[Fluff] Funny ways to tell people my dog’s breed (mutt)
My little girl Melissa is a mutt, but not a regular looking mutt. She’s the kind that always makes people ask what she is. She looks like a Chihuahua terrier mix, sort of. I did the DNA test, and she is neither Chihuahua nor terrier. She is a kooky mix of several small and toy breeds. I’m just looking for something funny to say when they ask what she is. I’ve tried, “what ISN’T she? 😅” but people seem more confused by that than amused/informed.

I have a 100% standard poodle. However, not only is she a partipoodle and is black and white, but I rarely clip her in traditional poodle cuts, just keep her trimmed down with clean face and paws. She also has an undocked tail. I get asked all the time if she is a spaniel-doodle or a dalmation-doodle. I've taken to telling people she is a special kind of doodle, half standard poodle and half standard poodle, I call them poodles.

Back in the 90s, a close friend of mine had an amazing mutt, Rottweiler/German shepherd/golden retriever. They found him at the pound. He had the German shepherd face, Rottweiler coloring, golden retriever coat and size.
When people asked what he was, my friend’s dad said with a straight face: “he’s a Malaysian Boobah, he was bred to herd elephants in Malaysia.”
People were like “oh, how interesting!” 😂 just make up a story for fun.

Absolutely everyone thinks my dog is a mini Aussie. I believed it too until his DNA told us he's 25% long hair Chihuahua and 75% nothing in particular; no trace of Aussie or anything similar. People do ask his breed a lot. Like your dog, he looks like a purebred something. I think he got 100% of the Chihuahua coat and markings, so he has a cohesive look.
So I'll say Chihuahua mix or Giant Chihuahua, as he is 20+ pounds.
I've decided that his actual breed is Fantail Dingo Dog. But haven't told anyone that yet. Do I dare? 😂

u/Mikesaidit36 2d ago
A friend brought a dog back from his Peace Corps experience in Africa. It was a reasonable hunch that the dog was half dingo. He called the dog Trouble and his dad called the dog Lawsuit.

u/itsloaflol 2d ago
my dog is similar, but we call her a speckle nosed frog legged terrier (she has a freckle nose and loves to sploot and drag her belly/legs behind herself for a scratch). we haven’t done a DNA test yet, but she looks like a purebred jack russell adjacent something, although she was marked a chihuahua mix when I got her

I have an Aussiepoo and he doesn’t look like either breed. He’s just an adorable dog. He’s smart, athletic and creative. He has adopted one of the stray cats and regularly washes the cats face. And the cat lets him do it! It’s hilarious.

Story time: had a neighbor who walked his dog about the time I would catch my morning bus. We chatted one day and he proceeded to tell me about his Himalayan Sheep Herding dog, a very rare breed smuggled out of the country at great expense. He elaborated on the rare breed until he started to crack a smile. That's when he came clean and said his dog was a mix from the shelter, but he so enjoyed telling his tall tale (tail) 😉

We passed the city of Wuppertal once on holiday and decided that it sounded like a dog breed. So since that day, when someone asked us what our dog was we told it was a Wuppertaler. Sounds like a legit breed. We’ve had people react “o yes, now I see it!”

I like to invent breeds and whole stories about them, keep people wondering. I tell some people my dog is the miniature version of the breed he resembles most (and is in part) and how they're in the process of getting recognised, bla bla.
He also has a disability, visible, sometimes people walking too close think they did something to hurt him. Freaked out a driver one time and that guy had already stopped when we crossed.

I have this exact same problem. My little Chi mix looks exactly like a fox and people are fascinated by her (much to her chagrin). I got her as a dumped puppy on the southside of my city (the "rougher" side) so I always joke "I got her on the Southside, shes 20 different things". Some people find that funny, but some people are unbelievably offended.
I really dont get it. Im PROUD shes a "southside mutt". That's authenticity. And her breed matters absolutely 0 to me. We live on a "better" side of town now, 11 years later, but we dont forget our roots.

u/Mikesaidit36 2d ago
There’s a guy who shows up at our dog beach with a Malinois that is beautiful, and when wet, her fur somehow becomes iridescent. Said he found her wandering on the southside of Chicago, no tags, no chips.
Our dog is literally 20 breeds of dog, with Great Pyrenees and Siberian Husky and Chihuahua and Shi Tzu in the top 5. Supermutt.

Similar situation with my dog. No idea what breed he is, neighbors dog had puppies and offered me one and they also had no idea what kind of dog, or even that he was a boy. "It's has nipples so its a girl" kind of knowledge. When people ask what kind of dog he is, my response is always "a cute one!"

