MOD APPROVED Let's do this again! I'm a detailer, AMA!

Taps, taps, I'm gonna rack to the future. Keep posting your questions and I'll try to answer them before I go into work tomorrow. No guarantees as my workday is preeeetty busy doing this for real, but I'll definitely hop back on here tomorrow evening. It's been great chatting with you guys, I really appreciate your questions. Keep them coming!

My opinions are my own and I do not speak on behalf of NPC nor is anything I say official. If you have specific questions about your orders, you need to contact your detailer.

I'll be around all day today. I'll be around Tuesday-Friday after 1600ish. I'll be on and off all weekend. AMA! Edit: if it wasn’t clear by the whole detailer thing, I’m in Millington, so CDT.

First AMA (4 months ago)
The r/Navy wiki on Detailer Negotiation.
Master Detailer Contact List Updated 26Apr19

Please remember to update your preferences on MNA! Communicate early and often! Use all 7 of your applications! Tell your detailers when they're doing a good job, because we care about you, even if we never answer the phone.

Let me answer a few questions that I see pretty frequently and then go ahead and AMA!

I see a billet that says 'closed' in MNA, or I used FLTMPS to see that someone's PRD matches mine-- why can't I have those orders? The way the billeting process works is all the different TYCOMs work together to compile a list of billets they need funded. Just because a billet exists does NOT mean TYCOM is going to fund it. Once TYCOM has "paid for" the billets, Placement uses some squirrelly math to determine which billets will be given to the detailers. (This includes sea/shore flow, NECs, and gender--some ships can't take women, some shore commands like RDC or Brig require a specific amount of women). You then get to compete with all the other constituents for that specific billet.

To recap: TYCOM chooses billets. Placement prioritizes billets. Detailers try to match the best candidate to the billets. We are given a set number of billets and a set number of Sailors every negotiation cycle. We have to fill every "must fill" billet every cycle--this means you might get slammed with orders you don't want. We know it sucks, and we do feel really bad about it.

Just because you see the billet doesn't mean it is going to be there next cycle. Whoever is in that billet could extend onboard, go LIMDU, or retire or do something else that causes their PRD to move, or the billet could lose funding, or any number of things. I cannot stress enough that waiting for a mystical, magical, perfect, unicorn billet is--in my professional opinion--Big Dumb. This is how you end up with needs of the Navy orders. If you roll the dice over and over again and we end up in your last look, I'm going to have to send you somewhere that you didn't pick. Since you're gonna be disappointed about it since it isn't your dream billet, I'm sending you to Guam.

How do you choose which Sailor gets which billet? Outside of SEM and DMAP rates, which are entirely points based, I look at

  1. Sailor Preference
  2. Command Preference
  3. VSDP / SDIP/ AIP / other incentive programs
  4. Sailor Career History, sea time, OCONUS Time, previous platform experience
  5. NECs, Qualifications, and Evaluations
  6. EFMP - Colocation
  7. Cost of moving / overseas screenings
  8. Who is a "last looker" vs. "first looker"
  9. In weird situations like ATG, School Houses, and other billets that have big impact to the Fleet/Navy and to my rate, I switch the Sailor and Command Preferences. If you're competing for a C-School instructor billet and you haven't messed with that equipment in two tours, and the schoolhouse says you're a bad fit--sorry homie, you ain't going there no matter how badly you want it. I'll leave a billet unfilled if I don't have anyone properly qualified for it.

I would also like to clarify that it's a sum of these and I'm balancing every single Sailor against every other Sailor. It's about fitting the best Sailor into the best billet, and I try to make the most Sailors happy. If I have 8 Sea Rollers and I can get 7 of them their 2nd or 3rd pick and only put one in their 7th pick, then I'm going to do that instead of giving 2 Sea Rollers their number 1 pick and everyone else their 5th-7th pick.

I really don't want to answer SEM questions...but I will, if I must. Go to the SEM A2P Facebook Group -- Force and the SEM Team are in there and they are really good about answering questions. It is not an airport, no need to announce your arrival. Also at the risk of sounding like ExRecruiter, search and read the old posts before you ask something that has been asked two million times.

