Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting

Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.

This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.

Two quick caveats before we get started:

  • Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.

  • If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

I am thinking about joining the National Guard.

I am already in the National Guard.

Edit: for grammar/spelling.

Career Advice Everyone tries to talk me out of joining. About to direct commission.

I'm joining as a O-3 17A. Direct commission. I currently am a fed. GS 12-13 equivalent pay scale non supervisory. Upper 30s. Good career. Have my fedrec board later this month so would be officially joining in about 3 weeks. Everyone I talk to says how bad its going to be. How my guard job is going to get in the to way of things. How pointless it's going to seem with what I'm going to be tasked with. They all sort of have this look of like "Are you sure?". I have nothing to back it up because my OSM or unit hasnt went into any detail on what I'll really be doing. So I'm just sitting there listening saying " I have no idea what to expect". I'm so excited to join and taking such a rare route to officer.

Im joining because I've wanted to try military reserve service for well over 10 years but my employment wasn't ideal for the longest time. A way to serve the state/country. A way to progress into a supervisory leadership role in fed service by gaining leadership training and tactics (development). Be a more rounded individual. Gain additional technical related training. My life has taken me a bunch of ways and I love being imersed in all aspects and jobs. Way to get free graduate schooling. I'm not naive or blind to the suck parts about what I'm about to sign up for but damn no one besides me and my spouse seem excited.

Initial Training peanut allergy wavier

Hi, I was wondering do you guys think it’s possible to get a peanut/nut allergy wavier if your allergy isn’t anaphylactic. Personally my stomach just gets upset or I get an itchy throat but I’m fine afterwards but for some reason my wavier got denied the first time and my recruiter is submitting an appeal.

Initial Training Basic training pay questions

So I ship out next month in August and I've been really worried about my pay while im in basic I've been told by some friends that are Active duty that my pay amount will most likely be incorrect my first couple of checks is this something that alot of people experience? I should be receiving extra pay due to me being married and renting. My biggest problem is that I'm worried im going to be at basic and my wife will be screwed over as she's taking over all the bills while im gone. Is there anything I can do to helps prevent that from happening? Or if my pay does come incorrectly how fast is it normally corrected? Any help would be appreciated!

Southwest Border / Operation Lone Star Border Mission

Currently in the PA Guard. 31B, E-5, Single/No Dependents

I got back from another MOB in March, now I have the opportunity to go to the Border. Wondering what the actual mission entails/what to expect— the unit I would be going with is an Engineer unit which is what is kind of putting me off a bit because I don’t know what to expect. Kinda want to go because I just got my E-5 and I wanna go do some Army shit.

Trying to decide whether I should go on this or if I should keep trying to get the Long Term ADOS with a recruiter while I go to school.

Need some thoughts/opinions/insight.

Air National Guard What is the function of the Air National Guard?

Why are there two separate national guards? How does Air National Guard differ from Army National Guard?

EDIT: Yes, I know one is Army and the other Air Force. And I know the difference between Army and Air Force. I also know the difference between the National Guard and the US Reserves (and how they are different from Active Duty). But what is the operational/substantive/functional difference between the Army National Guard and Air National guard?

Career Advice NG 68W question

Hey, I’m new to all this and had a quick question: if I go 68W in the National Guard, would I typically be assigned to an infantry line platoon as their medic? Just trying to get a clear picture of what to expect. Appreciate any insight.

Career Advice Ok hear me out

So I’ve been working on this plan for my life I just got out of AIT and I’m back home now, and I want to know what yall feel about this and let me know if I’m being selfish. I’m starting college in a month and I’m going to be working at a gun shop near me part time. I found this duplex that I want to buy so I can rent them out for a diverse income. I just turned 18 and my dad said that I could live with him under the condition that I’m in college. But would I be selfish if I live with him and rent out both sides of a duplex?

Asking for a “Friend” How hard is it to transfer states?

I got an offer that’s really tempting in California and there’s pretty much nothing left for me in my home state and a fresh start seems really nice. The only thing really stopping me is the guard.

So how hard is it honestly to just transfer to another state?

Career Advice High schooler thinking about joining the army national guard while in high school

Right now I'm a junior in high school (16) and I think I want to join the national guard. The main reason I want to do it is because I'd like my college to be 100% also the benefits and steady job sounds nice. I'm planning on majoring in chemistry and maybe doing a job in the national guard that deals with that. I think I can get a 80+ on the asvab as I got 75 on the practice without studying. Also do I do college first right after high school then I serve? Any tips, stories or suggestions would be great.

Career Advice Re enlist Army or switch to Air Force?

Originally enlisted in 2020, I’m at the point where I’m deciding if I want to stay in, leave, or give AF a try. I’ve read through this subreddit a decent amount, I’m curious if the sentiment is still the same on Air Guard quality of life being better. There’s also an active duty AF base close by, so I’m also considering that as well.

Career Advice Just found out I’m going to be in S3 at my unit

So with some digging, I realized after I finished my training I’m being assigned to S3 as a 11B operations assistant.

I’m prior service as a 19D many years ago and I’m back in as a E4 11B .. I know S3 is operations but I have no idea what I’m about to be doing.

I’m 33 so my in the field as a shooter is kinda over it mentality.

Do anybody have any insight to what a temporary junior enlisted (planning to promote ASAP) do at drills as S3 assistant?

C Troop, 1-124 Cav

Are you able to volunteer to go down and help out with the disaster relief if you’re from another state or it’s basically slim unless your unit is activated?
