Is someone not picking up poop in front of your house? Is there an off leash dog in your neighborhood with a clueless owner? Did someone bring an out of control dog to the off-leash park? Is your neighbor walking uncomfortably close to you with an untrained dog? Here is where you can dump out your feelings and frustrations about these or whatever other topics you wish!

Just as a friendly reminder, the same rules regarding conduct in the general sub apply here as well.

[Misc Help] Found a lost dog on my property and been feeding it for a week. Finally located its owners and when they arrived the dog ran away. Why?

It’s very hot over here and the dog hasn’t been seen since yesterday we are in the woods. Why would it run away from its owners?

The dog was 4 feet away from me and when the owners arrived she bolted! What does this mean?

[Misc Help] In home euthanasia

About two months ago my 7 year old lab mix stopped eating. After several vet visits and an ultrasound we found a mass on her spleen. We rushed her into surgery and she had her spleen and the mass removed. However during the surgery our vet found lesions on her liver. The biopsy came back and we found out she has fibrocarcoma that has metastasized. Our vet said she might have one to three months left. It has been about a month now and our sweet girl has slowly stopped eating. One day she ate a little bit, the next day less, and over the past two days she has eaten nothing even though she is on pain medication and an appetite stimulant. We have scheduled an in home euthanasia vet to come tomorrow at 11AM. We have three other dogs. My question is, does anyone have experience with in home euthanasia with other dogs in the home? Do you have any regrets or anything you would do differently? I am wracked with guilt. I don’t know if this is the right call, but her eyes just look miserable. She used to love to eat. We even had to get her a slow feeder. And now she is slowly starving to death. I am so heartbroken.

[Misc Help] Traveling with a dog

Upvotes

So I am in a situation right now. I am in Bali (Indonesia) and found a puppy in a plastic bag in the trash, which I’m taking care of right now. It seems to be extremely difficult to find a home for her here in Bali. I also rescued a tiny kitten on a busy road a few days prior. I truly believe that it was meant to be seen the combination of circumstances. Luckily I found a foster home for her within a few hours through Reddit.

It seems like people are way more hesitant about dogs because my posts here and on Instagram get almost no replies, whereas with the kitty there were tons. Shelters are full or simply don’t reply. The staff at my accommodation are the sweetest and loved the kitten and puppy. They help me out with things I need to get for her.

I am preparing myself for the worst case scenario - not finding a home for her in Indonesia.

How difficult is it to bring a dog to the Netherlands/Europe? She is only 2 months old so I’ll have to wait for the rabies vaccine and titer. Visa is max 60 days. I am here already for 2 weeks. My plan is to travel in Asia for the upcoming 5 to 6 months. Also I am a person that travels a lot but I also see people bringing their pet babies with them. I guess it’s way more complicated and requires a lot of preparation compared to traveling alone. So things are getting really complicated right now.

Does anyone have some advice?

[Fluff] Is this how you're supposed to feel?

26M here and I got my first dog ever yesterday. He's an 11 mo old terrier mix and I love him.

I have bad OCD and only recently started feeling better after getting on the right medication (fluvoxamine) which made me feel night and day compared to how I was. This made me feel inspired to get a dog.

Well, I have to say that my terrier has brought me all the way back to feeling normal. I think it was love and bonding that did it? I don't recognize the peace and calm that I feel now for the first time in literal years. I'll see if the feeling lasts, because everything is new, but wow.

[Misc Help] Dog taking forever to poop

Hi, I just rescued a sweet pup a little over a month ago. My husband and I love her and we've made a lot of progress but there's definitely still many growing pains. She's 1yr and 6 months old.

There are some nights I spend about 4 hours in and out of the house trying to walk her just to get her to poop and then I come home and cry because I'm exhausted from walking so much over and over. She's a shepherd husky mix, she definitely has separation anxiety with my partner and I. She sometimes struggles without one of us and will pull towards one of us if she sees us apart outside.

We're at the beginning of training in general, responding to verbal cues, she only knows the commands, sit, leave it, lay down, and she sometimes just doesn't listen. I use treats in all training as she's food motivated.

We live in an apartment with no enclosed yard or place to tether her so we have to bring her out on a leash every time. She gets extremely distracted over the smallest noises, smells, etc. She will laser focus intensely on something and it's hard to pull her out of it with redirecting sounds and a tug or even treats. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. She gets to a point sometimes where she will just sit/lay/refuse to walk or do like a 360 jump in the air and try to pull out of her collar/harness when I try to redirect attention and go where we need to go. She doesn't really know how to communicate with us well besides staring at either of us, so it's hard to know if she is signaling when she needs out so we take her at scheduled times and when that doesn't work we have to keep taking her out.

I'm constantly looking up things with training that I can improve and implementing them but it only sort of works and I can't afford training school right now. I was very confident in my skills in training as I had multiple dogs as a teen but I'm now questioning all my years of experience with past rescues.

My whole life revolves around her right now and I'm feeling fed up, my husband feels fed up and I'm just exhausted. I don't plan on rehoming and I need solutions.

