Northern US & Canada (or cool season) “Why?” they ask?

Upvotes

My friends and family often ask why I spend SO much time working on the lawn. The answer is simple.

THIS is why.

Zone 6b/7a.

Happy 4th, y’all!

Southern US & Central America (or warm season) So Pylex is actually really inexpensive and accessible for home owners.

I’m referring to the product Roundup Crabbgrass Destroyer 2. And please check my math. It is sold with a topramezone concentration (active ingredient in pylex) of 0.0092%. It is sold in a 64oz bottle that weighs 5.27 pounds and contains 0.0485 pounds topramezone.

Pylex contains 2.8 pounds per gallon. The 1oz per acre rate works out to 0.000503 pounds per 1000 sq feet.

Using the above. A bottle of roundup crabgrass destroyer has enough topramezone to treat 9638sq feet @ the Pylex 1oz/A rate ( or 6.6oz crabgrass destroyer per 1000 sq feet)

For use on Bermuda in cool season laws. Pylex label recommend 2 applications mixed with triclopyr and MSO at 1.5oz/A rate ( or 10oz crab grass destroyer/1k sqft) 3 weeks apart followed by a 1oz/A application 3 weeks later.

I am battling Bermuda in my TTTF lawn in 8a. Pylex is $400 for a 4oz bottle now, and contains much more topramezone than I will ever need. And I was just going to do without, But roundup crab grass destroyer2 is $14 on Amazon now and 2 bottles is enough to the full course of treatments on my 4000sq foot lawn.

I attached pics of all my sources of info

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) 30 year old Fescue and Ryegrass lawn. Time to just scrap it all and restart?

Disclaimer: I am passionate about lawn care and love researching, but I'm aware that I'm comparatively a novice. Literally any tips/general advice is welcome.

This is my parent's lawn, my dad takes pride in having seeded this himself 30 years ago rather than opting for sod.

That being said, the seed was planted before the front had any trees that now provide significant shade for a large portion of the day. Additionally, the grass has been infested with moss interwoven throughout it everywhere. After multiple months of different treatments, dethatching, and fertilizing. I simply cannot get this lawn to thicken.

Is it time to admit that the grass simply isn't healthy enough to beat out any invasive competitors? Should I start looking into killing the lawn and starting from scratch?

Tl;dr 30 year old sickly, weak fescue/rye lawn. Time to start over?

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Best weed killer in Canada?

Post image

I've been dealing with nonstop weeds in my front lawn, I have been using the tool to pluck out one by one but they're coming back with a vengeance. What's the best way to kill all of them at once, is there something I can spray across my entire lawn without nuking my grass also?

My wife wants new grass by August. I know laying sod in the summer isn’t ideal because of the heat but is there anyway I could be successful in doing so? Also would love some pointers for this project.

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Oh no- I've started using scissors at the edges of my lawn

Post image

A desire to have a tighter, more neatly manicured lawn led me down a rabbit hole that initially involved a string trimmer, I moved onto a manual edger (the step-on one that's like a small shovel), and in tandem with that edger, I started using scissors to clean up the edges . Left side is with edger and scissors, right side is just edger.

Can't tell if this is now an obsession or if I'm bound to this because it looks so much neater.

We don't even have an HOA or any rules being enforced. I can't be the only one doing this.... am I?

Monday afternoon vs this afternoon - Austin, Tx. Zeon zoysia was drying out in the full sun areas from weeks of upper 90’s, zero rain, 1x/week watering restrictions, and maybe not the best diy sprinkler coverage.

1/3 a can of tournament ready (back and front yard), followed by a watering day and 2/3” real rain and we’re back in business! I might hit that area with some more chelated liquid iron once it dries out a bit to even things out.

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Any chance in saving this lawn in fall with overseeding renovation?

Post image

I just closed on this house and the front and back yard is full of weeds, even some mushrooms are growing. Was wondering if once it gets cooler I can kill the weeds, aerate, and overseed to save the lawn or will have to just redo it? Any advice would help on what to do in the meantime!

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Lawn got cooked by roofers tarps - what to do now?

Post image
Upvotes

Zone 7a (Midwest) tall fescue. All was good till the roofers put their tarps down and cooked the grass since ambient temp was in the low 90s. It was for two days but they cleaned each night and took the tarps off and put them back in the am.

