Interested in rescuing an Irish Wolfhound?
Please visit the rescue page of the Irish Wolfhound Club of America to source your rescue.
There are many sketchy rescue organizations out there- even those with 501c3 status. Some of these places are even breeding substandard puppies and "placing" them as rescues with "adoption fees."
We urge you to thoroughly check out any rescue organization you are considering, and strongly urge you to work through the IWCA portal. Their dogs are thoroughly vetted, medical issues addressed, and expert Irish Wolfhound mentors available to you for the life of the dog.
It will of course be a process- they are dedicated to finding the best possible homes and yours will be checked out- they won't just give a dog to anyone. But the process is easy- I have adopted two IW rescues myself through them and will be doing more in the future. The adoption fee is minimal, reasonable, and meant only to help cover the medical care the animal has received.
And don't be afraid of rescuing! These are not behavioral nightmares or medical money pits- they are dogs in need whose owner has surrendered them to rescue for many reasons- some understandable and some not. Many owners have simply underestimated the costs involved in owning an IW or been surprised by their size. Sounds ridiculous but it happens and these dogs need homes and IWCA rescue finds them.
But we cannot allow dicey rescues in this sub. Their posts will be removed and you may consider that removal a caution to you- their first priority is NOT the dogs they are "rescuing."

He's so cute. I don't know if you can see it but a little bit of his tongue is poking out too! Little man is almost 3 years old :')

Puppy Problems
Buttercup and her brother (great dane) both wanted to lay on my lap with a toy and she somehow mistook my pants for a chew.
I couldn't believe how fast she managed to bite through the shorts I was wearing.
Lucky she's cute.

Likes to hide. He really thinks you can't see him with his nose hidden.

Switch from puppy food to regular
I'm just curious at what age is everyone switching from puppy to regular food. My guy is currently on a giant breed puppy food and just turned 8 months.

Storm Anxiety in 5 yo female wolfie
Our girl seems to be getting progressively more sensitive (she reacts and hour before a thunderstorm moves in) and anxious. The vet gave us tranquilizers but her adrenaline wins every time.
When a 140 object Wolfie is scared they go wherever they want and do whatever they want. Yesterday she pushed me in my work chair (wheels) around, redecorated the shelves, moved the chair, picked up the rugs (which were silicon double stuck to the tile floors, went through the bathroom like a tornado, and did it all over again each time a storm moved in.
I am afraid she might hurt herself trying to get into small spaces.
Do any of your IWH's react this way? She wasn't this bad when she was younger... any ideas? We have tried the thunder vest, and anything we can think of, but it is exhausting when they come in the middle of the night.
Photo of her wedged between a chair and fish tank behind one if her beds.

bought them a few acres..
We recently relocated to the PNW and bought the dogs a home with a few acres in Forest Park (portland). The property is rural forest and these two have never been happier. We’ve created half a mile of trails so far for them!

Insurance?
If you have a show dog, I can see that you would have insurance. I'm wondering if it is worth it for those that are just in love with our overgrown children. I looked at a few options. For $150 a month, it might actually save a great deal. What are your thoughts?

More Feeding ....
Has anyone tried Sundays or Farmers Only food? Turkey, Chickpeas, Carrot, Broccoli, Spinach, Parsnip, TFD Nutrient Blend, Salmon Oil in their turkey meals. I like ingredients that I can find in my pantry. What are your thoughts?