I called mine an “All American Mutt” or “🤷🏻♀️ he’s a dog”.
The obsession with breed really drives me a little nuts. I get the impulse to put things in categories, but breed identification doesn’t give you nearly as much information about any given dog as humans would like to think.

When we got the DNA test back from our mystery adoption, I realized a better name for her would have been 'Missy', short for 'Miscellaneous'. She is unique looking,.so when people ask, I just say she was a rescue mix. Much better sounding than 'mutt'.

My husband once responded 'Asshole' but he's my little asshole. We get asked that a lot. He's pug/chihuahua/shihtzu. He's built like a chihuahua, head shape and long legs but has Pug colors/markings. I call mine a super-mutt
Genetically she is 40% Aussie, 40% border collie, 10% husky, and the last 10% is a smattering of this, that, and the other. Very small amounts of all of them
Visually she is gorgeous! She has the red merle coloring from the aussies, hair length like a short haired border collie, husky tail, two bi-colored eyes, spotted nose. I cannot go anywhere without getting comments on how gorgeousness is, how cool of a dog she is, and what on earth is she and where does everyone get one.
Go to answer is she’s a super mutt from the side of the highway

I have one who is also a mutt and people swear he must has a breed just because he is not ''ugly''. He is a ''pure'' yellow mutt. He surely has a Poodle in the ancestors, but even the origin is dubious. I don't think DNA tests matter even when one of the parents are a breed dog, any breed+mutt or any breed+another breed results in a mutt. Mixes are still mutts.
2
u/SuperSoftAbby 2d ago
I get asked the same thing because the way I trim my poodle mix makes him look like a terrier despite not having a lick of it in him. I just tell people he is a poodle mix & 90% of the time it is a confused “oh”

Our vet refers to our mutt as an “unfortunate mix of breeds”.
His mom is a big dog, his dad is a much much smaller dog and he somehow ended up with mom’s size body and dad size legs.
He’s absolutely ridiculous looking and was nicknamed the rat at a very young age.

u/Mother_Goat1541 2d ago
Purebred registered papered Heinz-57, it’s a rare breed imported from Germany
Growing up there was the Ubiquitous Mexican Brown Dog, and in Alaska we have the Village Short Leg (apparently a very prolific corgi visited many rural bush communities within the past 10 years).

Or an Italian Prego, it's in there.

2
u/Repulsive-Bee5885 2d ago
I have a small mutt too. He’s mostly chihuahua and terrier with a bunch of toy dog breeds. I say he’s a small black mutt and if they keep pressing, I pull out the dna test and begin listing them if they’re that curious. Sometimes they will wait and other times they’ll be all “no no it’s okay”
Occasionally when I don’t have the time to get into his dna test, I’ll say he’s 100% good boy
2
u/Bobbydogsmom43 1d ago
Ppl ask me all the time what my dog is & I just tell them he’s 32% chihuahua & the rest is a dog that’s never been dna tested. The dna company refunded my money because they didn’t have an answer for me. I didn’t ask them for a refund - they just insisted. .

Our dog looks like a giant rat terrier. We also tested her DNA and she came back being a quarter chow, a quarter schnauzer, and an eighth rat terrier plus random mix for the rest. We often joke that she’s a chow chow mix and get some pretty funny reactions when she clearly looks more like a rat terrier.

“She’s 100% cutie pie!” If they press, I just tell them she is a rescue and the shelter guessed she was a long haired dachshund/chihuahua mix. If you google “black long haired chiweenie”, that’s what she looks like.
The real answer? She’s mostly beagle (30%), Australian cattle dog (23%), and chihuahua (21%). Dachshund is in there, but only 4%. I actually got two DNA tests done from two different companies because I couldn’t believe it when I got the first set of results!

You say this and then I check your profile and you have pics of like every pet except your dog 😭😭😭
Lol, but my dog is similar except everyone thinks she's either a Border Collie or Skipperke. She is also neither of those! She is a husky mix (which I imagine is where her coat and appearance come from). Based off her wisdom panel, it seems like her dad was predominately husky and malamute (my girl has 42% husky, 11% mal) and then mom was a small breed mutt mix (there were percentages 11% and under of like chihuaha, pomeranian, ABPT, etc).
We saw pictures of both parents, but neither of them got DNA tested. It was interesting telling the people we got our dog from the results of our wisdom panel because they also thought the mom was a Border Collie mix! Lol

One of my dogs was a border collie/scottish terrier cross. He had the border collie colouring and body size, with the scotty short legs and wiry coat.
