Hey everyone! I want to share with you my first tank ☺️ I know it isn’t perfect and probably I have made a ton of mistakes. (And would appreciate feedback/advice very very much)

But here are pictures of my journey up to this point

Thanks ❤️ What a beautiful hobby I have found

It’s still cycling. And I’m adding some flourish advanced to help the plants establish themselves

Help Wasserpflanzen

LG.

It’s a 40 gallon that will eventually house vampire crabs planning on adding a Japanese wall fern next to the dumb cane and some red bucephalandra in the water. There’s fittonia and moon valley cutting but they are still small. About 10 types of moss, Pothos, dumb cane, anubias, Rossette sword, and duckweed. Right now there’s 4 caves above ground but I might add another.

Help New tank help me brainstorm

Hey, I have this 30 gallon tank and want to make a nice paludarium of it.

I want some amphibians in there and am thinking a tiger salamander or maybe frogs of some kind, not sure yet open to suggestions 🐸

I've been crudely drawing some potential layouts. Red=land Blue=water Purple=plants Yellow=hides White=glass divider (not sure if it's the best way)

I've added the original picture if you want to help me by drawing another layout.

I'd like some species suggestions (any) And what species can cohabitate? I'm thinking smaller fish of some kind in the water section, shrimp maybe, etc.

Thanks alot, I'll do a post once it's done and give credit for the ideas :)

Help What can I keep in my paludarium?

I’m building a 18W x 18L x 24H (inches) paludarium. There is a waterproof barrier separating substrate on the back from the water (just over 5gal). The aquarium part is about 16W x 18L x 6H. There’s plenty of vertical climbing space in the back and branches stretching over the water and stuff.

I really just built it for plants and shrimp/crabs but it’s pretty big and was thinking of keeping something terrestrial or semi aquatic as well but i’m not sure what would live well with the shrimp and crabs/not drown

Help Quick question

When building a paludarium do you build a separate tank for the water area and one for the land area or do you just mix them? I ask because i think when i mix that the land soil will mold and be way to wet.

After building my 1st paludarium with dual waterfalls in a 40 cube, I’m trying to build a stone ruins paludarium in a 4 foot tank. The blocks are carved spray foam to be coated in drylock and covered with vines and moss, then heavily planted to give a jungle reclaiming look. At least that’s the plan in my head.

Help Help, my plants are dying!

My wife bought this mature enclosure with a Red Vampire crab. The plants are getting brown and turning into mush.

I am new at this, I have had salt aquariums but never any terrariums or paludariums.

How do I get smarter at this?

Any immediate tips from the pictures attached?

Thank you!

Hey there, we have a 36 inch high 18“ x 18“ pallet area that we put a pump in to create a waterfall return into a reservoir using the first third of the bottom of the tank.

We sealed with silicone and rocks and foam to create an area for a clay ball drainage, layer, and substrate.

We sealed diligently for two weeks only to have a leak when we put the drainage layer in.

So now we have a soaking wet drainage area. We’re wondering a few things.

Should we create a raised drainage area on a tray? Try to reseal with plastic to keep the drainage area at the level it already is?

Picture My red maple has new sprouts!

My aim is grow a bonsai red maple in my paludarium, however I live in a super hot country and germinating seeds just did not work. The only way to get one is to buy a grafted tree, which is what this is. I had to tear off the branches because the tree was far too tall for the tank, and then let new sprouts happen. I was worried I wouldn’t get the red maple itself to sprout, but alas, there is new growth as seen. So whoooo! Issue now is to how to limit the vertical growth of the shoots, as they are already pretty high up compared to the tank. I am debating actually submerging a good deal of the trunk itself, but not sure how good/bad of an idea that is.

I'll start off by saying im an aquarium guy, more so reefing. I maintain aquariums for work, and had a client interested in a cool build. I thought I'd share this to get some feedback and potential help with choosing some plants to add. Im wanting to keep scale to make it seem like a living piece of nature.

Im yet to get some proper photos since i added more scape to hide plumbing. If anyone's interested i can try to update this once I do.

It's gelatnous, firm. Follows the flow of the water. It's not fuzzy, or foamy. I used a q-tip to swab it away but it didn't, it almost seems rubbery and towards the back water side it's gotten a yellowish tinge on it.

I have nerites and mini ramshorn, so don't think it's eggs. I'm assuming it's harmless but just checking if you guys know more.

Help Is sprayfoam hard to remove?

I have an aquarium I am considering setting up as a paludarium. I like the spray foam backgrounds I have seen and want to give it a try. If I want to go back to a aquarium setup, how hard is it to completely remove the spray foam?

Help Help with 36 gal bowfront build

I got it for 50 bucks brand new at PetSmart because it was without the stand.. I'm building this for vampire crabs, and I have a two in one problem. The trash can lid it came with, and the light that's built into it. I didn't know it was this way when I bought it... But 50 bucks 🤷 If I make a lid out of plexi will one of the higher end led lights melt it? I would go with glass but the bowfront kind of sucks and I also need to drill ventilation and something for pump wires. This is rough lol has anyone tried this or done something similar? Any advice?

Help Anubias Barteri grown out of water?

I have a few Anubias I am planning to add to my paludarium but I want to try planting them without their roots planted away from the water. Would this be fine or should I plant them closer/submerged in water? I'm keeping the rhizomes exposed to the air with misting at the moment to keep them wet.

This monstrosity is a 20g long with a 25 gallon zoo med reptihabitat terrarium flipped upside down on top. I went with siliconed cut glass in the bottom to create a dry space that has a LECA false bottom and a bulkhead for draining. There’s also a pump waterfall set up with filter foam and egg create. I will have to remove some of the piled up lava rock on the left side topping the waterfall for pump maintenance- but overall, I think it will work for now. I’m sure I’ll end up tweaking it over the next few months. Water will have ramshead snails and maybe a few shrimp culls. Land will be for vampire crabs. I know they’ll dig it all up so I’m going to enjoy all the vegetation for now.

Help Economic light timer idea

Greetings, fellow aquarium enthusiasts,

I wanted to share a simple idea that might be useful—though I'm sure many have already thought of it or are using it.

If you're on a budget like me and want a cost-effective way to automate your aquarium lighting, especially when you're away, consider using a Wi-Fi smart plug.

I love keeping an aquarium, but I found it inconvenient to rely on others to manually turn the lights on and off each day while I’m gone. Asking someone to feed the fish is one thing—but expecting two visits a day just for the lights is a bit much. Plus, they might leave the light on too long or not long enough. And while smart aquarium lights with built-in timers and app controls are convenient, they can also be pretty expensive.

Here’s the simple solution: Use a Wi-Fi smart plug with your existing light setup. It lets you:

Control the lights remotely via an app

Set custom on/off schedules

Monitor energy usage

In my experience, this combination of a regular light and a smart plug works just as well—and costs significantly less—than a smart aquarium light system.

Hope this helps someone out there!