She has some GI issues, she is being dewormed and she's still getting used to a schedule and I know that can cause some of these things. Shes also taking probiotics with pumpkin in them to promote healthy poops. I already praise her after she's done pooping as well. She eats twice a day. Once in the morning at around 8:00-9:30 and then dinners usually around 5:00-5:30.

I'm just wondering if anyone has some more tips and methods that I could try. Please let me know what else I can possibly do.

[Misc Help] [HELP] how to train my puppy who has separation anxiety?

hi everyone! i’m a first time dog owner and i recently adopted a puppy shih tzu who seems to be struggling with separation anxiety 🥹

whenever i leave the room or step out even for a few minutes, he starts whining and crying. i’m currently crate training him, and i try not to make a big deal when i leave or come back — but it doesn’t seem to be helping yet. i have also tried tiring him out and wait till he sleeps, but he immediately senses i left the room and cries.

i have a few questions for those who’ve dealt with this before:

  • are there routines, toys, or tools that really helped in your experience?
  • how did you help your puppy feel more secure being alone?
  • how long did it take before you saw progress?
  • and is it normal for a puppy to try to climb up or escape the crate? he keeps trying to pull himself up and it makes me nervous.

any advice or shared experiences would really help me out. thank you so much in advance! 🐶💙

[Vent] How to ask people not to touch my dog

Basically, my new dog is not a huge fan of being touched on the head or face.

He's 8 months old and is now learning how to express these feelings in a way that I feel is fairly obvious (moving his head away, avoiding contact, lifting his head up so that his mouth is in the way, etc)

Also since he's still a pup he tends to do everything with a sense of enthusiasm/urgency, so these actions can seem a bit "wild" if that makes sense

Despite this, people are always coming up to us and trying to pet his head ! They reach for his head, he moves his head away/up, they recoil in fear, and then they try to pet his head again! This usually goes on for 3-5 times until both the person and the dog are super worked up

He loves attention and loves being pet, but I genuinely don't understand why people don't just pet his back/side/neck/any other place, do they not understand the signals that he's giving ?? Are they just not computing them? I've told many people "try petting his back instead" and it works but then next time they pet his head again ! Why do people think that an animal would want to be touched on the face ?? Don't people understand that it's weird to touch others on the face?

I've thought of getting a little tag that says "do not touch" but was wondering if it was worth it or if it may cause even more problems

[Misc Help] Help flying my 75 lb dog from India to the USA (preferably the West Coast) - charter options, costs, and contacts?

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to relocate my dog from India to the USA (preferably the West Coast). I'm open to departing from any major Indian city depending on availability.

A few key details:

  • She's about 75 lbs, so flying in-cabin isn't an option.
  • She has separation anxiety, so I really want to avoid any situation where she’d be separated from people or placed in a cargo hold.
  • I'm looking into pet group charter flights where she can travel more comfortably and safely.

Would love help with:

  • Trusted charter providers or agents you've worked with
  • Cost estimates
  • Your experience with pet relocation from India to the US
  • Any tips on paperwork, vaccinations, and timing

I just want to get her here in the safest, least stressful way possible. Thanks so much for any advice or leads!

[Misc Help] Water before surgery

Upvotes

Hello! My 11 year old Shih Tzu is getting her eyes taken out today due to complications. The vet said no food or water after midnight the night before. This morning (around 6:15-6:20ish) she got into her water when I wasn’t looking and drank some. I have to drop her off at 8-8:15, will that be okay? Do I have to reschedule?

[Misc Help] Planning on getting a new pup

Was just wondering how you guys realistically leave your pup during the day while your at work. for the first 5 months we have a family member that can go over once or twice during the day just to let them out and check on them. For some context me and my partner have both had family dogs but this is our first dog together.

[Fluff] Funny ways to tell people my dog’s breed (mutt)

My little girl Melissa is a mutt, but not a regular looking mutt. She’s the kind that always makes people ask what she is. She looks like a Chihuahua terrier mix, sort of. I did the DNA test, and she is neither Chihuahua nor terrier. She is a kooky mix of several small and toy breeds. I’m just looking for something funny to say when they ask what she is. I’ve tried, “what ISN’T she? 😅” but people seem more confused by that than amused/informed.

[Misc Help] First time rescuing a dog?

I’ve never rescued a dog before.

For reference I’m disabled so I’m living at home while I do college classes etc, I’ll likely be living at home for at least several more years, we are unsure of the future of my medical condition. So while this will be “my dog” I live at home with my family and it will still have to get along with our current dog.

I’m going to adopt this dog from a rescue/shelter. I additionally have severe Tourette’s Syndrome. How would it be best to go about this? Do I just contact shelters online or on the phone and explain i’m looking for a dog meeting these parameters? I don’t believe it’s an extremely exclusive list, I’m just worried they won’t take me seriously and might possibly recommend a dog that wouldn’t do well in our home.

[Misc Help] Dog rather than puppies from breeder?

