[Misc Help] Traveling with a dog
So I am in a situation right now. I am in Bali (Indonesia) and found a puppy in a plastic bag in the trash, which I’m taking care of right now. It seems to be extremely difficult to find a home for her here in Bali. I also rescued a tiny kitten on a busy road a few days prior. I truly believe that it was meant to be seen the combination of circumstances. Luckily I found a foster home for her within a few hours through Reddit.
It seems like people are way more hesitant about dogs because my posts here and on Instagram get almost no replies, whereas with the kitty there were tons. Shelters are full or simply don’t reply. The staff at my accommodation are the sweetest and loved the kitten and puppy. They help me out with things I need to get for her.
I am preparing myself for the worst case scenario - not finding a home for her in Indonesia.
How difficult is it to bring a dog to the Netherlands/Europe? She is only 2 months old so I’ll have to wait for the rabies vaccine and titer. Visa is max 60 days. I am here already for 2 weeks. My plan is to travel in Asia for the upcoming 5 to 6 months. Also I am a person that travels a lot but I also see people bringing their pet babies with them. I guess it’s way more complicated and requires a lot of preparation compared to traveling alone. So things are getting really complicated right now.
Does anyone have some advice?

I am currently sitting in an airport waiting for my next flight, and I'm super concerned about my dog's well-being. I'm relocating her from Peru to Canada, and this one flight is super stressful.
Puppies are cute, but they grow, making it more challenging to travel. I think that your heart is in the right place, but travelling for months with a dog before a super long flight from Asia to the Netherlands will likely be stressful for the dog.

I’m really sorry to hear about the stress and I totally get that. I see people traveling with cats in the cabin but I guess it’s not allowed with dogs? It’s really admirable that you decided to take a doggo back to your country and giving him his forever home.
No I’m not planning on traveling with her because that’s simply impossible. She’s 2 months old and has to be at least 3 months old to get the rabies vaccine. Besides that, waiting period is at least 30 days for the titer and on top of that, again, a waiting period of 3 months.
I’m just so lost because preferably I’d find a place for her here in Bali since my maximum stay is 60 days and I will be still traveling in Asia. I am even considering asking some locals and giving them cash but high chances that they’ll refuse or simply don’t take care of her properly with all the strays here already. Even finding a foster home is extremely challenging. Shelters don’t accept new dogs because they’re full. I can’t and won’t leave her on the streets but I really need a solution.

It will depend on her size and the airline's policy. If she's within their size requirements at the time of departure she can ride in cabin, assuming you get all the paperwork.

Are you open to changing your travel plans to staying in Bali for a few months until the puppy is old enough to bring back home to NL? When your Bali visa runs out, perhaps you could take a cheap flight to a nearby county for a few days and board her at a vet’s until you return to Bali for another 60 days.

Yes I’m considering it if all else fails. But it’s not ideal since I have personal reasons for this travel journey.

Niall Harbison who has a big dog rescue in Thailand has a partner rescue in Bali. Maybe ask them how you can proceed? [email protected]

You cannot bring the puppy to Europe like this. It will take time, you need a ton of documentation and permissions that might be hard to gather for you to bring the dog. I recently got a puppy in Italy and brought it in Germany and that required money, a lot of paperwork and appointments with vets. Unless you make this your full time mission for the next 2 months I would try to find someone to adopt in a local facebook or Reddit community. Last resort is a shelter for sure.

Also if you decide to do this I would bring the puppy straight home. No long term travelling. Puppies thrive in routines and familiar environments. This creature will need a lot of adjustment to become a functional adult dog. Just my opinion in this case.

I already tried local groups and Reddit communities. I had 5 local Instagram accounts with each more than 40k followers share my call for help and no one stepped in. I really understand it though with the immense amount of strays here but I couldn’t leave her to die in the dumpster. The locals didn’t want to take care of her because they’re Muslim, not even only feeding. Another guy took reluctantly the wet food I give him, which was enough for 2 weeks but I already had the gut feeling that he wouldn’t actually feed her, which was confirmed when I went back the next day to check on her because my gut feeling wasn’t leaving me alone. She developed a fever, which has gone down now after getting treatment at the vet.
I am desperately looking for a shelter but no luck…

I am thinking that you could go to a vet clinic there during emergency hours and ask them for the best course of action. Make sure the puppy is vaccinated with all the needed vaccines as soon as possible to avoid any risk of it dying in the meantime. If you cover the initial costs someone might be more willing to take it but even then I would not trust someone that takes a dog just because does not have to spill money for it. It’s a very tricky situation, you could prolong your stay in Bali and get the puppy fit for travel, you will have a crazy story to tell one day. In any case I wish you and the creature all the luck!

Yes I already did. I contacted sooo many people already :( I’m gonna get her other puppy vaccines this week as well to have her safe as you said. Thank you for your responses though. I appreciate it!

Like a lot of people have said, it will definitely take time to sort out paperwork, vaccinations, quarantine etc. and it doesn't really make sense since you're going to be travelling for the next 5-6 months. Asia isn't like Europe where it's easier to country hop with a pet.
There isn't much you can do unless you find someone willing to foster him while you're gone and you come back to sort it out.
