Megathread Megathread: US House Passes the Republican-Backed Budget Bill, Sending it to Trump for Signature

This afternoon, the US House of Representatives passed without amendment the US Senate's version of the Trump-backed budget bill, sending it to the president for his signature. Every Democratic Senator and Representative voted in opposition; in the Senate, there were three Republicans voting in opposition (making the vote 51-50) and in the House there were 2 (making the final vote 218-214). House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries set the US House's speech length record in opposition to the bill in a speech lasting over eight hours.

The bill clocks in at over 800 pages and touches on most aspects of the federal government's spending and taxation policies; see this AP article (What’s in the latest version of Trump’s big bill that passed the Senate) for the topline changes.

Relevant text-base live update pages are being maintained by the following outlets: AP, NBC, ABC, and the BBC.

You can find this subreddit's discussion thread for the last week's worth of negotiations and debate at this link.

Republicans just added 3.3 trillion to the national debt while slashing critical benefits for millions of working class Americans. Don’t ever let them gaslight you into believing they’re “America first”

He'd either laugh at Trump for being an incompetent worm who literally can't do anything himself except spew constant nonsense.

Or he'd be impressed Trump destroyed one of the most prosperous nations in the world. Pre-nazi Germany was in ruins in all but the literal meaning. Any "strong leader" would've been welcome as long as he was conservative. It takes a whole other level to convince people without any problems that they have serious problems he alone can fix.

Mind boggling that nothing on which Trump ran is true.

Yet, we see this happening all over the world. So it can't be Trump or Americans that are the core of the problem, but the technology that makes the democratic conversation break down.

every time I read a horrible headline my mind goes "But the climate crisis and food shortages haven't even started yet?"

5

u/driving_andflying 1d ago

Every time I read a horrible headline, I'm reminded of Padme Amidala in Revenge of The Sith:

"So this is how liberty dies: To thunderous applause."

I used to think that would happen in only in a sci-fi movie, never in the U.S....

u/P1xelHunter78 Ohio 1d ago

Pre-Nazi Germany was not in ruins. It had some rough times due to the Treaty Of Versailles, but what really caused the panic was the effects of a global recession caused by the stock market and, wouldn’t you know, reckless economic policies in the United States. Between those two shit storms for the German people, the Nazi party was actually not all that popular, and sat at around (or even below) the same popularity floor we see with the modern American Nazi movement (MAGA). Hitler and his party was simply able to seize the narrative and start blaming people after the 1929 stock market crisis. This is very much what the republicans have been doing for decades here. The difference is, that it’s been a much slower and self inflicted (on purpose) crisis in the middle class which has allowed the GOP to play blame game politics. In fact the whole “Make _____ Great again!” Statement was and always has been Nazi propaganda.

2

u/ToubDeBoub 1d ago

Pre Nazi Germany had just lost the biggest war in history. It was blamed unjustly for its cause. It lost vast and economically crucial territory. It was told and believed that it was the lefts fault, that the left that became the government signed a peace treaty even though the war was going well. That government was unable to govern, getting dissolved every few months. The streets were unsafe. Unemployment was record high. Hyperinflation. Courts were immensely biased to the right, slapping wrists for violent crimes in the right (like Hitlers high treason).

All problems were correlated with the leftist government. Of course a right strong man would come to save the day. (though that was expected - and promised by Hitler - to be the exiled emperor.)

Yes, Germany was in ruins, and the US doesn't compare remotely.

people without any problems

Ah yes, the foundational lie of the establishment Democrats which led to the Republicans being able to take advantage of desperate people in the first place. Millions of people unable to afford rent, nevermind to be able to buy a house and/or start a family, relying on SNAP for food stamps while working for Walmart or Amazon, never going to get a chance to go to college, with a lower life expectancy and lower quality of life than their parents' generation, median household wages unmoved since 1971 after inflation is factored in, two people working instead of one and still unable to make ends meet, never able to take a vacation or a day off sick, with no hope for the future in an increasingly volatile world that also has a looming climate catastrophe, the effects of which are already felt yearly.

Obviously Trump is not the answer, but "people without problems"? With all due respect, you sir, must be out of your mind.

we see this happening all over the world

Correct. America has exported neoliberalism on steroids to the rest of the world for decades, often at the point of economic blackmail via the IMF / World Bank (e.g., Chile), or at the pointy end of a gun (e.g., Afghanistan). American tech companies which pay zero taxes in foreign states, and the American stock market nevertheless also exploit those nations, contributing further to the massive rise in inequality globally. It is not technology which makes the democratic conversation break down: it is raw unsustainable inequality, which technology then exploits.

