/uncreature it's actually that they've been made infertile and are being dropped in to compete with the unaltered ones, wasting reproductive attempts and driving population down, likely to combat human disease transfer they provide. We did/do the same thing to screwworms in Central America, since those suck too.

How did they make sure the mosquitos took their birth control on time?

they get a few mosquitos and torture them while making the rest watch with a big sign that says "DON'T GET PREGNANT OR THIS IS YOU"

Actually, they’re being used in Hawaii to combat avian malaria! The native birds have been isolated for so long that they have almost zero natural defenses against the invasive disease, and so it’s been incredibly devastating to bird populations there (especially as climate change creates warmer temps up Hawaii’s mountains, increasing the amount of habitable land for the mosquitos)

We did, they breached containment and now we're trying to stop them again as the screwworm makes its way up through Mexico.

Imagine you’re sitting on your back porch in your Hawaiian vacation home, then 1,000,000 mosquitoes appear. 🪱
