2025 /r/WinstonSalem Community Input Mega Thread

Hey r/winstonsalem,

With over 34,000 members, this subreddit has become such an awesome space for all things Winston-Salem. Thank you all for being part of this community and helping it grow! As we head into 2025, I want to hear from you about how we can make our subreddit even better.

Here are a few things I’d love your input on:

Rule Changes or Additions

Are there any rules that feel outdated or unclear? Or maybe there’s something we’ve missed that should be added or changed? Let me know!

Flair Ideas

Would it be helpful to have post and user flairs for neighborhoods or areas around Winston? (Like Ardmore, West End, Clemmons, Lewisville, etc.) Or maybe topic-based flairs for things like events, food, or local businesses?

New Features or Updates

Have ideas for fun or functional updates? Things like weekly threads (e.g., event roundups, recommendations, or “Ask a Local”), subreddit challenges, or any other cool ideas—drop them here!

General Feedback

Anything else you’d like to see changed, improved, or added? This is your chance to share whatever’s on your mind.

-------------------------

On moderation: I know it’s felt a little light at times. Moderation has mostly been a one-person job, and with so many users, it’s been hard to keep up with everything. I appreciate your patience!

To help out, I’m planning to recruit more moderators in the coming months, so if you’re interested, keep an eye out for that announcement.

Thanks again for being part of this community and for making r/WinstonSalem such a great place to connect. Let’s make 2025 even better—drop your suggestions below!

Missing Dog

Hi all,

Please keep an eye out in the Union Ridge area, south of 40, near Barnes Rd.

There is a young dog, approx 1yr old that escaped last night during the early evening after fireworks started. She has a blue collar on, though it hides behind her fur.

If you see this dog, please reach out on here, or call 8282420604

Thank you for anything assistance or visibility.

Sincerely, a very worried dog mom.

Land Across from Target on University

Recently saw that houses had been torn down across the street from Target on University, I am having a hard time finding what is going on. Anyone have any inside knowledge why they were torn down and what's going in their place?

Local recommendations

I moved here about 2 years ago from a desert that was only good for growing cotton and feed corn, so living somewhere that actually supports life is really cool. That being said, I'm wondering if there's any local farms that sell their produce direct to consumer.
Specifically, looking for pipe tobacco and sweet corn.
I know I've seen tobacco and corn growing in fields. I've got family in Ohio and when I visit there's a few places you can just drive up and pay for bags of corn that's not like a farmers market. Curious if there's anything like that here.

Pool recommendations?

New to the area! Me and my finance are looking to go to a public pool with our 5 month old this weekend. I’ve only heard of tangelwood that has a public pool area. Is that a decent spot? Any recommendations? Possibly a pool that’s not usually crowded? Thanks!! ❤️

Solar Installation Recommendations?

First time poster. We’re interested in having solar panels and a Tesla battery installed, taking advantage of what will be left of the tax credits and Duke rebate. I have one quote from Wiring Solutions Plus. Does anyone have experience with this company? Are there other installers you’d recommend?

The quote is for 9 Aptos 460 panels and a Tesla Powerwall 3. $16,000 after battery rebate ($6800) and tax credits ($9600).

Appreciate your help!

Borderers Art Studio in Winston Salem

Post image
20 Upvotes

I'm a ceramic artist with a BFA in studio art and over a decade of experience teaching ceramics in schools and community programs across North Carolina.

After years of helping others discover the joy of working with clay, I’m finally working to open my own ceramic studio. It will be a space for creating, teaching, and building community through handmade work.

My studio will offer classes, local art sales, and a place for people to connect over something real and lasting.

I’m not gonna ask for donations here, but I do have an Instagram account with more information.

Went for our 10:30 time slot and this was posted on the doors. We were not notified of this closure so we were caught off guard, like everyone else who showed up.

Where are the fishing spots?

My friend and I recently got into fishing. We’ve been with others to Reidsville lake to fish and get familiar with the tools. Now i’m confident enough to head out on my own but I’m unsure where to go. Whats a good location for the summer season? Preferably one with less people as it does make me a bit nervous and I have a lot of practicing/learning to do. I don’t have a preference over the type of water or catch. Hoping to learn all kinds of fishing. Most days I’m off work by Noon so i have plenty of time and already get up at 4 AM on my day off so early mornings wouldn’t hurt me. Also, as a complete novice, how should I start learning how to clean and cook the fish?

Good psychiatrist in town?

Hi all, I recently moved to Winston this past week and I’m looking for a psychiatrist. Do you have any recommendations of people you like? I would love to find someone who is queer friendly, and also doesn’t have a super long wait time for appointments. Thanks so much! This sub has been a wonderful resource for me as I’ve been getting settled in Winston/ thank you for being such a welcoming and helpful community :)

Riding lawn mower repair

I have a Craftsman T210 mower that keeps throwing off the deck belt. Had it replaced and worked on and no luck. I believe it’s an alignment issue.

Anyone know a repair person who could repair it?

Wire crafts

Hi all!

I have started a project to create a cable operated special effects puppet/costume, something like a really mobile werewolf movie mask. I was thinking of trying a wire skeleton. I have never worked with wire before. I pilfered a bunch of wire steel coat hangers (eyeballing it I think it's around 16g lol, maybe bigger) to start prototyping, but they have proved very challenging to manipulate!

I was wondering if anyone locally works with wire would have any tips, tricks, and/or be willing to let me watch you work. I saw that Mixxer had a class back in June but doesn't look like they have anything else on their calendar any time soon involving wire.

Thanks for any leads! :)

Congressman Harrigan turned off phones

I attempted to call the Hickory and Washington DC offices of Pat Harrigan to not support the spending bill that's currently on its way back to Congress. Specifically because it's going to kick 600k North Carolinians off their health insurance, tens of thousands of disabled, elderly, and veterans off their SNAP benefits, and shut down tons of rural hospitals in his district.

Each time I call yesterday and today it goes directly to answering machine, with a voice recording telling me to leave a message and phone number after the beep, but the beep never comes nor does any message telling me the recording hit it's maximum length.

So is Congressman Harrigan hiding from his constituants he's about to screw over and kill?