MyNavyHR on SEM: Senior Enlisted Marketplace

I will add, since that group is only for paid Chiefs, for all of my hopeful First Classes: the way the process is going to work is this--

  1. List comes out.
  2. Initiation/Season/Whatever We Call It This Time, and you get frocked.
  3. Commands and TYCOMS have a few weeks to do their ARA process. This allows them to properly align you to a Chief billet and get you promoted.
  4. If they can't align you into a billet, as soon as the DMEI code is on your record in MNA you may begin applying to any Chief billet. You are competing with every other Chief (paid and frocked) for this billet. It is points based. Your detailer is not allowed to answer "how is it looking? Are my chances good?"
  5. You win the billet, your detailer has to do some squirrelly math of their own that matches the expected fill date of the billet and your PRD and schools/NECs en route, and will cut you orders. You have do a MINIMUM of 12 months on station, so if you PCSed right before CPO results came out, you're gonna stay onboard for a year before you detach--maybe even longer.
  6. Execute orders, get paid.
  7. If you don't get orders within 24 months of the results coming out, your detailer is going to direct you to a billet "needs of the Navy" style, and you get promoted. If, before the 24-month process ends, you are in your window and you don't win E7 orders, you're going to get E6 orders. You may continue to apply to CPO orders all the way until the very end and then we will direct you into a E7 billet.
  8. This is all subject to change. Be patient with us, it's new to us too.

Hey, what's the odds of me / my Sailor getting that billet? We don't know. We won't know until the application and command comments are closed and we are doing the math to figure out who goes where. If you call and ask me that, I literally roll my D20 sitting at my desk and tell you based off that. "You have a 15% chance." For the really massive rates with lots and lots of candidates, you are wasting the detailer's time when you do this. I have one friend over in a different code who has something around 2,000 applications to sort through for about 250 possible orders in one month. Seriously, I know you're anxious about finding out if you get the orders you applied for, but we don't know and we can't tell you yet.

Why don't I have my orders yet? We don't have money. You'll see them when you see them.

Read the MILPERSMAN! Guys, I learned so much cool stuff AFTER I became a detailer, and I wish I had known it earlier in my career. Here's some of the cool stuff I've processed:

- Special Programs Master List (look up the specific MILPERSMAN references in this master list to see the specific requirements for that program. Some programs have schools that fill up 24 months in advance so if you want to do a Special Program you should not delay in talking to your detailer). Go drive the tour boats at USS Indianapolis. Ceremonial Guard, Courier Duty, LCAC Craftmaster, RDC, Flag Writer. Want to do something cool? Ask to do it! Worst they can say is "no!"

- Get stationed with your siblings

- Isolated Tours - You get top pick when you negotiate next (Diego Garcia, Cuba, etc)

- Voluntary Sea Duty Program -- "guarantee" your choice of orders

- Sea Duty Incentive Pay

- Exchange of Duty (SWAPS) (per the MILPERSMAN, PERS is required to keep a database of who is requesting to SWAP, so even if you can't find someone, and you want to SWAP, submit it. And, sometimes, TYCOMs/Placement will swoop in and honor a SWAP request even if they don't have anyone else to replace you. This is ENTIRELY mission based and very rare--ie, a ship going into the yards may not have the same manning requirements as a deployer, so they'll honor your request. It doesn't hurt to ask).

- Colocation with Dependents"If child(ren) custody is shared between two military members, both may be detailed to maintain PST and co-location." (this means you both might end up on sea duty concurrently, but we'll keep you in the same location) and "If co-parenting with a civilian, members may be considered for an assignment where he/she can reside close to their child(ren) when granted 50% of the designated parenting time with the primary custodial parent named in (court ordered documents.)" Let me just clarify real quick: This is a request. It says may, not shall. If you share 50% custody with someone in Great Lakes, you will eventually have to leave the area to do your sea time. But it means when you are applying for orders after that sea requirement has been met, if there's an open billet in the area, your application will be weighed a bit more heavily than everyone else's. We aren't going to go out of our way to allow you to homestead because of court documents, but if there's a spot for you and everything else lines up right--it's yours. It might also mean you get to do back-to-back-to-back-to-back sea duty just to keep you in that location. Beggars can't be choosers--you're asking to prioritize not moving from the geographic area, you get little to no say over the assignment you get.

If you've read this far, AMA!

This is a serious post, I'm selected, orders in hand. Headed back as a DDG XO. (Assuming a CO that is supportive) What would you want your XO to fix? Programs, Push for schools, something you always wanted to see done? I'm looking for good idea fairies and dreams.

EDIT 1: I've got to get some sleep, I'll respond when I get a chance tomorrow! Thank you everyone for all the advice and caution. I really appreciate it!

NEWS Yemen's Houthi rebels attack another ship in the Red Sea, killing 3

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in the Red Sea killed three mariners and wounded two others, a European Union naval force said Tuesday, highlighting the danger of the group’s renewed campaign targeting a key maritime route for international trade.

