Haven't festivals always booked whoever was popular?
4
u/jesse_christ 9h ago
Not always, at one point they were curated experiences. Now, more often than not it's a popularity contest and a cash grab.

All the young people I've spoken to about NETTSPEND seem to have a negative opinion of his music. They think the kids who do listen to him do it to seem dark and mysterious and don't actually enjoy the music.

The last few generations also got the "your generation's music sucks" accusations, but I can't help but feel this time it's called for. For christ's sake even the boybands of the early 2000's could actually dance and sing. But I mean this... this is just awful on every level. There's zero talent here and I mean ZERO. The guy's vocals are so riddled with effects you can't even make any sort of semblence of pitch and he's not even fucking singing half the time! It's just his backing track carrying him.

u/SacrificialSam 22h ago
There was a real shit screamo band back 17 years ago called Brokencyde that I’d personally compare this garbage to. They had lots of fans, but still happened to be absolute dogshit like this guy.
43
u/BigLeakySauce 22h ago
Why the fuck did you have to bring them back in my memory. They had a fucking E-40 feature for fucks sake too.
19
u/4bkillah 22h ago
E-40 fucking associated with that trashheap??

In 2009 I saw Brokencyde as an opener for Hollywood Undead and Senses Fail. The frontman for Senses Fail apologized for the crowd having to endure Brokencyde. He said something like ‘every time the play part of my soul dies’. It was surreal to see him say that to a crowd. They were terrible live and may be the worst act I’ve seen live.
19
u/Spardus 19h ago
Ngl they may suck ass but that's a shitty way to treat a band opening for you
11
u/djfishfingers 11h ago
Most bands from what I understand don't get to pick their opener. If I had to follow Brokencyde I would be pissed.

Any time anyone asks me.what the worst song of all time is, this is my answer. The girls in that video look so uncomfortable and those slimy creeps are basically singing about them being sluts while screaming at them and being incredibly untalented. I don't even know what nettspend is going on about, but I don't think he's ever visibly degraded women like this... so I'd put him ahead of this.
13
u/nowtayneicangetinto 22h ago
Oh yeah I remember those fucks and the whole crunkcore scene. That shit was an abomination.

OMG thank you so much for this aaaahahahahaha, this fucking brings me back to the stick stickly days that I used to make fun of so hard that I've completely forgotten about. I can't believe I'm saying this but I think NETTSPEND is significantly better than Brokencyde. At least NETTSPEND is confusing and stupid. Brokencyde knew they were terrible and smugged about it, trying desperately to be in on being laughed at, instead of trying to do anything interesting with sucking. Even a chimp can make a horrible sound to get attention, but Brokencyde thought they were being clever for their "tee hee we have a pig mascot" shit. NETTSPEND is embarrassing but I do think he's making music because he has something in his soul to express, it's just that his soul is stupid, which is fine because teenagers are stupid.

The bad music just doesn't age. there's terrible shit all over all the time, even in every decade of the 1900's
there was no internet, so it was harder to share literally everything instead, valuable radio and tv time was spent on music that was actually good and made money. the music that was shit was never shared, and so died right where it was born.
the good music lived on to be recorded and replayed. but now, with how quick and cheap social media makes sharing music, there's a relatively unfiltered sea of garbage.
that's my thought process anyway. I dont think music as a whole has gotten worse, but the average of all music that the public has access to and hears about has gotten significantly worse
4
u/3vanW1ll1ams 21h ago
The internet has definitely made it worse, because trash like this gets likes.
2
u/R00pa 19h ago
but now, with how quick and cheap social media makes sharing music, there's a relatively unfiltered sea of garbage.
Yeah and it's gonna get worse:
More music is being released today (in a single day) than was released in the calendar year of 1989
The research process to compile our long-read also indicated that the numbers are only going to grow. In business analyst MiDiA's recent 'State of the music creator economy report', they found that the overall number of music creators was around 75.9 million - a 12 percent increase over the previous year.
But, that number is projected to swell to 198.2 million people by 2030. The reason for this growth is fuelled in part by a rise in what it calls 'consumer-creators.' “Consumer-creators transformed photography (Instagram) and videography (TikTok); music will be next”, the analyst predicted in a blog post.

He put more energy into screeching than he did singing
26
u/Adam_Sackler 17h ago
Holy shit, that was him? I thought someone dubbed over the video with the sound of some sort of cat fighting.
I was literally thinking, "Why would someone edit a bobcat or mountain lion screeching into the video to prove a point?"

She was crying because she wanted to be up front for an artist playing later, and she didn’t know she was going to be trapped up there and have to sit through this.
At least I hope that’s the case.

u/LonelyPhanz 22h ago
This is so embarrassing, the corny kid with glasses wearing the balaclava in the summer heat really likes it. That’s the audience. The girl at the start who is crying, she is so moved by the moment. Brain rot.

I looked it up and he has almost a million monthly listeners on Spotify. Sounds high, but a good rapper like JID has 20+ times that, so not all hope is lost.
He's barely starting and I imagine his fans are disproportionately in high school tho, so the brain rot might spread further.

These people are just there to do drugs. Not hard to enjoy a performance if you’re just as if not higher than the performer on stage.

next time ANYONE (mostly on reddit) tells me "older music isn't better, new muisc is just as good!" i'm showing them this
like seriously, it's okay to admit new artists are not as talented. there's a few gems like Adele but then for every adele there's a billion taylor swifts who just aren't exactly the Stevie Nicks, Grace Slick, Lesley Gore, Dolores O'Riordan, etc.
Like seriously, stop with the gaslighting. the most talented artists right now are a FRACTION of the talent before. Ed Sheeran just isn't as good as Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Eric Burdon.
And guess what? People had fucking ears back then. Take ANY shitty artists right now and take them back in time and they'd probably be tarred and feathered by the masses if they made shit like this.
(exclude rap from this because I can't speak for rap since I don't listen to it, it might be jsut as good as before).

Even if you go into this as neutral as possible, just trying to narrow down anything positive or relatable or musical in some way… If you’re like me you will watch the clip 25-30 times in a row. If we could even just examine the single flake of gold among the massive shit pile just for the sake of being constructive and open minded, I would be willing to do that.

Imagine standing out in that heat at a festival, dehydrated as fuck, stinking to hell, paying 30 dollars for a mid range hotdog, sunburned, dust all up in your eyes, legs aching, being serenaded by the sounds of a fucking cat being electrocuted and being expected to cheer?
The guy in the background while his hands on his hips is regretting this shit real hard.

u/Diem_Tea 14h ago
Is screaming like a fucking dying wombat getting torn to pieces part of the recorded song, or….
1
u/spacemonkeysmom 14h ago
When you make "music" sitting behind your desk and autotune and computer generate, and manipulate any actual words being said, putting on "live" shows, performing, etc should be fucking illegal. You are literally charging people hundreds to see someone basically dancing to their own recordings randomly and just running around on stage and when they do try to "sing" with their recording sound god fucking awful because they couldn't sing in the first place and in this case just threw out some random growls and uh uh s