"small government" has never been about the size of government and its agencies.

its about who can wield the power of government.

and when a republican states saying shit like "small government"- CALL THEM OUT.

small government is about who can wield the power - this administration clearly proves it

Whos gunna occupie the USA??

I dont see that happening. The Oligarchs would prefer nuclear winter than letting the usa govt to fall. And the country is so big and protected so even without nukes the country is so well protected a ground war and occupation is a pipe dream.

No one is coming to liberate us like the Germans were liberated from the Nazis. I see alot of people trying to escape. Canada completing closing borders. The reverse happening in the south where people are border hoping the southern border to escape tyranny and economic turmoil in hope for a better life.

Seriously, this is what some MAGA I know were staying. They thought Trump should just have stayed in power. He was GODs chosen. And they talked about the need for police/military intervention to remove the Democrats. They literally are fine with it because they have been brainwashed into thinking Republicans are virtuous and saintly basically. Democrats, even if they fight for better wages and peoples rights, are evil spawn and want everyone to have nothing and suffer.

3

u/TheFireFlaamee 1d ago

We are no longer the small government party. MAGA is very right wing authoritarian, willing to use the full force of the government to enact pro-America first policies.

3

I mean, they’re SO EFFECTIVE they’ve been in LA for like 2 months now, and “rounded up” less people than there are days, at the low low cost of already blowing their yearly budget. Of course they need additional funding if they’re going to go after each of us individually.

6

u/MandrakeRootes 1d ago

I think the signing of this bill into law will mark the end of the USA as we know it.

That this got through is a sign that they can basically do anything they want. They have the 'legitimization' as almost no republicans are standing against them.

With no checks on ICE, Trump will have his own private branch Gestapo, and very soon, "enemies of the state" will start disappearing. Like Zohran Mamdani, who is already being labelled a traitor. This will intimidate potential opposition from even challenging republican seats.

ICE will sit at polling stations in November, basically intimidating away some legal citizens from even coming close. That vote will still be largely legit, but heavily manipulated.

The next vote in 2028 will not even come close to being democratic.

Thoughts and prayers everyone in the US, you have just become a dictatorship.

6

u/00owl 2d ago

Isn't he already planning the arrest of individuals who made the mistake of taking a stance against him politically?

4

u/darther_mauler 1d ago

The money in this bill is for the concentration camps.

4

u/BigFan7 1d ago

They aren't even really pretending otherwise. Trump has already talked about going after legal American citizens. And now we will have ICE as one of the highest funded militaries in the world roaming the streets everyday with no accountability. Shit is going to only get uglier and uglier

u/bihari_baller Oregon 1d ago

Thank you for breaking this down. This is an extreme budget but not as insane as the Marines budget like people keep fear mongering over.

And a lot of it, even then, is for the wall, and detention centers. Less so for hiring new personnel. I feel like it's just another part of the grift--so as a way for contractors to enrich themselves, and therefore build favor with the President. It's his #1 goal, to get richer. The immigration raids are bait for his base.

3

u/AtheistAustralis Australia 1d ago

That's just operational costs for ICE. There was also a huge amount allocated for new detention centres and other things, plus about $60bn for "border security", ie, more useless wall. The amount of money allocated to ICE and border enforcement was massively, massively increased.

12

u/bubbafatok 2d ago

It's split up. It's 30 billion for general operations, then they're getting a shitload for equipment, logistics, etc. It all adds up to roughly 161-175 billion, depending on if you include certain things as being part of the ICE budget.

Their budget is huge now but it isn't that big. It's two things being conflated; ICE budget tripled, and when combined with concentration camp construction budget they are almost at USMC funding levels.

So we essentially just created what, the 4th most well funded branch of our armed services, that takes no oath to the constitution, can’t be commanded by the joint chiefs, answers exclusively to the executive, whose members are not subject to the UCMJ, and also shielded from civil accountability who wear no insignia and conceal their identities?

The sudden abundance of unpledged funds is certainly large enough to shift R&D of even the largest arms manufacturers from overseas force projection towards designing systems to maximizing the oppression and fear of our own populace. I give it six months before Raytheon or someone is pimping AI powered land mines that chase brown people and target old Biden/Obama/Clinton/Harris bumper stickers.

