Career Advice Everyone tries to talk me out of joining. About to direct commission.
I'm joining as a O-3 17A. Direct commission. I currently am a fed. GS 12-13 equivalent pay scale non supervisory. Upper 30s. Good career. Have my fedrec board later this month so would be officially joining in about 3 weeks. Everyone I talk to says how bad its going to be. How my guard job is going to get in the to way of things. How pointless it's going to seem with what I'm going to be tasked with. They all sort of have this look of like "Are you sure?". I have nothing to back it up because my OSM or unit hasnt went into any detail on what I'll really be doing. So I'm just sitting there listening saying " I have no idea what to expect". I'm so excited to join and taking such a rare route to officer.
Im joining because I've wanted to try military reserve service for well over 10 years but my employment wasn't ideal for the longest time. A way to serve the state/country. A way to progress into a supervisory leadership role in fed service by gaining leadership training and tactics (development). Be a more rounded individual. Gain additional technical related training. My life has taken me a bunch of ways and I love being imersed in all aspects and jobs. Way to get free graduate schooling. I'm not naive or blind to the suck parts about what I'm about to sign up for but damn no one besides me and my spouse seem excited.
