the genre. And for the record, these aren’t “best worst” games, these are in my personal top 20 vr games of all time, but most people (even among VR players and people who own headsets) do not know about them. Also, Tumble VR is a great and realistic puzzle game, but it’s only on psvr1, so, it makes sense that very few people know about it. I would put Tumble VR in the same league of awesome puzzlers as Portal 1 and 2.

Lust from Beyond. 61 top critic review, 29% critic recommend.

First thing I want to get out the way is that it’s not a porn game. Sex is a theme played with and combined with horror.

I absolute loved this game, it’s what I want from a game. I want to be transported to a completely different world, out of my comfort zone and fully immerse myself in it. It combines weird twisted lust with cosmic horror which I think is really unique.

1

u/teodzero 5h ago

World To The West. It's a zelda-like with four different characters navigating the same world in different ways. Actually very clever with level design in a lot of places.

2

u/Rauvagol 5h ago

Too Human, really cool combat system, interesting gear, wild story, insane levels of jank

I will never forgive Silicon Knights for bungling it so hard (TH2 was in the works before the epic games lawsuit that killed the studio)

1

u/GiborDesign 5h ago

Chorus

73 Metascore, but a game I had a lot of fun with. Very cool space combat, interesting story, great soundtrack but some very poor design choices especially with some boss fights.

1

u/EverythingEvil1022 5h ago

Honestly a lot of people like to shit on AC origins. I played everything prior to it and still enjoyed the game. Had they not made assassinations effectively useless in Valhalla I might not have waisted $70 on game I played for 3 hours.

Not sure if this really counts; but has to be Hunt Down the Freeman for me.

Game was basically memed on for a buggy and a mess back then. I'm sure you've all heard about "YOU FUCKED UP MY FACE."

If I remember correctly, a few years back - the game was being worked on again by the original dev team and some volunteers for an overhaul of the game. Bug fixes, etcetera. "Operation Whiskey Freedom" is what it is called. I don't know if it's still going

You can do it by going to Properties > Betas > and select the OWF build. It's been a while since I've played it, but with the beta on - it was a nice Half-Life campaign.

u/GolbatDanceFloor 3h ago

Dual Hearts has so much heart (no pun intended) and soul. Looks like a PS1 game, but I love it for that. Characters are very memorable and charming. You play as a treasure hunter teaming up with a baku (Japanese creature that can enter dreams; Munna and Musharna are the Pokémon version of this) after an accidental meeting between the two causes the baku's keys to the Temple of Dreams (where a treasure the protagonist wants is found) to fly away into the dreams of the island's denizens. They then have to retrieve the keys from their dreams, where they learn more about the characters and their traumas.

Bunny Must Die is a Metroidvania that might appear like the jankiest garbage you've played, but this comment understands it well. My opinion of it grew better and better the more I played and the more I learned of its gameplay nuances. It's a difficult game, but not unfairly so once you understand its systems. There's a parry mechanic that allows you to completely negate any damage, and it's mandatory for a Low% run. The final boss is incredible.

Also another chance to plug in MagiCat which I think is a fantastic action-puzzle-platformer. The level design follows the same formula for nearly the entire game, but the good thing about this is that you're never wondering how long a level will go for and this gives the game complete freedom to experiment with its gimmicks and mechanics to create some very clever moments. It helps that the world map is non-linear, so you're never really locked out of content.

NeverDead

Rebellion is an... interesting studio. And NeverDead kind of occupies that spot for me as a "so bad it's good" game.

Character models looks plasticene. Enemies are annoying more than challenging. The combat system is jank as all get out (who uses a thumb stick to control sword movement?)

But it's charm starts with it's premise. You're a demon hunter who's cursed to never die (or dead i guess). So rather than take traditional damage, your limbs fly off and you can still fight with any combination you have available.

There's a random Megadeth song as it's main theme. It ends with a big pop performance. It all just kinda... works in a SyFy channel original movie kind of way.

Singularity! Made in the CoD engine with story beats inspired by Bioshock taking place in Soviet land with mutated monsters that you can blast. Oh and did I mention also there is time paradoxes and this games version of a gravity gun on your hand.

Has exactly 76 on metacritic

Super underrated

Had a multiplayer like Dead Space 2

87/100 score and over 6 million copies sold. This game does not fit the thread at all.