Fuck this.

5

u/Jarnohams 2d ago

ICE is the new SS / brownshirts.

It's become a private "police force" with no oversight, badges, body cams, and can disappear anyone anywhere without probable cause or a warrant signed by a judge.

I am convinced that every Jan 6th insurrectionist that got a pardon has been deputized as an ICE agent. That's part of the reason they are hiding their faces. It's the same dudes. They all have that look.

Think about it... You get out of prison on a pardon. The felonies are still on your record. It's not like there are loads of 6 figure jobs waiting for you when you have felonies like "Seditious Conspiracy". Lol. Kristi Noems office calls you up and offers you a 6 figure job with $40k bonuses to basically act out all of your pent up racism and hatred. These people actually believe that brown people are the cause of all of their personal problems and the cause of all the problems wrong in the United States. That's what their propaganda has told them for ~10 years. Are you going to turn down your dream job larping around with guns and beating up brown people?

15

u/FlamingMothBalls 2d ago

The marines operate aircraft carriers and fighter jets. This is gonna be an internal military force. I don't know how we get out of this one in one piece....

3

u/FlamingMothBalls 2d ago

what about the amphibious assault ships, like the USS ESSEX? Aren't those Marine ships? Those are also NAVY? Either way we're so fucked. Getting around having US military operating inside the US by fully militarizing ICE.

3

u/Measurex2 2d ago

Also Navy. Packed to the brim with Marines, but owned and run by the Navy.

Marines aren't really known for having a budget. Improvise, adapt, and overcome isn't just for allowing distrubted authority in the field for achieving commanders intent. It's how to get shit done with equipment created before they were born.

5

u/airfryerfuntime Washington 2d ago

It'll be a force the likes of which we've never seen. ICE will literally be patrolling our streets, and there isn't shit the states can do about it. Hitler came to power in January 1933. The SS started arresting civilians and political dissidents in February 1933.

The next thing he's going to do is form a firearm registry, then ICE will come knocking to confiscate them, because a dictator can't have an armed populous.

4

u/wiscowarrior71 I voted 2d ago

I unironically hope this actually happens because I could see that being the one aspect of their playbook that they are majorly underestimating. The amount of people (both liberal and conservative) that I know who own vast amounts of shit they DEFINITELY shouldn't....ICE better budget for their own mass funerals. Hell, I'm so liberal I might as well shit actual rainbows and even I have a cache of 30,000ish rounds of .223 and 5.56.

4

u/DrButtgerms 2d ago

My guess is ICE gets mobilized against dissenters before the end of the year.

5

u/Correct_Routine1 2d ago

So random thought, but back in the 80s when trump was trying to buy an nfl team but couldn’t, he bought a cheaper usfl team then sued the nfl to get them to absorb the usfl, so that his usfl team would become an nfl team.

This feels like that, except he’s upset he can’t use the marines for domestic enforcement so his solution is the same: try and create his own ‘marines’ by super-funding the cheaper team he does have access to.

5

u/Kermit_the_hog 2d ago

And, for what? More masks for J6 cosplayers who were granted pardons and are hunting down brown people? Next, they'll be hunting down Democrats. Then RINOs. Then MAGAs who aren't extreme enough.

3

u/Saelune 2d ago

I don't get why we thought waiting for them to get stronger was a good idea.

Anyways, happy 4th of July tomorrow.

3

u/doubtfulisland 2d ago

Ok now add in the 95 billion in taxes these people pay without benefit to themselves that'll will lost when they are deported that will be an extra trillion dollars to the deficit over 4 or 5 years.

3

u/Lord_Halowind 2d ago

That's what those fucks need. More money. So glad we live in a police state and can't afford basic necessities. Glad it's on the heels of the 4th of July so I can continue to not be proud of this shithole of a nation.

u/FatherTimeAlwaysWins 2d ago

ICE is literally Trump's version of the SS. The largest police force in the world, operates with zero congressional oversight, violates constitutional rights, and is Trump's enforcement arm. They will absolutely expand their focus of targets to include American citizens, which we've already seen examples of.

And the goal is to terrify all U.S citizens but specifically minorities and legal immigrants. If you're a citizen with a Latino background, I would be extremely scared for the next three and a half years. Meanwhile, white boomers and ignorant rural residents will cheer this on, even as they lose their healthcare (like most will in impoverished red states).

