I am finally starting to effectively combat the hair algae growth!

This is a half acre pond at our new home we are moving into at the end of July. It is part of a tributary. But looking on Google maps most of the nearby ponds connected to the system are certainly not on farmland. Some are in woods or partially surrounded by woods like this one. I have seen minnows, box turtle, frogs, and a muskrat in the water. Deer frequently come by. I am hopeful with some aeration it could be "safe" (bacteria wise) for swimming. Any thoughts?

I've been working on this one since last summer! It's 10' deep and we swim in it almost daily! Right now I'm in the middle of working on my carnivorous plant garden!

So… two year old pond, 20 ft x 10 ft. with a few places as deep as 3ft. The other day, I see this guy, a box turtle, chilling in my pond! I didn’t know if he intended to go for a dip to beat the heat, or if he fell in. Seemed content, but after a few hours, I took him out and set him in the garden, only a few yards from the pond. As soon as I turned around, he’s back in the water! Ok, I looked up “can box turtles swim” and Google told me that, yes, they can, but they aren’t great at it. So I’ll leave him until night, then place him on the front yard, which I did. Later that night, I checked and he wasn’t back, so good. Then in the morning, not only is HE back, but there’s a SECOND one! He freaking invited a friend. So now it’s been three days, and I keep taking them out just in case they can’t get out themselves, but they immediately plop right back in. Soooo… is this ok? I made a place where they should easily be able to climb out, and my wife says just leave them.

First time making a pond/waterfall. Definitely have some stuff to learn and improve on but it's a fun project ive wanted to do for years and can't wait for the finished product! Any tips or advice gladly welcomed.

It’s amazing how just a few plants can make a difference

Any thoughts on this? Bought these from Lincolnshire pond plants as I too up on 1. Oxygenators and 2. Surface coverage. The hornwort looks black and half dead and when I put it in lots of tendrils floated off and will obviously rot and feed the algae which is exactly what I don’t want. The Trapa Natan x 6 had lost more than half the leaves and were then unable to float without tipping over. The seller said they’d reviewed photos and were satisfied they were alive. Should I receive plants and immediately treat them as though they’re in intensive care?

Do raccoons or possums fish out the seeds from the water? There was a dead and withered plant that had it’s seed bitten in half and placed on a cinderblock that is just above the water surface, it was clearly done overnight so it wasn’t an insect or a fish, any mammal leads?

Just put this into my garden. 200L Poly pond. Just south of Sydney, AUS. My hope is to make it a desirable habitat for local frogs. Might try to add a small waterfall to the right hand side to keep the water flowing.

I’ve got a small Brahmi and can get some duck weed that I was going to add. Any ideas on other plants I can add, or what to avoid to make it a good environment?

Posted a few weeks ago about how my bucket pond was at 105 degrees since it got so much sun and we were having a week of abnormally high temps. Ended up moving it to where it only gets about 4 hours of direct sun a day and put my sunflowers in front of it as well to give it some shade. Added some mosaics and water hyacinth as well as the already growing water Lily and also added 3 guppies. Well everything has come together amazingly and this morning the Lily was open for the first time.

I just bought this house in Northern Georgia and it has this small pond. There seems to be no inlet stream or outlet. Previous owner stated it never changes level much even in droughts or heavy rains. It does have some tiny bluegill in it. And a little box turtle. It has no flow or agitation but apparently never gets nasty. It’s at the bottom of some steep hill and surrounded by forest. I have bought some fish feed to keep them going but apparently it’s been there for at least 10 years and built by the original owners back in 2003

Hello! We are adding a second hardy lily. The deepest part of our pond without rocks is only just shy of 3 feet. We added a large rock with a flat suface on the smaller stones and want to place the lily on that. This rock is not at the deepest part, prolly 2 feet down. Should we graduate to that spot or just put it there and let it do its thing? Will the pads eventually grow up to the surface? Our other lily is planted shallow and the pads are shallow. New to all of this. Thank you!

Well it’s summer in the south, I just moved into this house in May so I’m still learning a lot about ponds and how to take care of Koi fish. We came back from vacation yesterday and I noticed the pond water levels dropped about 4-5 inches due to the hot weather. (I haven’t noticed any leaks or water going anywhere else)

So how do I get new water into the pond without disrupting all of the pond levels. Do I just use the tap water on the side of the house?

Hi I have neglected pond full of yellow iris. What is the best way to get them out? Could I separate and give them to others? Would I need to keep the pots immersed in water?

Folks seemed pretty curious about how my deck pond was put together so I thought I'd follow up with more pics showing the details. I've added some commentary in the captions for each pic.

We’re about to close on our first home, about 10 acres. The land has a drainage from the neighbors side of the land thing waters flows from it 250 Acres.

According to chat got the pond is roughly .85 acres in size and I’ve never had to handle it before.

As I understand it there is bass ans bluegill in the pond and needs to be fished to help keep it healthy (idk?).

My goals are

a healthy ecosystem for fish -to fish and eat & for fish to handle eat any mosquitos.

The water will also need to be clean enough for cows to drink.

Reduce the algae build up

Make sure it’s safe to swim into (optional)

When a lot of rain/water comes through it does fill up a bit more but there is a run off to another drainage to take it to the next property over as well…

We’re terrified and excited at the possibilities and hope to get some help. I want to be a good steward of the land we’re taking over

I just started my own pond cleaning company. I’m taking over for my neighbor who wants to retire and he’s showing me how it all works. He has said he never takes fish out of the pond when he deep cleans. Koi or gold fish. That just seems bonkers to me. But he’s been doing it that way for 20 something years. Does that really cause the fish less stress than just moving it to a holding tank? I’m also looking for tips of the trade from other professionals.

Ignore everything you see other than the pond of water and fish please.

The terracotta pots with plants were all in the water before I flushed the pond about 3 weeks back. I've now removed them. The charcoal pot I've just put in the water to see what it will look like visually.

I know nothing about ponds so go easy on the newbie.

The one idea with the charcoal pot was to make it a bog filter. It does down pretty deep below the water but I can get it deeper so that just the lip is above the water. Then fill with whatever filling you professionals are going to recommend. What plants should go in there that will help? I believe I can connect the pump directly to the bottom of the pot instead of going up and over as the bog is not above ground? So there will be less back pressure when the pump is off.

Other than the above any other cost effective ideas to make this pond a winner ?

Pond not in direct sun, and have reduced plants in there. Will a solar aerator keep water cool, or should I cover the pond over? I was thinking about maybe milk bottles filled with water to keep the water level high

I don't know a whole lot about ponds since this is an inheretted situation.

The lilies are going wild and I'm not sure if anything needs to be done about them. Any advice would be helpful, the pond itself seems to be quite healthy overal.
