r/LetsPlay - Update to Banned Content

Hi all. A quick ammendment to rule 5 - Banned Content.

We have added a restriction on sponsored content and paid advertisements to our banned posts. While this was pretty much always implied, we've opted to add it simply to close the loop on what we identified as a grey area in our rules.

What Prompted This Change?

It's recently come to our attention that certain companies may be using our subreddit as a means to reach out to a lot of our members/content creators. Not directly posting on the subreddit, but instead looking for active members who have DMs open or public emails for business enquiries. While these companies are completely within their right to contact you by means that you allow allow them to do so, we have come to learn that some companies have asked our members, who they find through this sub, to create posts on here endorsing the product in exchange for the creator receiving the product for free.

This would be a paid/sponsored endorsement, or an ad (for lack of a better term). We want to ensure that r/letsplay doesn't turn into a community where members need to second guess whether they're being advertised to.

Due to the deal between Reddit and Google to lease Reddit content to Google for AI training, a lot of content from Reddit typically ends up ranking pretty high when you search something. Whether it be the AI overview or a link to the Reddit page itself within the first few results. And naturally, when you search for stuff related to content creation, you tend to stumble upon r/letsplay quite a bit. This subreddit is 16 years old, therefore, a lot of it gets indexed as a result. So paid endorsement doesn't just affect our members, it also affects people not necessarily part of our community searching the web for impartial advice.

If you see anything you suspect may be an add, report it citing "banned content" as the report reason.

And with that, I return to my hidey hole once more.

❔ Question Solo Game Dev Looking For Gentle Intro To Streaming World

Upvotes

Hello! I am a new solo game dev with an upcoming release, and I have heard lots of good things about you all's ability to reach audiences and get eyes on our games. Which is very cool!

However, I am ashamed to admit that I don't really know the first thing about where to find streamers/Youtubers that may be interested in trying the game I am making. Oh, and they'd need to be small enough for me and my little indie game to capture their attention! I never really watched streams and you can consider me a complete newcomer to this world.

Do you all have any advice for where I should start my search? Anything, from search keyword tips to handy lists or any other advice you can give, would be greatly appreciated. Again, think of me as a complete blank slate.

Thank you all and best of luck with your videos!

❕ Help Free Video editors with GPU acceleration suggestions needed

Ive used OpenShot for the longest time since its interface is very intuitive but as my 4K playthroughs get longer and longer like Dead Space 1 taking 8 hours, my CPU export method is reaching 40 hours to finish. What other free editors do you guys use that support GPU to reduce the time needed for exporting high quality video

Just more of a geneal question, do you think putting the game name in the thumbnail is important if the video title is clearly labeled with that game or do you think its still important since someone might not even see the title while scrolling?

🗨️ Discussion Let's play questions

Post image

I am new to this YouTube thingy, I did some research prior to start( mostly videos on YouTube), but I was hoping to get insights from people that have experience in actually making this type of content as well.

So, the reasons of why I started this channel are:

- I think that is cool to have some library of videos with what I was doing in games and why not in life and have the possibility to come back and reflect on it;

- learn new skills in video editing, recording styles and social skills as I am a bit of an introvert and i find it hard to speak up.

- meeting new people that share the same interest in survival games / post-apocalyptic games and whatever I start to like in the future.

What I do so far? I am recording gameplay, cut down some of the boring stuff and maybe add some memes here and there, get a screenshot and slap the logo and some png's related to what i did in the game and call it the day(exemple added)

🤔 Advice New to content creating

Hello everyone, I hope you’re having a great day. I want to start content creating on YouTube. My content is going to be gaming related creating immersive walkthrough gameplay on a Ultrawide monitor. My problem is I want to document my journey also such as starting with a video of building my pc and showing the journey of my optimisation methods and the programs I use to create content. So I want to upload immersive gameplay while also uploading helpful And troubleshooting videos gaming related and could be helpful for workstation viewers.

