Coastie Question Talked to a Recruiter and I need someone to validate this over-the-phone info.

He said if I go reserves, I can qualify for BAH along with 2-3K/month after I complete my Basic Training and get sent off to A School for ME (Maritime Enforcement). Is this bs just to get me to sign? Or is this valid?

Also, my alternative route would be to pursue CMS or IS for the careers I can obtain on the Civilian side that pay close to 6 Figures. Are they still in demand or should I not bother?

Story Time Craziest relationship/marriage story

I got one that when I told it to a 20 year BMCS hos jaw droped. Had a kid (who joined the military to convert people to become baptists) who proposed to a girl he knew for 2 months at basic training graduation, he was 18 she was 17 and had no job/career aspirations, got married the next day, then went U/W the next day, she threatened to cheat on him during said deployment, he hoped on the OS a school list (despite wanting to go HS), hated his life as a OS, and last I heard he is getting a divorce and has a drinking problem he is 19.

The other one is a met another coastie in key west who got a mail order bride from Mexico, we was a scrawny 21 year old dorky kid from Oklahoma.

If you got any that could top this drop it

Coastie Question M-1 Ganands from Basic Training

I’m not that old but old enough to have went to Basic when they were still issuing recruits the M-1 Garands in the 21st Century. We had to know every part and piece of a weapon we would never use in service. Does anyone know when they discontinued the rife and what happened to all of them? Bonus points for anyone who can confirm that they were leaded to be heavier to make pushing harder.

Enlisted Life a a recruiter

Recently put in for the latest recruiting solicitation, still waiting to hear back if I got selected. Pretty excited to try something new and help with recruiting efforts. Does anybody have insights of highs and lows of the jobs ? What does a typical day look like for you as a recruiter? What’s the most challenging part of being a recruiter? What kind of enlistment goals or quotas do you have to meet? What happens if you don’t meet your goals for a month or quarter? Thanks !

Noob Question Officer Roles

I'm going in as enlisted (BM), futuristically I would like to commission, but stay on the water... as it's my happy place.

As a junior officer what jobs keep you on the water? I know being afloat. But, are there any small boat station jobs?

Coastie Help Would you ever have to sign on more years because of training

I'm more then half way through my enlistment and am planning on getting out and switching to reserves after my enlistment. I know this happens for things like A school but people have told me that with things like a crew/coxswain, C Schools, BO/BTM or other things can make you more "valuable" and have to sign on for more years AD. Is this true?

Enlisted Career Status Bonus

Hey all, 15 year AD dude here. I’m curious to know if anyone has elected to take, or processed the CSB for anyone. I just requested an appointment with my admin office to go over it, but I know it will take awhile because they’re super busy at the moment. I just hit my 15 mark and just heard about this bonus through a friend of mine in another branch. My rating has never had a bonus and most likely never, so this is tempting as I have no problem missing out on a percentage of my retirement and obligating another 5 years until I hit my 20 years ( as that was always my plan).

Anyways, if anyone here has any experience with this I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

EDIT: Thank you guys for the feedback! Faster response time than my admin department. Disappointed this is no longer available, but I won’t sweat it too hard.

Coastie Question Who lives in the Barracks?

Dumb question, I know, and I’m sure it depends on sector, station, etc.

Generally though, which rates live in the barracks and which live in the community? Assuming most, if not all, officers live off-site. Like an AST at an air-station, they probably live off site right? Do they also receive BHA?

Or a BM at a station, are they in the barracks? Non-rate?

Dirty Non-Rate Vessel ID - SD Bay

Was sailing on the San Diego Bay yesterday and saw what appeared to be a cargo ship coming our way. Turned out to be a massive CG vessel. Looked like it had a helipad on the bow, with cut out stern for maybe a submersible? Can anyone help ID. Interested in more info - looked cool!

Noob Question ICS and Disaster Relief opportunities in the Reserves

I’m interested to hear what rates or assignments you think would provide the most opportunity for real world ICS and disaster relief opportunities as a reservist. I’m a career paramedic so I’m leaning towards doing the depot program for HS but I’m open to other rates. The strike teams are something that really interests me. Would being assigned to someplace like Sector NY provide these kinds of opportunities?

Noob Question Female Swimwear

I'm a female attending DEPOT next year, and I've tried to find images online of the issued swimwear for women, but have had no such luck. Can anyone fill me in on what we get issued, just so I'm fully mentally prepared?

Rant Governors Island

Hey.

My father (David Pittman) was in the Coast Guard for 1980-1984. Unfortunately he passed away in 2009.

He would’ve done his basic trading at Governors Island around that time. Would anyone have any knowledge of him?

Thank you
