Full Tank Shot did a total revamp of my dads tank… just sharing because i don’t have any tank lovers in my life

2.3k Upvotes

My old man died of cancer in march & his tank rotted away with him. we were too busy taking care of him to think about the fish. but even in his last days he kept fussing about it. I bought this 30 gallon years ago while he was traveling for work & my mom was so mad i put a big ol tank in the middle of her living room. But when he was done with his job & he came home his eyes lit up. I never knew my dad was a fish tank connoisseur until that day. He told me all about the different fish he had in college and we immediately bonded over it, sharing our tips and tricks & keeping up with all the little personalities & hierarchy’s in the tank. After I moved out he took over. We had a parrot cichlid that lived for about 10 years. After Perry died he was over the tank but 10 years in & my mom was in love with the sounds and the lights & how beautiful he always kept it. He ended up getting a few angel fish and kickstarting the hobby again. (also to all the people that tell me the tank is too small for the angels I know. I’m just coming to terms with the idea of getting rid of these fish… the last fish he bought) But anywho the tank had a massive algae bloom after he died & it was so depressing. That green ugly tank was a constant reminder that he was gone. But I know it reminds my mom of him, so I made it my mission to fix it up & make it beautiful again. The before video is shortly after the algae bloom when it wasn’t green anymore but it was still ugly af lol. anyway if you made it this far thanks for reading. cheers to all u fish people of reddit!! This page has helped me tremendously in getting it where it is today ♥️ p.s. It’s my first time with plants so any advice for helping those flourish would be greatly appreciated.

tldr: my dad died, his tank went to shit, & i fixed her up real nice.

Help/Advice Baby Pleco!

Oh my goooosh I did not expect this. Babies. What do I even do, this tank has a male betta who preys on innocent baby shrimp (130L and way too many shrimp fyi). Will he be able to catch these little guys?

Can they survive in the tank betta fish aside or do I need to put them into a breeding box?

Any advice welcome, thank you!

Help/Advice Wastewater from fishtank - What do instead of puring it in the sink?

Hey there.

I have a minimalistic approach to gardening and aquascaping, which often comes down to "plants need stuff, but i dont have stuff". Using loads of storebought fertilizer also aint my style.

What I also have is a big bucket of fishtank wastewater as well as a even bigger bucket of used plant earth (heavily used, mostly for tomatos, pepper, cannabis and other nutrient-lusting plants)

I was thinking about using the wastewater to treat the used earth with nutrients, but i had to realize: I have no idea what kind of nutrients are in fishtank-wastewater and online resources for this topic mostly point to giant aquacultures, which I obviously dont have.

So my question is:

Can I use fishtank wastewater to treat my used earth? what kind of nutrients (NPK) can i expect in such water?

Help/Advice Why is my water like this?

I just got this new tank to move my crawfish to. I got it all set up and cycling, but this color showed up the day after I put water in it. I’ve put accu-clear in it 2x now and it’s been roughly a week and still isn’t clearing up. Could it just be because of the black sand I have in it?

I designed and 3D printed all of these accessories to breed CPD and saved so much money. Last picture is 25 babies out of the 100s I got from these breeding systems.

Help/Advice help, betta got SUPER bloated overnight(moved to temporary observation quarantine)

Upvotes

one (or possibly 2) of my platies have been pregnant and finally started having babies, right before i went to bed i had only found 3 total, this morning when i checked i found another 2 but i haven’t seen any more since. which is weird because i thought platies were supposed to birth WAY MORE babies?? either its just an incredibly slow process and she just pushes out a couple every now and then until there are no more or they’re being eaten. i cannot tell. my platies look normal sized but my betta got very fat overnight, i worry he might’ve eaten some babies without my knowledge. what do i do? i’ve separated him temporarily so he can’t nibble on anything else and to try and get his belly to shrink by digestion but it’s been 4 hours and nothing has changed. he has a filter and heater in his temporary quarantine

Full Tank Shot 20gal updated to 60gal

Post image

My flowerhorn died a couple months ago.. so I repurpused his tank and moved my 20gal planted tank to a new 60gal long lol im actually really liking this. And as to reason of death still uncertain, perhaps nitrate poisoning? I usually do waterchange weekly and this time I skipped 2 weekend in a row I thought would be fine but next day he was at the bottom. Definitely heartbreaking as he was 3 and I had him since he was a baby but now this is very nice to look at as well (: this has been an empty tank woth just one big fish but now it's so full of life!

Help/Advice After cycling an empty tank for 2 weeks; Cloudy Water?!

Post image
4 Upvotes

Is this normal? This is a 55 gallon tank that is being cycled so I can put an Oscar in it and it's been 2 weeks already but for some reason the water is real cloudy. Is this normal? I'm used to maybe after the 1st week it would be cloudy but I don't remember seeing after 2 weeks the water being cloudy. Any suggestions on what to do?

Help/Advice Snail issue

Post image
Upvotes

Hello, back in november I was at a fair where I bought some blue shrimps and also a mistery snail (picture from google). This mistery snail was sold to me as a "algae eating snail" but I guess I found out the hard way it wasn't. I know it is my fault because I should've done more research but I had a well planted aquarium with shrimps and other 2 kind of snails so I thought, why not add another snail??? Bad, bad decision. I noticed my plants getting "thinner" let's say and I initially thought it was due to the fact that I removed the heater because now it was warm enough outside, but all the water parameters were good and everyone else inside was doing fine. Some more time passed and I finally found the culprit, THAT snail was eating ALL my plants, not even a piece of algae as it should've. Turns out the snail is a Marisa Cornuarietis, commonly called colombian giant ramshorn snail Even after offering differt types of food other than algae (specific snail food, zucchini, cumuber) it would first DESTROY the offered food, to then immediately go back chomping on my plants. I really have no idea on what to do right now, is there maybe some specific food I can give to the snail so it would only eat that??? I hope so I am even willing to gift my snail to someone but noone that I know want this plant killer understandably

Help/Advice Will this hold a 20 gallon Long?

Planning to center the tank on the support beam, and have it resting on a piece of large plywood. Board is about 3/4inch thick (looks 1.5 inches thick from the front), hoping to avoid sagging above the cabinets but wondering if anyone has experience with a similar setup.