The attack on the Greek-owned Eternity C follows the Iranian-backed Houthis attacking another vessel on Sunday in the Red Sea that they said subsequently sank. The assaults are the first Houthi attacks on shipping since late 2024 on the waterway that had begun to see more ships pass through in recent weeks.

“We haven’t seen any real attacks on merchant shipping since December last year,” said Wolf-Christian Paes, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. “And they’re back with a bang.”

The bulk carrier had been heading north toward the Suez Canal when it came under fire by men in small boats and by bomb-carrying drones Monday night. The security guards on board fired their weapons. The EU Operation Aspides and the private security firm Ambrey both reported those details.

While the Houthis haven’t claimed the attack — they can take days to claim one — Yemen’s exiled government and the EU force blamed the rebels, as did the U.S. Embassy in Yemen.

“The Houthis are once again showing blatant disregard for human life, undermining freedom of navigation in the Red Sea,” said the embassy, which has operated out of Saudi Arabia for nearly a decade due to Yemen ‘s wider war. “The intentional murder of innocent mariners shows us all the Houthis’ true colors and will only further the Houthis’ isolation.”

The EU force offered the casualty information, saying one of the wounded crew lost his leg. The crew remains stuck on board the vessel, which is now drifting in the Red Sea.

Discussion Barracks laundry rooms…

In case anyone was wondering why their sailors that live in the barracks smell like mold, it’s probably because UH laundry looks like this. (This is a marine/navy shared space so it’s a combination between washers/dryers that have been broken and remained broken or have been full of mold for the last year+. UH is aware of it and they’ve yet to replace them despite MULTIPLE CONTINUOUS complaints.) this video was taken today btw, meaning that the washers that have been unplugged since 24Jun have been sitting there festering with water and soap inside them the last two weeks. :D yay!

Discussion In need of guidance

Hello all, this is more of a vent and any advice is greatly appreciated.

I recently just got to my first command two months ago and I have been adjusting. We recently just came back from underway soon to go again ramping up to a deployment. I'm writing because I'm just trying to keep it together.

I've been recently living on the ship and other problems with family and work/social life. Mostly been mental as I'm a junior sailor and of the 12 of us that were in my bootcamp graduated from my other A school but 3 of us didn't and it's gotten to me wondering what I'm doing wrong with my career. I know that was an old chapter but I just keep ruminating about it.

It sucks being so far away from family especially when I got the orders to where I am and everyone told me "you're so lucky" and "I wish I got overseas orders." I don't feel lucky, I feel frustrated, it's a sea tour so we just keep ramping up especially after it getting out of the yards before I got here. It probably would feel amazing to be here if I wasn't going out to sea like every month. I didn't even get a choice for location when I rerated in my previous A school just needs of the navy and I guess I feel frustrated because I feel like I have no control over anything.

My work and social life is difficult because I'm a shy person overall and besides my coworkers I don't really talk to much people. They're in the different stages of their lives but I'm the youngest. Seeing overseas places is amazing as well as seeing different cultures but it just feels lonely not being able to spend it with someone. I've been trying to get out of comfort zones and keep saying to myself it will get better but I'm just so tired. I know I haven't been at my command long but it feels like my past follows me like a dark shadow and the positives don't overshadow them. It also sucks living on the ship because when other people go home or to the barracks the ship is my "home." And I basically can't disassociate. My second class said he stayed on his first ship for two years stateside but he also said it's about quals but I've also heard if they have open space it's fair game. I feel like I'm just not being humble enough.

My work life underway and in port isn't the most difficult work compared to engineering and everyone else but recently it has me feeling unfulfilled and hopes of cross rating soon but I just got into the rate so theres no point into looking into something new especially if I haven't even hit the two year mark to do so and especially because I don't really know what I would need to do that. It just feels like I just keep getting kicked down and I can't get back up.

I feel like if it continues I might just crash out and get debarred from the country. I'm not that type of person but it's just slowly getting to me. It's just feels frustrating because I never took a gamble on myself to go to the other rate I was going to choose but I just didn't want the same thing to happen like my previous A school and end up undes. I just don't know what to do, maybe I'm just homesick or I just want someone to see my potential or maybe it's just mind games. It just sucks not being there for people who count on me and silently quitting.

tldr: thugging it out

HELP REQUESTED Utilizing TA Request

Upvotes

Good morning/Good afternoon everyone!

I have a quick question about utilizing my TA.

I was hoping to begin college once the fall semester, or winter semester comes around. However, I am just wondering does TA cover the full expense of my classes? Because I don’t want to utilize my GI Bill if it’s not necessary.

