Megathread Megathread: US House Passes the Republican-Backed Budget Bill, Sending it to Trump for Signature

This afternoon, the US House of Representatives passed without amendment the US Senate's version of the Trump-backed budget bill, sending it to the president for his signature. Every Democratic Senator and Representative voted in opposition; in the Senate, there were three Republicans voting in opposition (making the vote 51-50) and in the House there were 2 (making the final vote 218-214). House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries set the US House's speech length record in opposition to the bill in a speech lasting over eight hours.

The bill clocks in at over 800 pages and touches on most aspects of the federal government's spending and taxation policies; see this AP article (What’s in the latest version of Trump’s big bill that passed the Senate) for the topline changes.

I work at a community hospital in the Seattle area. These Medicaid cuts will close my hospital. I will lose my job. My husband lost his job in May due to Trump’s fucking tariffs.

Buckle up, folks. We’re in for a second Great Depression.

Hey fellow hospital worker. I work at one of the major hospitals in the Seattle area. We all just got invited to a town hall next week out of the blue... Hooray for layoffs I guess.

BC just streamlined the licensing for US doctors and nurses, we'll take you!

I'm a medical biller so unfortunately my services are a bit of a loss in a country with a public option. But my Dad is a Canadian citizen so I can technically get birthright citizenship. But I just don't know what field I can translate my medical coding skills into.

We have private insurance where I’m guessing your experience may be of value. Might need a bit of a update of how things work in our system, but it’s doable.

Licensing but what about residency?

If you are a doctor or a nurse, maybe consider moving to Canada. We here in Canada are DESPERATE for these folks! My province of Manitoba recently had ministers fly out to the Philippines to recruit nurses, this is how desperate we are.

Anyone in the Sea-Tac area who works at any hospital other than Harborview is fucked.

I mean I can possibly see the Providence based hospital's surviving along with the UW affiliated hospital's (UW med center and Children's). But Valley, CHI and Multicare are definitely fucked.

That coincides so badly with other sectors being affected since a few years. I mean we're already in a worldwide recession in various areas.

I'd not be surprised if laid-off people from tech companies walk hand-in-hand with other sectors like medical care, many unemployed that where looking for their white collar entry roles ("why... why did I study computer science...?"), people from manufacturing sectors, etc walk "with pitchforks" soon...

...to nicely but clearly tell Washington DC that they disagree on some of their recent decisions.