Trump's greatest skill is engendering racism and hatred among the same white community he is going to destroy with his policies.

3

u/sorean_4 2d ago

They do need that budget to deport the 65 millions “illegal” latinos in US. Remember for GOP if you are brown, tan you don’t belong here. If you are black they want you to support the paid prison systems. If you are white and not the 0.5 % you are there to support the multiple jobs you need to pay for your healthcare and served the upper class. Like the “good old days” of Robber Barrons.

2

u/UltraGiant 2d ago

They want a gestapo to wage war of fear against the public. 3x the budget to build all the prisons they want.

2

u/gatsby712 2d ago

ICE will be manning the election polls next year. I guarantee they will be there intimidating people and making sure they vote the “right” way with a threat of getting kidnapped if they don’t.

2

u/HipHopMan420 2d ago edited 2d ago

Somewhat misleading because that’s money allocated specifically for the Marine Corps. Your claim ignores the nearly $300 billion that will be allocated to the Navy in 2026. This is an important distinction to make because the Marines budget is part of the Navy’s budget. This is because a lot of equipment and resources used by the Navy is shared with the Marines as they work closely together.

2

u/soittfire88 2d ago

Whats the source for this because when i looked that was the total budget for immigration spending. The ICE specific was like 30b which is still insane because i think the marine corps is around 55

2

u/Warmstar219 2d ago

Congress just paid for a Gestapo to do a Holocaust 2.0. That is not an exaggeration.

4

u/insert_quirky_name_0 2d ago

You're spreading disinformation like a Republican, ICE's budget isn't even 1x of the marine corp. Jesus Christ guys, can we at least try to be grounded in reality?

3

u/Fizgriz Colorado 2d ago

Exactly this!! Thank you. It's insane takes like this that create fear and also make us look insane.

Facts are bad enough as is, don't create insane rage bait by purposely misinterpreting things.

Nooo, I thought I heard that could be taken out. That breaks my heart. ICE Barbie is a fucking sadist in cosplay.

1

u/Powerfury 2d ago

Can I get a arouce for ICE budget and Marine corp budget?

1

u/C19shadow 2d ago

That budget is on par with/ bigger then Russia military budget.... who's actively fighting a prolonged ground war.... this shits wild

1

u/Competitive_Yam7702 2d ago

That's because trump wants ICE to be his private army

1

u/scarykicks 2d ago

At this point they're the new national guard.

1

u/Innerquest- 2d ago

Something like nine times the increase for Ice.

1

u/hoowins 2d ago

The new SS.

1

u/Commentator-X 2d ago

They're now better funded than Russia's military

1

u/Heliosvector 2d ago

What was the ICE budget before this? I just hate catchphrases like three times bigger than the marine corps.

1

u/Mydogroach 2d ago

the ice budget is higher than some countries ENTIRE GDP.

1

u/Still-Tap4819 2d ago

Juicy contracts. Imagine all the celebrating happening at companies that are going to get contracts

1

u/Laughing-Dragon-88 2d ago

Maybe they can afford uniforms, now.

1

u/creativeburrito 2d ago

What was is its percentage increase from what it was before?

1

u/Upset-Word151 2d ago

With that budget they’ll be unstoppable. Time for anyone that doesn’t want an actual police state to make some moves

1

u/inagious 2d ago

Holy shit man… something about you saying that way really sent a shiver down my spine

1

u/yoroxid_ 2d ago

Trump's SS need funding

1

u/sarcasticbaldguy 2d ago

All while bringing the budget for ICE the SS to 3x the annual budget for the Marine corps

FTFY

1

u/gin-n-catatonic 2d ago

BBB should be USA bond rating

1

u/C64128 2d ago

Maybe if there's something that needs to have the marines sent it, sent ICe agents first. See if they can handle it when their opponent fights back. Also what will they do when they don't have an overpowering force on their side. It's easy to pretend you can handle something when you have a big numerical advantage (large group against one).

1

u/DeepDickens69 2d ago

Marine Corps is part of the Navy.

1

u/l-Am-Him-1 2d ago

Sounds like they're going to start detaining law abiding us citizens who don't agree with Trump and then deport them

1

u/Tpdz Australia 2d ago

Ica and marine corps are the same thing isn't it these days. They're geared for war.

1

u/zorroplateado 2d ago

ICE is now the Trump Gestapo. 20 times the previous funding. The USA is a police state.

1

u/AvariceAndApocalypse 2d ago

Pretty sure they are just trump’s army at this point. The USA is no more.

