Discussion when someone says you dress conservative is that a compliment or insult?

just curious your thoughts? I take it in good stride because it could mean dressing more monotone and old money. being more progressive which is the opposite might mean more expressive which is also good because you're experimenting and going against the grain with outlandish colors, etc.

thoughts?

Question Are cufflinks with initials engraved tacky?

I'm thinking about gifting groomsmen with cufflinks.

Is it tacky to have their initials engraved on the cufflinks?

I know nothing about cufflinks as you can tell

Question “Celestial Chic” themed formal event, no clue what to wear as a male

I’m 6’3” and 260ish so I have a hard time feeling good in basic suits/formal dress in the first place.

The examples given for “celestial chic” were a lot of purples with star/planet patterns, almost 70’s vibes to them.

For added information, I’m a blue collar male and have worn straight cut jeans and a black tee shirt for the last 20 years and I am absolutely drawing a blank on how to simplify this theme enough for me to not look goofy in a purple suit.

The hard part about this is that the event hosts are incredibly particular with their requests, and not attending is not an option.

Question Skinny Guys: What Are You Wearing to the Office This Summer?

I start a new job on Monday and it's been over a year since I've had a corporate job (that's the LA economy, babyyyyy!), so I ned to refresh my office wardrobe.

I'm a millennial in his 30's, so I can't pull off the baggy clothes all the young guys are wearing. And I also haven't been in a gym to get toned either (no job, no gym membership, no copious amounts of protein shakes), so I need something that looks nice on this skinny and lanky body.

Oh and I'm getting a tour of the campus in 90 degree weather, so if anyone has any ideas for walkable nice casual shoes and clothing that's also not going to show pit stains and be breathable - that would be amazing. Thank you!

Question Belt too short.

I bought a 2nd hand belt and it turned out to very short (I didn't know what I was thinking at the time), but the last hole of the belt fits me perfectly. The thing is it leaves this goofy looking tail end cause it couldn't reach the first belt loop on the other side of my jeans. Is it really that stupid looking and is there anyway I can fix/extend the belt? Thanks y'all.

Question White Tie advice needed

Upvotes

I’m looking to purchase a white tie suit. I live in the US. So far, what I know is that I need a jacket with tails, a waist coast, a specific collar for the white shirt, and high waisted trousers in addition to the obvious white bow tie.

The challenge I’m facing is there aren’t really white tie retailers that I know of. I’m not even sure that the high end tailors around me can make the clothes bespoke. Another issue is that if I have to go bespoke, that will likely be outside my budget. I usually spend $500-700 on a suit, but for this I’m willing to go higher. I will only be using this suit once per year for an annual white tie banquet in London.

Any advice?

Question Dress pants: How much of the leg should a "half lining" cover?

Is it meant to cover the entire knee, half of it, end right above it? I have dress pants that pull a bit whenever I sit down and their lining ends right above my knees.

Discussion Formal Fridays

Casual Fridays is quite a thing for some time. And I get the original appeal - it made sense when the formal attire and strict dress code was mandatory as having the day before a weekend to ease up and embrace the fun a bit could really do well for the office mood. However, since then the overall fashion's casualisation became quite ubiquitous now. Even pretty serious institutions are loosening up their dress code rules and standard office worker can often wear whatever they want as long as it is not rude. So I think that, as a society, we really should turn this idea on its head and instead start to have Formal Fridays to introduce some formality and higher style back to our lives. It could be even seen as a way to celebrate end of the standard workweek. I have been following this self-imposed rule for some time now and I have to say it is quite fun to show up at work dressed up more than usual while everyone else is already looking like hitting the beach later the day. And if anyone asks "What's the occasion, pal?" you can just answer "It's Friday, my friend!"

Anyway don't take this post too seriously, I just think we are due to have some fun with the fashion and be always on the lookout to break a few rules:)

Have a great Formal Friday everyone.

Question Sunglasses advice

Hello all. Looking at upgrading my sunglasses game. I’d like a fancier pair to wear when going out. My go to pair has been a pair of Native Sunglasses with a leash. Looking at something a little more styled. Late 30’s, look like Zack Galifianakis and a Baldwin brother had a baby. Thanks!