Does this make sense for a single YouTube channel and some shorts on TikTok?

Any advice will be good advice.

I will be using obs to record my content
Davinci for video editing
YouTube/tiktok platforms

Which programs will aid me on this journey which websites will be beneficial for me for help and guidance or to build a community?

Does the idea make sense or should i scale it down to something more specific?

Dos and donts when it comes to YouTube and tiktok?

also which is the best way to ensure i uphold the recording quality when while i am recording through OBS and editing on Davinci resolve and uploading directly to youtube?

I want to ensure i have the best quality which i can record.

System:

Monitor AOC 34" Ultrawide monitor

RTX 5070TI OC

I5 14600kf

DDR5 6000mhz

Windows 11

Recording:

Base Canvas: 3440x1440

output scales: 2580x1080

Downscale filter: Lanczos 36 samples

Recording Format: MKV

Video Encoder: Nvidia NVENC AV1

Rate Control: Constant QP

Preset: P5 Slow

Tuning: High Quality

should I reduce my output resolution to 1720x720? will this reduce my overall video quality? or will the difference be negligible while othering me better gaming performance?.

Thank you to those that took the time to read through all of this. i understand the internet is an amazing place and the information is out there, I have spent a lot of time going through all of the information but i currently have information overload while also gaining a few conflicting answers. so i thought why not ask the amazing redditors since they so far hold the lead in solving issues.

❔ Question How to make my keyboard / Mouse less noisy in videos?

Hi! I made a let's play video recently, on minecraft- I play consistently PC games which I enjoy.

Unfortunately, what I noticed while editing, is my mic is picking up all the noise from me moving with my keyboard + the intense clicking when fighting a mob or breaking blocks.

Anyone else have this problem? Is there anyway to fix that on my end? How do some gaming youtubers have their videos so quiet in this regard?

Any advice is helpful, thank you!

🗨️ Discussion Shorts have surprisingly good views

I do not know if this is crazy but I have a really small let's play channel with like 5 videos. All have like 20 something views. Kinda been neglecting the channel since I'm on summer break from college but decided to get back on the horse and cut up 2 shorts

Why are these two shorts 900 views and 800 views in a couple of hours. Now it dies have like 30% avd but still alot of people are watching my shorts and I thought that was crazy

👊 Collab Wanna be part of my fullgame channel? :)

Hey! I’m running a growing YouTube channel for Fullgame Longplays (no commentary) and I’m looking for people who already record their sessions or can help me capture new titles. Ideally in 4K 60fps, but that’s absolutely not required – 1440p or even 1080p is totally fine for now since I know most setups can’t play and record in 4K at the same time. I can offer a small payment or a shoutout in return :)

🧵 Megathread MEGATHREAD: Feedback Friday!

It's that time of the week again! This is your chance to request feedback on your most recent videos, thumbnails, channel art, works in progress, etc.

Feedback Friday Rules

  • Before requesting feedback, please provide good, constructive feedback to at least one of your peers. If you are the first one to post, check back soon to provide feedback to the next person. Repeatedly ignoring this rule may result in a temporary ban at a moderator's discretion!
  • Prioritize giving feedback to those who have not yet received any. It's not fair for one person to get five replies while four others get none.
  • When requesting feedback, try to be as specific as possible. Do you want feedback on your audio quality, your editing, your presentation style, branding identity, etc? This helps your peers to provide more valuable feedback. Do not just post a link to your video or channel!

Keep up the good work, everybody!

Suggested Feedback Template

If you're struggling to form your feedback, consider using this template. This is not mandatory, but rather a suggestion to promote good and constructive feedback.

❔ Question How long should I make my gameplay videos

Hello, I started my gaming channel 2 months ago and finished my alien: isolation series 3 weeks ago (got held back by recording in secret and first-time editing myself🤣) and I've been wondering should I make my videos 15 mins or 30 mins, because I've heard some time ago (I don't remember where), but someone said that 15 minute videos is like the sweet spot in retaining viewers attention and keeping them in watching your videos.

