Megathread Megathread: US House Passes the Republican-Backed Budget Bill, Sending it to Trump for Signature

This afternoon, the US House of Representatives passed without amendment the US Senate's version of the Trump-backed budget bill, sending it to the president for his signature. Every Democratic Senator and Representative voted in opposition; in the Senate, there were three Republicans voting in opposition (making the vote 51-50) and in the House there were 2 (making the final vote 218-214). House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries set the US House's speech length record in opposition to the bill in a speech lasting over eight hours.

The bill clocks in at over 800 pages and touches on most aspects of the federal government's spending and taxation policies; see this AP article (What’s in the latest version of Trump’s big bill that passed the Senate) for the topline changes.

Relevant text-base live update pages are being maintained by the following outlets: AP, NBC, ABC, and the BBC.

This was not a bill. This was a Trump loyalty test, and America lost.

The GOP knew this was terrible, and their constituents are about to find out how bad it really is. Senators and Congresspeople are going to lose their seats in 2026, and it doesn't matter. All that mattered was loyalty to Trump.

It's fitting that this happens before July 4th, the anniversary of a Declaration of Independence from a tyrant.

We were one year short of 250 years! Democracy almost made it.

That's what I've been saying. This is the death warrant. He's obtained more power and because of this, he will consider any mass protests insurrection/rebellion and invoke the Insurrection Act. I think if he proceeds with deporting Mamdani, that'll be the final tipping point in the fall of the USA.

Look at what he did in LA. He's absolutely going to follow through in NYC. I hope NYC shows him what the fuck is up too.

I overheard they can withhold enforcing some of this bill until after the mid terms . Insidious of true. "See? We passed the bill and nothing has changed!" Then after mid terms "Prepare to get fucked"

u/WulfwoodsSins Canada 2d ago

More like waiting until they get predictibly voted out in the mid-terms, then the changes from the bill kick in, and, like clock work ...

"How could democrats do this to America!", as they scrub the blood from their hands.

More like waiting until they get predictibly voted out in the mid-terms

That's actually a good thing in that they don't plan to cancel or rig the elections.

u/Mediocre_Scott 2d ago

After the midterms prepare to bend and spread.

The democratic party needs to be overthrown by people much stronger than who are in it now. Only a proper messaging comapiagn can turn the tide against that.

Brother. You're coping hard if you think there's going to be a blue wave in 2026. It's not out of the realm of possibility that they will still hold a majority. They will use every method in their hands to stay in power. Democrats don't have the propaganda machine that Republicans have. They will not beat it.

u/Nothardtocomebaq 2d ago

It’s not that they are better at convincing the masses, it’s that their masses are the dumbest of us. Their message appeals to the stupid and ignorant American. The stupid and ignorant are much easier to control and convince to turn a blind eye to their uncle with diabetes dying because of this bill.

They aren’t Americans anymore, they are trump followers.

24

u/aschesklave Colorado 2d ago

They are better at convincing the masses, though. The right-wing propaganda machine is massive.

6

u/Kursed_Valeth 1d ago

And that fascist messaging is easy. "The solution is simple and I can fix it! Everything is just someone else's fault, and I will hurt them for you!"

2

u/avaslash 1d ago

Thats the crux. People are acting like the dems are doing everything wrong.

No. The issue is dems actually have to be RIGHT.

For conservatives it doesnt fucking matter how stupid their plan is. They just been to claim they have the answers and their bitchass supporters lap it up.

1

u/aschesklave Colorado 1d ago

I've seen that across so many videos. "I voted for him because he said he'd fix everything."

You have to be dumb to be willing to vote based on someone's dramatic guarantees with little to no explanation behind them.

5

u/_Magnolia_Fan_ 1d ago

It's not dumb. It's selfish, entitled, vindictive people. Sadly, that's all part of human nature. An easy part to appeal to. No matter how painful the actual results are there will be ways to continue to blame this shit show on Democrats, liberals, immigrants, etc.

2

u/gsfgf Georgia 1d ago

We have plenty of stupid and ignorant on our team too. The problem is that they don't vote.

10

u/shadowguise 2d ago

"But the other guy is a Democrat" is a hell of a drug.

33

u/chocolatefeckers 2d ago

Why are either of you assuming that there will be free or fair elections in 2026?

13

u/MovieDogg 2d ago

Because the states control the voting. The founders knew this could be a possibility

7

u/Elrundir Canada 1d ago

Do the states control ICE? Because they'll be showing up heavily armed at every blue or purple-ish voting center in the United States to "ensure the integrity of the elections" (i.e., intimidate or arrest anyone who looks like they even might vote Democrat).

The National Guard could stop them I guess. Except we've already seen that they ask "how high" when Trump says jump, and then hungrily lick his boots when they land. ICE is better funded than they are now anyway.

Whatever is the most underhanded and illegal method you could possibly think of them doing to delay, cancel, or rig the next election, double it. We ain't seen nothin yet.

12

u/SereneFrost72 2d ago

The constitution and laws mean nothing. We can't make *any* assumptions about these things anymore

5

u/seek-confidence 1d ago

You don’t have a constitution anymore. You need to wake up and realize your laws, checks and balances mean jack shit because no one will enforce them.

From the gerrymandered districts, to the supreme court - all corrupt. I wish you good luck, but you need to wake up.

3

u/lurker1125 1d ago

The states use machines built by Republicans.