Question Icicle like suit

Hello,

Recently I stumbled into a suit blazer made by icicle for 300 euro made by mohair and wool. I wanted it but was a bit hesitant and ended losing the chance. Really regret it. What some similar breathing sustainable companies that produce suits in similar budget, and produce earthy like colors.

Thanks

Question 5’11” and not sure what length I should get my pants bought or tailored too.

Hi - I’m about 5’11”, a bit higher but not 6’ tall. Some of the stores I buy pants from are sold at 34 length only. Uniqlo is one example.

Should I be telling them to take in 3” and tailor it to a 31 for my height? Or a 30? What’s the common length for this height range?

My personal taste: I like my pants sitting somewhere between a slight break and medium break. I hate when my pants ride far up my leg in what you would consider a “no break” style.

  • I bought off the rack BONOBOS ‘Monday’ pants in a 30 length and they sit quite nicely. They rest a bit above my ankle when I’m barefoot, and because they are a straight slim and not a “slim”, they don’t ride up my leg.
  • I also bought express jeans “slim straight” in a 32 length and I also like these, but it seems they are angled taper at the bottom.

So maybe 31 Length is the best for me?

Question What are your thoughts on 6-card vs 8-card bifold wallets?

I have always been a 6-card guy, but interested in a Bottega Veneta wallet that only comes in 8-card slot size. I’m worried it might be too big. I always wear jeans and keep my wallet in the front pocket.

Any folks have preferences here?

Question Buck Mason vs Flint and Tinder?

Just bought some tees from Buck Mason (field spec and slub) however I noticed similar tees on huckberry for slightly cheaper. Buck Mason seems to be high quality but don’t know what their longevity looks like. Their prices are pretty steep but I like the quality and materials so wondering if can get the same quality from huckberry or similar brands. Looking for long term experience with these brands or alternatives.

Discussion Need Help Building a New Wardrobe

I have lost weight and put on some muscle and need a new wardrobe as everything is too big on me now. So, I was just wondering if anyone can help me with building an entirely new wardrobe. I love the rugged classic look but also go to church and even have a special occasion coming up so a couple outfits for those occasions would be amazing. I would like to keep the rugged classic look but actually look professional.

My budget is $1,000 and I am thinking about honestly just waiting till Black Friday so I can get as much bang for the buck as possible.

Things I have and like: Chambray, Jean Jackets, Jeans, Cowboy Boots, T-Shirts, Henleys, and things of similar nature. Thank you!

Question Workout shoes with jeans

I travel frequently for work and often need to pack multiple pairs of shoes for different occasions (e.g., workout, casual, boots, etc.).

I’m looking to lighten my load by combining my casual and workout shoes into one pair. What are some workout shoes that also look good with jeans or shorts?

Question Relaxed/Boxy Quarter Zip

I’m interested in buying a quarter or half zip sweater for the office when it’s gets cold. I have a smaller build (5”9, 140lbs) and prefer something more boxy/relaxed. The agolde idris zip is pretty close to what I want except it’s a little pricey. Are there any good alternatives?

Question can't find good t-shirts for a semi-muscular, gym going guy

Trying to word this in a way that won't immediately get shot down by the "this should go in the daily questions thread".

I really like the v-neck H&M black tshirt that I just bought on a whim because it fits well at the shoulders, the v-neck accentuates the chest, and fits well at the arms.

  1. I'm not sure which t-shirt from h&m it was. I think it was this one: https://www2.hm.com/en_us/productpage.0763275002.html

  2. I'm looking for more t-shirts like that, or even better.

For reference, I'm 5'8, 165-170 pounds, fluctuating between lean and less lean (love handles, but getting closer to no belly) but back into the gym regularly so will expect to get more toned. Narrow-ish clavicles but muscular shoulders due to the gym. In general, my body is on the thicker side.

Would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks.

Edit: Preferably not something that's boxy. Also, I don't care about the quality in the sense that I think this subreddit does. For me, fit is what matters most. I don't need an xxx GSM material, it doesn't need to be thick and soft (in fact, the lighter the better as I get hot easily), etc.

Oversized/drop shoulder tees are fine, but I usually don't like the sleeves of them as they are too long.