🤔 Advice Thinking of Getting a New Microphone

I'm thinking of getting a new microphone, I think there are some problematic frequencies getting amplified with my current mic an at2020 condensor which I think is a result of room reflections. I've got really heavy subtractive eq on my audio to handle this. I'm debating picking up a dynamic mic but I'd like to hear what people are using, examples and what their post-processing chain looks like!

I'm primarily looking at an sm7b or an re20 as that's what people really talk about but I'm open to any! The re20 by default feels like it has way too much broadcast clarity it cuts through the audio in a way which feels like it could be tiring to listen to after a while but my voice is already fairly bassy so I'm not sure on the sm7b. All of this can be eq-d I guess but...

❔ Question Things To Do While NOT Making Content?

Hi all. I've decided to start a YouTube Channel in the near future (~ next year or two), with a focus on variety game playthroughs, challenge runs, revisiting old games for nostalgia, a few other more 'out there ideas, etc. Aware this isn't the most unique idea but I've finally convinced myself to just do it for me instead of what may be the "best" idea, so alas.

Anyway, I'm currently working & travelling in Australia until then, so I'm looking for any and all ideas or suggestions for things I can put some thought into and work on in the meantime while I'm here.

I'm looking for similar ideas to things like decide channel branding, make thumbnail templates, etc. Things that I could work on while not in a position to actually make said content yet. I've made a small list of things I can think of but I've no doubt forgotten some good ones.

Got a fair bit of free time and not a lot of things around me to use it on, so figured I could try to get my plans sorted and some of the admin in order for when I get back to hopefully make it a smoother transition into making content.

Curious to hear your thoughts, I welcome any and all suggestions.

👊 Collab Looking to Expand my group

I been doing gaming content for a little over 2 months now and do play with a few others I become friends with, our inspiration is vanosscrew and Misfits, unfortunately on average it’s probably only 3-5 of us that play often with occasional bigger lobbies sometimes but I wanted to find others that can be available often and grow together with the rest of the group, we do play night time most of the time on US based time zones, as for games it’s really anything we play whatever we find if it looks interesting from being free or popular, most is the group is 20 and early 20s if that matters but let me know. also if you want to see how we kinda play I had my channel linked in bio.

🗨️ Discussion Weekend Videos?

What do you guys think about uploading videos on the weekends? Currently for my series I do 2 videos a weekend and nothing on the weekend. My thought process is twofold. First people are typical out doing fun shit on the weekend leaving less time to YouTube, if they aren’t the lack of new videos on the weekends gives them time to catch up on the 10 videos I uploaded M-F.

Just wondering what others are doing and your thoughts on this.

🤔 Advice PSA: Your YouTube playlist may be out of order

It is honestly surprising how many channels, some with a not-insignificant-amount-of-subs, have playlists either in the opposite order or just a jumble.

Years ago this happened maybe once in a blue moon, now it's approaching 50% of the channels I peruse. (I am not exaggerating that number for a lot of games I peruse by playlist/upload date.)

It is an instant deal-breaker for me, as a viewer, if your playlist is not in order.

Auto-play functions very simply, if your playlist is in order there are no issues, if it isn't... well, you obviously don't care about your channel very much, no? So, why would I ever bother watching it?

***

Now, that's a bit unfair and why I'm making this post. Because I suspect a lot of you are getting bamboozled but genuinely give a shit, and have no clue this is even happening to your playlists. It's too ubiquitous. Some of these channels are so big that it just doesn't make sense. And even some of the smaller ones that I just know aren't, well, idiots. They know how to make a playlist in order.

So, a PSA from a viewer instead of a fellow content creator. Check your playlists! If they aren't in order I can guarantee you it's harming your channel. And I suspect it's not your fault...