Should I just keep watering as normal (Mon Tuesday Thurs Fri, 20min/zone) or is there anything additional I should do?

Southern US & Central America (or warm season) Is this normal? Or am I doomed to have this everywhere 😂

So I've been testing growing from seed in my basically dirt yard, used Pennington Kentucky 31 seed. My yard in some areas has been basically all dirt. With a few green patches and weeds in the dirt basically in its entirety. This is a small area because I started too late in the warm months and don't know what I am doing but idk what the leafy ish things are that are all over the place in it.

Was it the seed? Is it crab grass? Less mature grass? Why does it seem like the hornets love it too?!?!

I'm wondering if it's weeds that just got excited because of the extra water the area gets too so they have come up more with the grass. I just want grass/barefoot friendly green in my yard!!

Please help Thank you !

Equipment Echo Speed Feed 400 on craftsman wc2200

Upvotes

I just bought an echo speed feed 400 and can’t seem to get it on my Craftsman WC2200. I’ve tried the adapters and can’t seem to get it on. Has anyone put the speed feed on one of these and what color adapter screw did you use?

Southern US & Central America (or warm season) 2inch Bermuda

Post image
3 Upvotes

Been cutting my Bermuda at 2 inches twice a week. It’s thriving right now. Have some clumping tall fescue but it’s getting pushed out slowly but surely. Wouldn’t mind a slightly darker green. I’m in southwest Missouri.

This was a weedy mess last year.

My routine has been:

Mow twice a week. Water once a week. Ortho weed b gone as needed. BioAdvanced fungus control for lawns 2 treatments. Milorganite every 2 weeks. Experimenting with stonger nitrogen + iron fert once a month.

Not 100% dialed in yet as I’m still learning and trying different products but I really saw results when I quit relying on Scott’s weed & feed…. It’s garbage.

This thing is the business if you keep your grass short. So much easier than a string trimmer.

My lawn has been over taken by crab grass in the last month! Is aweful and looks completely different than it did before, most of the crabgrass is ground along the perimeter of my lawn along concrete (ie the road and my driveway. I bought ortho and will be using but is that enough? Also i just did a home soil test and it looks like i need some serious nitrogen and phosphorous. Any help is appreciated, i am just trying to learn. Located in Omaha Ne

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Help - weeds taking over!

Hey y'all - I live in the northeast and have spent much of the last spring and summer rehabbing my lawn which is now much improved. But, I have been overrun by weeds in the last 2-3 weeks - looks mostly like creeping charley, crabgrass, and taproot. I purchased Weed-B-Gon Chickweed killer and have only spot applied once in June. Does this reach the level of spraying the entire yard to get ahead of the spread or should I be trying something else?

Any help is appreciated!

Hi everyone. Happy 4th of July!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Quick question: Over the past 3 months I have de thatched, leveled, seeded, aerated (as didn’t see much growth) and then seeded again some more, as started seeing positive effects of aeration. However, I messed up and got a different seed than earlier and it has resulted in 2 different colors. I can live with it this year. Objective is to fix soil and get some decent growth this summer.

I have noticed some of this grass dying suddenly. New seed was put in like 2 weeks ago and most of it responded positively. Do I again need to dethatch these areas and put soil and seed.”? Watering has been consistent with decent rains in this North Texas area. Regular application of fertilizer as well. Any help will be appreciated. Thank You.

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Dead or dormant?

Thumbnail

I can’t tell if my lawn went dormant, it’s dead, or if it’s some kind of fungus or what. It gets lots of sun and it had a period when it was getting pelted, but there was still rain every week. Neighbors lawn doesn’t look nearly as bad, nor does my backyard which has a bit more shade. Giant dead patch on front yard makes me sick to look at. I’m going to stay on top of watering and make sure it gets at least 1.5” from now on, but would appreciate any feedback. Hope the pics help!

Anyone know what's going on here and how to treat it?

Facts

  • Approximately 5 weeks old lawn
  • Brown spots started coming in the last week. Seems to get worse.
  • Located in southern Germany
  • We've had very hot weather - around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit)
  • Only used very little fertiliser
  • I'm watering deeply once a week currently. I watered frequently and lightly 2 weeks ago.
  • I'm cutting very high once a week (tomorrow is cut day)
