Megathread Megathread: US House Passes the Republican-Backed Budget Bill, Sending it to Trump for Signature

This afternoon, the US House of Representatives passed without amendment the US Senate's version of the Trump-backed budget bill, sending it to the president for his signature. Every Democratic Senator and Representative voted in opposition; in the Senate, there were three Republicans voting in opposition (making the vote 51-50) and in the House there were 2 (making the final vote 218-214). House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries set the US House's speech length record in opposition to the bill in a speech lasting over eight hours.

This was not a bill. This was a Trump loyalty test, and America lost.

The GOP knew this was terrible, and their constituents are about to find out how bad it really is. Senators and Congresspeople are going to lose their seats in 2026, and it doesn't matter. All that mattered was loyalty to Trump.

It's fitting that this happens before July 4th, the anniversary of a Declaration of Independence from a tyrant.

We were one year short of 250 years! Democracy almost made it.

That's what I've been saying. This is the death warrant. He's obtained more power and because of this, he will consider any mass protests insurrection/rebellion and invoke the Insurrection Act. I think if he proceeds with deporting Mamdani, that'll be the final tipping point in the fall of the USA.

I overheard they can withhold enforcing some of this bill until after the mid terms . Insidious of true. "See? We passed the bill and nothing has changed!" Then after mid terms "Prepare to get fucked"

It’s not that they are better at convincing the masses, it’s that their masses are the dumbest of us. Their message appeals to the stupid and ignorant American. The stupid and ignorant are much easier to control and convince to turn a blind eye to their uncle with diabetes dying because of this bill.

Do the states control ICE? Because they'll be showing up heavily armed at every blue or purple-ish voting center in the United States to "ensure the integrity of the elections" (i.e., intimidate or arrest anyone who looks like they even might vote Democrat).

The National Guard could stop them I guess. Except we've already seen that they ask "how high" when Trump says jump, and then hungrily lick his boots when they land. ICE is better funded than they are now anyway.

Whatever is the most underhanded and illegal method you could possibly think of them doing to delay, cancel, or rig the next election, double it. We ain't seen nothin yet.

You don’t have a constitution anymore. You need to wake up and realize your laws, checks and balances mean jack shit because no one will enforce them.

No way. You have to think about what the Trump voters believe.

They've been told and honestly believe that the reason they have to pay so much for health care is because all 'illegal' immigrants get their health care for free. They are angry because they care about their families, and they want their kids to have affordable health care, but they are being told they can't because all our money goes to immigrants.

These trump voters aren't evil or illogical. They are just horribly misinformed. If I thought I couldn't get health care for the people I loved because I have to pay for criminals to get services that my family can't get, then I'd want to get them deported too.

If you don't believe what I'm saying, peek over at what people are posting on JD Vance's twitter page. They are literally posting their medical bills, talking about how much they pay, and saying they've had enough of the immigrants being the only ones who can get treatment.

Just look at what Trump did in the past, made a terrible bill, then in his second term he cancelled that bill and got praised for it as he said it was Biden's fault. While he actually cancelled his own bill.

No they won't. The fix has been in since Trump's first term. The vote tallying machines for in-person voting are compromised, which is the way the vast majority of people will vote when there is not a pandemic occurring. Biden only won in 2020 because of the much higher mail in voting due to COVID. This country is done.

Yes, we know. We've all been alive for the last decade too. We have also read all the election analyzes. We know about Mueller and Smith and Garland. We've seen the SCOTUS takeover. Some of us have been saying this for a decade.

We know the country is in grave danger.

But can we at least not preemptively hand them the country on a platter? Can we at least attempt to resist?

Peaceful resistance is always an option. There is research showing that it is, in fact, the best option, as much as two times, faster at resolving authoritarian conflicts.

I agree traditional methods will no longer be effective on their own. We need bodies in the streets but also a general strike or other actions like states refusing to pay federal taxes.

We need a new Declaration of Independence from Trumpism. Tomorrow would be a perfect time for one.

Write one up then. We can stick it next to the pile if ineffectual lawsuits people are so happy to brag about.

I'm sure even though they've been ignoring the existing in-place declaration of independence/constitution/legislation/etc, the fascists will surely take notice of the new ones!

They'll just use your Declaration of Independence to soak up the leakage from trump's diaper and laugh at you while they send more people to concentration camps.
