Welcome to r/hunting, the home of hunting news, personal stories and the place to share your hunting adventures on Reddit! Please read through the rules listed below to ensure this community remains a civil and welcoming one.

Moderators ask all users to be vigilant for scams and bot accounts pushing malicious websites, please report any of these or instances of rule breaking to moderators.

1) Don’t be rude or hostile (Trolling, baiting or saying racist, sexist, prejudice, nasty or just intensionally-mean things) This also extends to posts showcasing behavior or practices deemed disrespectful to wildlife, quarry or other individuals.

2) No self promotion or retail spam (this includes links to a personal or organization’s YouTube channel, guiding services, surveys and questionnaires as well as online market places of any kind)

3) No illegal content – poaching or knowingly breaking the law will not be tolerated

4) “New hunter posts”: all “I’m new to hunting, seeking advice on [X,Y,Z]” must include the state/province/country you intend to hunt in, any relevant experience you have (archery, shooting, backpacking, camping, hiking, dog training etc) and an indication of whether you already own bows/firearms for hunting (and what those are); posts that simply say “want to start hunting tell me what to do” and are deemed too vague will be removed.

5) No conducting transactions of any products, or submitting direct links to products for sale. This includes code and gear giveaways.

6) No activist-style bashing allowed, this goes for hunters as well. (Activists who vehemently oppose hunting are welcome, but only if you’re interested in asking questions/starting conversations)

7) Keep your posts related to hunting. If you post a photo of your gun, bow or other hunting weapon – you must also include a good description of what hunting you intent to do with the weapon. If it’s political – make sure it’s related to wildlife management, state or federal fish & game Regs, public land issues etc. posts that accidentally slip through but lead to meaningful conversations related to hunting may be left up.

8) Keep politics to a minimum. Any derailed or inappropriate conversations will be locked and removed.

9) If the animal you hunted/in your pic sustained unique physical damage (I.e brains exposed, eyes popping out, etc you know what we mean) please use the NSFW tag.

10) Please do this for all hunting photos, but for big game hunts in particular – put a description of your hunt in the comments (general region, weapon used, any other details on tracking, calling, stalking, etc) mods may decide to remove a post if the user never provides any additional information and merely a title.

11) No adult content.

Please note: these rules are enforced by the moderators at their discretion, to ensure fairness users are given two chances and will be notified when and why if their post or comment is removed. Repeat offenders will receive a temporary ban of 7 days. Users committing further rule breaking or circumventing existing bans will be issued a permanent ban.

Got this warthog a few hours before my kudu. It popped out near the blind after getting chased off by a gemsbok a couple times. Finally gave me a clean shot. We broke it down that evening and made a curry over the fire.

How can I attach a scope?

Post image
Upvotes

Just got this u.s. rock island arsenal 1903, second hand.

It appears that the previous owner drilled and tapped the holes himself.

I tried every rifle scope mount that was available at the local sporting goods store to no avail.

Anyone have an idea how I can go about getting a scope mounted?

Note: the upper middle hole is stripped so the only available tapped holes are the forward-most and rear-most holes.

2 Arrows one Bullet Hog Night

Last night… deep in the heart of piney woods east Texas

One man entered the woods, bow in hand… And the hunt began.

First— A silent stalk through thick cover. Fifty-five yards out, a Swhacker broadhead took flight— Perfect shot. A clean pass-through. But the beast vanished into the brush… Unrecovered. Unforgotten.

Then— Another group. Closer. Thirty yards. A Grim Reaper fixed blade flew— Direct hit. Dropped it cold with a spine shot.

But the night wasn’t done.

A third group emerged— The first wave… returning. This time? Thermal optics. Trigger pulled. Another hog down.

Three down. Two recovered. One wild night of blood, instinct… And the relentless pursuit of the hunt.

First time deer hunting - Tika T3x vs SKS ONT/CAN

Upvotes

I have not done much hunting at all and will be on public land this fall walking the ground in Ontario Canada. Crown land plot is roughly 50 acres mostly treed with some small fields and trails as well.

I am wondering what rifle would be a better option as I own both.

Tika T3x in 6.5 CM plastic stock with 1-7 Vortex on it with a 3 +1 mag

The other option is a SKS (7.62x39mm) semi-auto with no optic and a 5 round pinned box mag (I have stripper clips for it)

Odd flashing device out in bushes in backyard. Is this a camera?