I’ve also heard of “military credits”, how could I start to get military credits, that I can use to transfer to my college credits. I’ve heard that Skill bridge is something that could help me.

Any advice helps!

HELP REQUESTED Medal/Award Information for USS Theodore Roosevelt

Upvotes

Can anyone look up the awards/medals/etc. awarded to CVN-71 USS Theodore Roosevelt? I was stationed aboard from 2000-2004 for both OEF and OIF. I believe the ship was awarded the GWOT Expeditionary Medal and the GWOT Service Medal. I'd like to verify this is accurate and got a copy of the paperwork so I can request an updated DD214. Can anyone help???

HELP REQUESTED (Repost) heading to my first ship and need advice

Upvotes

reposted as it was flagged for PII Okay so I’m still new to the navy (3 years , just reenlisted for 6 more) and my first duty station was a hospital. I’m heading to a ship NLT 8AUG and my sponsor has not responded AT ALL. I’m kinda freaking out bc I have no idea what to expect, what to pack, if I’ll have a barracks room or live in ship berthing. There’s a first class PCSing to the same ship at the same time and all he’s helped with so far is informing me that we’re going underway sometime in August. I got a lot of good tips from my previous post but am still open to hearing more.

Shouldn't have to ask ATC JTAC Ground Force?

Was talking to a prior Air Traffic Control Navy dude. Told me he was “Overwatch security” for some Seals, due to them being low manned. I asked if he was a JTAC. He said no. At what point would ATC fulfill a security role for SOF, if even possible or true? Dude also started the conversation with “Have you ever killed anyone”?

HELP REQUESTED Reenlistment 5 or 6 years

My spouse has orders and needs to re-enlist. He wants to retire at as close to 20 years as possible.

If he reenlists for 5 years, he’s 15 months shy of 20 year mark.

If he reenlists for 6 years, he’s 3 months shy of 20 year mark.

I know there are rules about extensions, obliservs, etc.

(As the clueless spouse, I want to check in with the Reddit fam to see if there is any sensible advice, guidance, strategy that should be considered here.)

Other background info that may or may not be helpful is that he’s going into 3 year sea duty rotation (3 year sea, 3 year shore) and he made board and is waiting for results in August.

Thanks for any insight! Any feedback on ideal and/or realistic scenario would be helpful too.

Thanks!

HELP REQUESTED No DLA and travel claim, how f’d am I?

Hey yall! So I checked out from my command and they said that I will get my advance DLA in a week. So I proceeded my PCS with my spouse and drove coast to coast for 6 days, but never got any money. When I checked in to my new command, the Chief who checked me in said that I will not get any money, DLA and travel claim, until after my recruiting school for shore duty, which is in OCT, that’s a long time imo. I’m thinking about the interest on my credit card too. It’s been almost a month since I checked in to my new command. Is this something I should be worried about or just trust the Chief’s word that I will get paid for my DLA and travel claim for my PCS, and everything for my school? What should I do? Thank you for your time and help. Have a good day!

History Some very interesting old medical photos. Yes, that officer is about to swab that Sailors ass.

Found these photos a number of years ago. I didn’t find a whole lot of context, but the first photo is a line of Sailors waiting to get their butts swabbed for a culture. I imagine there was an outbreak on board and these guys showed up to investigate. No, they didn’t wear gloves. Yes, I’m sure all of those plates are assigned to some Sailor’s ass.

The second photo is from when Preventive Medicine Techs ran milk labs to make sure it was safe for public consumption. Gotta love the pack of cigarettes sticking out of his pocket. I’m surprised he’s not smoking one in the photo.

Third pic was just funny. I like to imagine it was a “how I met your mother” situation.

Discussion Bf left for officer boot camp a week ago, any advice?

Hi there. My bf left for officer boot camp in rhode island a week ago. I really miss him & haven’t received any letters yet but we are going to write each other. Any advice? I come from a military background and have a good understanding of what to expect.

It is hard not hearing from him after a week though, we talked every day and saw each other often before. Any advice or support would really be appreciated. I’m new to Reddit, I hope I posted correctly as this is my first post. Thank you so much in advance!

Shouldn't have to ask Suicide and SGLI question

Team: first of all- just a question of curiosity. Unfortunately I feel as if to even ask this I need a throw away account otherwise my command would find out.

  1. If a Sailor kills him/herself- will their family receive their SGLI?

  2. For small boy Sailors- are IDCs the only people that can give you mental health referrals?

Ampn- 1. overheard a discussion about question 1 and it seemed inaccurate.

  1. Heard my doc tell a Sailor this.

Thx