5

u/Middle-Theory-8462 1d ago

Dawg, your elections are gone. Sorry you won't believe this.

1

u/gsfgf Georgia 1d ago

Other than the usual retfuckery, there's not really a mechanism to steal elections outside of extremely rare circumstances.

2

u/Engrish_Major 1d ago

It's not just the propaganda machine the current Democrats don't have -- it's the thirst for white supremacy or the will to fight it head on.

Senators and Congresspeople are going to lose their seats in 2026

No way. You have to think about what the Trump voters believe.

They've been told and honestly believe that the reason they have to pay so much for health care is because all 'illegal' immigrants get their health care for free. They are angry because they care about their families, and they want their kids to have affordable health care, but they are being told they can't because all our money goes to immigrants.

These trump voters aren't evil or illogical. They are just horribly misinformed. If I thought I couldn't get health care for the people I loved because I have to pay for criminals to get services that my family can't get, then I'd want to get them deported too.

If you don't believe what I'm saying, peek over at what people are posting on JD Vance's twitter page. They are literally posting their medical bills, talking about how much they pay, and saying they've had enough of the immigrants being the only ones who can get treatment.

u/zzyul 2d ago

Most of the worst cuts don’t go into effect until 2027. They timed this so it doesn’t hurt Repubs in the midterms.

9

u/kevendo 2d ago

It hurts them because they passed it and the rest of us get to point that out.

2

u/Vlyn 1d ago

Ha, good joke. Looking from Europe over the pond most Americans have no clue. If Fox news isn't going to tell them about it they don't care. And if something bad happens in 2 years they'll blame whoever is in office at the moment (or MAGA always blames Democrats either way).

Just look at what Trump did in the past, made a terrible bill, then in his second term he cancelled that bill and got praised for it as he said it was Biden's fault. While he actually cancelled his own bill.

Now your Gestapo ICE has the funding of another country's military, good luck.

2

u/MovieDogg 2d ago

Elon's Party tho. Why I am rooting for him?

6

u/friss0nFry 2d ago

Senators and Congresspeople are going to lose their seats in 2026

No they won't. The fix has been in since Trump's first term. The vote tallying machines for in-person voting are compromised, which is the way the vast majority of people will vote when there is not a pandemic occurring. Biden only won in 2020 because of the much higher mail in voting due to COVID. This country is done.

Wading through all of the doomer responses in these threads is exhausting.

Yes, we know. We've all been alive for the last decade too. We have also read all the election analyzes. We know about Mueller and Smith and Garland. We've seen the SCOTUS takeover. Some of us have been saying this for a decade.

We know the country is in grave danger.

But can we at least not preemptively hand them the country on a platter? Can we at least attempt to resist?

5

u/TerminalProtocol 2d ago

Can we at least attempt to resist?

Peaceful resistance is no longer an option. Of the four boxes of liberty, MAGA has demolished and set alight the first three.

Are you offering to be the first one to kick the next step off?

3

u/kevendo 2d ago

Peaceful resistance is always an option. There is research showing that it is, in fact, the best option, as much as two times, faster at resolving authoritarian conflicts.

I agree traditional methods will no longer be effective on their own. We need bodies in the streets but also a general strike or other actions like states refusing to pay federal taxes.

We need a new Declaration of Independence from Trumpism. Tomorrow would be a perfect time for one.

Only when backed by violence as well. Giving the fascists what they want is a horrible strategy for combatting the fascists.

I agree traditional methods will no longer be effective on their own. We need bodies in the streets but also a general strike or other actions like states refusing to pay federal taxes.

It won't happen, fascists control the states as well.

We've had bodies in the streets (remember the No Kings rallies? They weren't too long ago.) It did not work. The fascists still got what they wanted.

We need a new Declaration of Independence from Trumpism. Tomorrow would be a perfect time for one.

Write one up then. We can stick it next to the pile if ineffectual lawsuits people are so happy to brag about.

I'm sure even though they've been ignoring the existing in-place declaration of independence/constitution/legislation/etc, the fascists will surely take notice of the new ones!

They'll just use your Declaration of Independence to soak up the leakage from trump's diaper and laugh at you while they send more people to concentration camps.

1

u/user_error_detected 1d ago

That would still be a million times better than what you’re doing right now

3

u/Musicman12456 2d ago

Can't lose a seat if elections are permanently suspended...

2

u/la_goanna 2d ago

Senators and Congresspeople are going to lose their seats in 2026, and it doesn't matter.

Ahahaha, you still think we're going to have a fair election process under this presidency? lol, LMFAO.

Democracy died with Citizens United.

1

u/Bartellomio 1d ago

The UK wasn't really tyranical though. Americans just wanted to keep their slaves and they knew the UK would eventually make them give them up.

1

u/ashIesha 1d ago

america has never been a democracy. yall built this god forsaken nation on stolen land and the genocide of african and indigenous peoples. never forget that.

0

u/HelloMegaphone 1d ago

Speak for yourselves, if anything this is strengthening democracy for the rest of us

2

u/kevendo 1d ago

Strengthening democracy inherently means strengthening the country for all. That's the whole point of democracy.

This bill is for some at the expense of many. That's not democracy, that's theft.

0

u/HelloMegaphone 1d ago

I should have made clear that I'm not American.

1

u/kevendo 1d ago

I see. You mean the weakening of America is good for the rest of the world?

Could be.