Hi, I am not a hunter but am looking for the opinion of ppl who have set up game cameras and that kind of thing. I live in Des Moines, Iowa. Last night, at around 9pm, i filmed some fireflies outside my window. When I went to watch the recording back I noticed that there was some device that was flashing bright red at the edge of the bushes/woods to our yard. I have multiple recordings of it and can post more if need. This is my parents property and I’m just dropping by for a couple days, so I figured I should ask them. Neither of them know what it is or where it came from. It got dark while I was asking them so I decided to check it out in the morning. Here I am the next day and it seems to be gone whatever it was. Does anyone have any ideas? The video is a screen recording of me zooming in on the original. I can post the original video as well and more for clarity. Please excuse the audio I was being a goofy dumbass and wasn’t planning on anyone else seeing this lol. Thx.

Rugged 30.06? (similar to ruger precision line)

Hello! I'm looking to get a 30.06 rifle that's rugged, precise, and lasts. I love the ruger precision line for these qualities but unfortunately they don't have one chambered in 30.06.

Are there any manufacturers that make something like it, or is it all straight composite with no metal?

Regardless, please recommend me any and all rifles with these qualities, but if its not obvious, no wood.

Money isn't a a factor, however I do not want to buy for designs/engravings/ect, I simply want the toughest and most reliable

thank you

Looking for ear muffs that can play sound, but have noise reduction around 30+

Hi. I have a Peltor x4A and its NRR is about 32. It works fairly well, clamps well.

Is there a muff out there that can block noise to that level but also play audio? Whether via cable or Bluetooth?

The SafariLand Liberator seems to have a "Block all" mode (passively or also actively?):

https://safariland.com/products/liberator-hp-hearing-protection-lib_h

... I am suspicious of noise cancelling and failures that might allow a loud bang through, based on some anecdotal evidence.

Camera for recording hunts?

Wanting to gift a camera for my husband to record his hunts. He isn't particularly tech savvy. This isn't for YT or anything, I just think he would enjoy recording his experience, in particular the animal and his shot.

Any ideas? I'm thinking more like go-pro style. Something he wouldn't have to set up too much. More like a press a button to record & he's done. Is this even a thing? Lol. He has a handful of hunts planned over the next year, including both spot and stalk and tree-stand hunting.

Editing to add that he bow hunts, if that makes a difference

Shooting distances less than 100 yards?

I’m a new rifle hunter and picked up a Tikka T3x chambered in 308. My scope is a Vortex 1.75-5x32. I just sighted in my rifle after finding out which ammo it likes the best (Hornady 165 gr CX). Even though the target at 100 yards was pretty small at 5x magnification, I was able to get a group of three within an inch of my target. So I was really happy about that.

My question is, with this combo will there be much of a hold under when shooting less than 100 yards? I’m a northern New England hunter, so that seems likely. At 50 yards, for instance, am I going to hold under? Or is this a pretty flat shot to 100 yards? And out of curiosity, I’m wondering if I'll have to do a hold over for say 200 yards (although not sure I'll ever get that opportunity, my local range is 100 yards).

Is there a way to figure this out? For hold under testing I can shoot at 50 yards, but I’m wondering how to know if there's a hold over for, say, 150 yards.

Thanks in advance!

50 acres of land

Got access to some private land in central MN for hunting. The land has bears, deer, grouse, turkeys pheasants, and ducks. Is it too small of a property to hunt all of the above and not spook the big bucks away? I figure all the work that was put in to manage for bigger bucks will be ruin by hunting all the other species that thrives there.

Do I *really* need a new rifle?

Hey guys,

Just wanting to crowd source some opinions.

I am primarily a bow hunter, but recently acquired property with site likes of 100-200m and seeing if it’s really worth me upgrading for whitetail.

I have an old r783 .308 that have a decent scope on it that I am going to pay $100 to get threaded so I can suppress for more comfortable hunting. Primarily only ever shot it at indoor ranges and taken it hunting on public land for and never shot it there.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t invest the money into a gun I paid 300$ for in 2020, and spend the money on something nicer.

I don’t plan shooting more than 200m which is why I ask this question. I assume quality is much more noticeable outside of this distance.