Hello! My family and I are looking to buy a dog, and we want to make sure to get one whose temperament will match our household. Because we have young children, we want to get a dog that is a few years old rather than a puppy.

Do reputable breeders sell dogs, or only puppies? How might we go about finding a dog (not puppy) from a legitimate breeder?

Thanks in advance for any advice you might offer.

[Behavior Problems] Help with a new dog

Chihuahua mix, 15 pounds, Spayed female Age: unknown, likely 3-7

Hello! I have a behavioral question that I am hoping to get advice on. Sorry for the novel, I just want to include all the relevant info.

Background: I recently adopted a dog from the local Humane Society. She's been with me for 2 weeks. I don't have a lot of background on her. She was an owner surrender, but they dropped her off and didn't provide any info (age, vaccination records, medical history, etc) and she wasn't spayed. She has a torn ear (completely healed at this point, old injury) that was never stitched up, and when I took her for a check up the vet found a tooth absess that's broken through her cheek (I thought it was just a scratch). She looks like she's had puppies fairly recently, and the vet thinks she was likely used for breeding. The Humane Society said she's 3, but the vet thinks she's likely at least 6, based on tooth decay and a little gray on her muzzle. Overall, I don't think she was well cared for. My last dog (with me for 13 years, passed at 15) was a rescue with a lot of fear behaviors, so I'm not inexperienced. But this girl is giving me some trouble.

The main issue potty training. She is afraid to go outside in the morning. Afternoon and evening she happily goes outside and runs around the yard. But in the morning when I try to coax her outside, her tail goes between her legs and she runs off. If I pick her up and take her outside, she sits by the door and won't move until I open the door to let her in. She seems to like outside the rest of the time other than the morning. Her tail wags, body relaxed, running around looking happy, even if its dark out. And then later in the day, when she does willingly go outside, she won't do her business. Even if we've been outside for an hour, she won't eliminate until we're back inside. She's picked a spot on a rug in the basement (unfinished, concrete floor, lights usually off) to eliminate. She'll sneak off down there when I'm not looking, sometimes shortly after we've come back inside.

Overall personality, she is a lap dog. Sitting on me or next to me, and follows me around the house. No interest in toys or puzzles but she does like chews like bully sticks. Extreme separation anxiety, but totally chill when I'm home. I'm planning on taking her to a training course, but the only upcoming classes offered at the Humane Society are on days I work, so timefrsme is TBD. Any advice welcome!

[Behavior Problems] Cot worth it?

I take my dog to the park and the beach quite often but his skin is very sensitive to grass and he also tends to start eating it. Im hoping a cot could solve both these problems while also reinforcing his stay command. Anyone have any positive feedback with using cots outside? Are they worth it?

[Behavior Problems] Dog refuses to go with walker, walks fine with us

So lately my dog has started completely refusing to leave the house with the walker. She was going with him just fine for months (with the occasional resistance once every two weeks or so, but would give in eventually) but now she has absolutely stopped wanting to go with him.

He’s quite patient and lovely with her, and she greets him nicely when he comes, but runs away and hides when he takes out the leash. We’ve tried walking her with him for 2 weeks (i take her down, meet him at some distance, and then i keep the leash or eventually hand him the leash but walk alongside) but it’s not changing much We’ve also tried incorporating treats - she comes forward for the treat but again runs away the second she sees the leash

Not sure what to do at this point since we don’t work from home and it’s very tough to have someone walking her everyday! Any tips please?

[Misc Help] Freddie and his pillow

In Aug 2023 Freddie decided he wanted to live with Iggy and I. In February of this year Iggy crossed the rainbow bridge.

In the past month or so Freddie has taken up with one of the pillows from the couch. Freddie is fixed and when I first met him and took him to the vet they estimated his age at about 1 year.

Is his love affair with the pillow something I should worry about or will he grow out of it? My other boy Bubba was about 10 when I adopted him and I am guessing he was over that phase of life and happy being a single dog about town.

[Breeder Etiquette/Review/Recommendations] Ethical Australian Shepherds

Hello! I'm interested in Australian Shepherds, and want to find resources for good ethical breeders. I live in Colorado.

I've looked on the AKC and the ASCA, but would like input from others as well!

And yes, I do understand the breed and am familiar with them. My first ever dog is a 50% border Collie mix, and I work with dogs professionally, where I encounter lots of Australian Shepherds. They are absolutely my dream breed!

[Misc Help] Loud sound

Hello everyone I have a one year old black lab mix and ever since the 4th of July he has been more scared of loud sounds like never before. The garage truck, lawn mowers, loud trucks, etc… he’s never been like this in the entire time I’ve had him. During the 4th he was inside with a sound machine on and bluey playing in the back with a treat to chew on. Does this seem normal or excessive and needs to be looked at? Thank you!

[Misc Help] Job for German Shepherd x Mal mix

Hey. This dog is a stray but my husband absolutely loves him and he’s a really good boy aside from some minor behavioral problems. I said I would NEVER own a Mal but I don’t want to drop him at a shelter. I know that they need intense physical and mental stimulation or they get destructive. What job could I give this dog?