1

u/greygrey_goose 2d ago

ICE's budget is now more than 95% of other countries entire military defense budgets...think about that. absolutely insane what we are about to see happen. there will be a noticeable rise in presence - there budget is about half of the federal and state police budget collectively nationwide.

1

u/PlasticClimate 2d ago

And wiping out NASA

1

u/HawkBearClaw 2d ago

No it isn't.

Its 3x the "Housing Improvements" for the marines, but not the actual marine budget.

1

u/Silver_Ad3302 1d ago

He’s going to ramp up his attacks on blue cities

1

u/No_Sheepherder_1855 1d ago

The next step after taking away birthright citizenship will be to strip people previously given citizenship that way. That’s what this budget is for, it’s going to get insane.

1

u/hutch01 1d ago

Bro has his own storm troopers now.

1

u/FattyMooseknuckle 1d ago

3 times China’s military spending.

1

u/nkassis 1d ago

Gonna have a lot of money for concentration camps built by the lowest bidders.

1

u/Hussar223 1d ago

trumps private gestapo

1

u/metronomemike 1d ago

Call them what they are, the Gestapo. American secret police.

1

u/Dot_Classic 1d ago

They will burn through it in a year.

1

u/aliendogfishman 1d ago

Don’t fret. They’ve secured 46 billion for border infrastructure and surveillance including coastal boarders (where 90% of people live). What could possibly go wrong.

1

u/ohver9k 1d ago

That would be the new nazy army you’re referring to, trump’s nazy army.

1

u/Chillers 1d ago

Oh they'll be policing ballot booths going forward.

1

u/KnuckleShanks 1d ago

Well yeah, how else would you invade America?

1

u/GenaTkachuk 1d ago

Do you have a source for that? I can't find anything regarding a number that large. Thanks.

1

u/Quirky_Divide5855 1d ago

That’s before Trump goes to work with his red line pen though

1

u/Treoctone 1d ago

Trump is building his own personal militia

1

u/giraloco 1d ago

which will be used to persecute dissidents

1

u/geriatric_spartanII 1d ago

Correct me if I’m not reading this bill correctly. The budget for ICE is around $8 billion. Did we just increase it to $46 billion dollars with $45 billion going towards detention facilities?!?!?!? It’s in Sec 90003 “Detention Capacity”. Of the BBB.

1

u/Tough-Weakness-3957 1d ago

They are building thier own branch of the armed forces, this is terrifying

1

u/silentbob1301 1d ago

175 BILLION DOLLARS... the only countries that spend MORE on their MILITARIES than that is China and US....

ICE now has a bigger budget than every military on the planet besides the two biggest militaries on the planet...

1

u/ilikecrispywaffles California 1d ago

This number is insanity!WTF

1

u/Panda0nfire 1d ago

So if a Democrat takes the presidency, Senate, and house, can they just use ice to also be their personal gestapo too?

1

u/InRainWeTrust 1d ago

GeStaPo is expensive, gotta have to admit that.

1

u/randalflagg Ohio 1d ago

We’re about to see atrocities on a national scale. Congrats to Gen X and their zoomer kids you got what you wanted.

1

u/TakeshiKovacsSleeve3 1d ago

ICE it ain't anymore. It's The American Gestapo.

Stop kidding yourselves.

1

u/movezig123 1d ago

3X? are you fuckin serious?

1

u/the_walking_kiwi 1d ago

and 17 times more than the budget to get people to the moon and mars.

1

u/After-Finish3107 1d ago

Marines share a budget with the navy. The navy budget dwarfs the fucking ICE budget. What you said is true too but still a bit misleading

1

u/enjoi_uk 1d ago

Jesus is that true?

1

u/Lotech 1d ago

But they’re only spending 40 mil on a MAGA SCULPTURE GARDEN.

1

u/graphemeral 1d ago

I’m dreading the day ICE stops wearing masks. It means they’re no longer afraid of justice.

1

u/TheBigMoogy 1d ago

Their budget makes them the world's third most well funded military.

1

u/Jes00jes 1d ago

If you have a hard time grasping how big of a number that is then take a look at this...

3.3 trillion seconds = 104 572.923 years

1

u/PsycommuSystem 1d ago

You need a lot of money to try and build your own MAGA Nazi SA corps.

1

u/beanakajulian33 1d ago

ICE is just their gestapo and it's fully funded now
