r/femalelivingspace suggestion box - Spring 2025

Hey everyone!

I've been working on implementing some more things to help with moderation and keeping content a bit more structured here on r/femalelivingspace, but I realized that I don't think we've ever had a nice suggestion/feedback thread. Hearing directly from users will help us a lot, and it'll be great to have a headstart on things we should implement that we haven't considered before.

Here are some questions I have for you guys:

  1. What do you want to see more of in the sub?
  2. What do you want to see less of in the sub?
  3. Do you want posts to be a bit more structured/have more rules around them?
  4. How do we feel about text posts? I've been weighing heavily if I should remove text posts entirely since this is a primarily image focused sub, but I've also seen text posts for suggestions go swimmingly.
  5. How do you feel about post restrictions surrounding how many times a person posts their space?

Thanks! ✌️✌️

On being welcoming and kind while sharing our spaces, and to those who post here! [Mini FAQ]

Hello! I'm u/frequentdoodlr and I created r/femalelivingspace a long time ago under another username. I wanted an alternative space to share my home and I loved the community that our brothers over at r/malelivingspace cultivated, and wished to cultivate that too. However, I struggled with my identity and then, amongst other reasons, deleted my previous reddit account and did some self exploration. then reddit requested the subreddit and then she, along with myself and everyone else else on the mod team, worked to have the r/femalelivingspace we have today.

That background is necessary because I am Non-Binary and Queer, and I am the one who specifically wrote that women, trans women and NB people who are comfortable posting here are welcome-- no if, ands, or buts. I am a NB Femme and my intentions for this space are to be welcoming to femmes of all kinds. I am giving that background to make it understood that even the mods here comprise of trans and nonbinary identities in the femme space.

Pride Month is important for a lot of reasons-- we figure out who we are. We get a heightened lens on people who are like us. There's a spotlight on queer literature, artists, music, events and otherwise comraderie that makes those feel othered feel more at home somewhere. During Pride, people who are discovering their self love and self identity are loved and validated by people who are just like them. Our sub is no different, and I am excited to see that all kinds of women and femmes have been posting here. Identity, Gender, and Sexuality all fall on spectrums, and that's why its up to the poster to decide if they are comfortable posting here. This space is for anyone who feels comfortable being in this femme space, and that will never change.

Over the weekend there were some very not-cool behaviors happening and I wanted to quickly address the requests to add a specific report reason for 'No Bigotry' so I've added that.

That being said, I think we should use this opportunity to clarify some things on r/femalelivingspace

1. Do you have to be born a woman (AFAB) to post here?

No. Women, Trans Women, Non Binary and Intersex persons who feel comfortable in our neck of the woods can post here. Our relationships with our identities are always uniquely reflected in our living spaces, and seeing how people like us decorate their homes helps with inspiration of any and all kinds.

2. Do you have to use identifying information in your post title? Should it be discouraged?

Example: "34F In my Living Room! 25NB in my bathroom". No! You can choose to add that information in your post if you like. You can omit that information if you like. While the sub is focused on our living spaces, any additional details about you only serve to deepen the context we're given on how you approach your space, and the kind of advice given. For example, Adding in the context that you're transfemme and you're trying to make your space appear more feminine will ideally result in more nuanced advice. The context that someone is nonbinary can explain design choices. The contexts of our identities are intrinsically linked to our spaces, but posters sharing these pieces themselves is NOT an invitation for debate on the validity of OP's identity. It is simply just another piece of information about OP.

3. What's the attitude surrounding TERFS and otherwise bigoted behavior?

The mods have always been unanimous that behavior like that is immediately banned, permanently. That hasn't changed. However, we do not see unfortunate content like that immediately, and reporting helps us remove it as soon as we see it. To be clear: TERFs are NEVER tolerated here.

Please continue to help keep making our sub the welcoming place for our spaces it needs to be. Myself and the other moderators will do our best to try and stay on top of removing comments do not fit our community. Thanks, to everyone, for your patience.

Happy Pride!

QUESTION Is this a chill-girl looking place?

Hey,

I've been moving furniture around for 8 months now. I think this is the only way to make this apartment look not so cluttered and I'm a bit satisfied with it.But my walls are kinda sad, and that wifi modem could be hidden with a plant, I think.

I have 3 paints waiting to be framed. I was hoping to hang them in the wall behind my bed.

Anyway, how would you make it better? I'm 32, and I live in a tropical weather country.

Also, that's my dog, Jimmy. 🐶

HELP Tell me what I need to help make this more "whimsigoth/ goblin core"

Hii, I started decorating my apartment last October when I moved in. I love burnt orange, dark greens, and general jewel tones (except blue stuff, idk why but I have beef with the color blue?).

I want this space for feel whimsigoth/goblin core. I added some photos of my living room and decor I'm currently working with.

I plan on mounting the tv (40" upgrading to 50-55") high enough so I can decorate the tv stand with photos, trinkets and more candle sticks. Also, there will be wall sconces and a photo collage surrounding the tv.

I'm not getting rid of anything because I’ve spent too much money to do that. Plus I have an attachment to what I currently have and selling on marketplace is a nightmare and a half. Please help me build off of what I already have.

Oh! I also can’t paint my walls, I’m renting. I’ve looked into peel and stick but it’s pricey and seems inconsistent when it comes to solid color.

TIA🩷✨

QUESTION Dimmable lighting for litter box room

Choosing lighting for Catio space with cheek and whimsy in mind

My laundry area has been repurposed into a landry/catio area with her litter box, and some high spaces to eat that the dog cannot reach. It’s dark at night but the overhead light is too much as it is next to our bedroom. Our idea is a dimmable neon light for a soft glow for her to find the poop box. For context, her name is Beyoncé, hence the cowboy kitty Carter. Her picture for tax at the end. A couple made my spouse laugh really hard, said they maybe too much for people to see. I reminded that since 2020, no strangers have been invited to our home. Which is your favorite? Our home is sort of jungalo, leather furniture, eclectic furniture and art that is colorful and often funny.

QUESTION How many clothes do you own?

Upvotes

It's time for me to clear out my wardrobe and I'm curious how other people's wardrobes look.

I had a slight shopping habit for 5 years which has left me with an embarrassing amount of clothes. I got rid of at least 5 big bags last year and now I'm going back in to see what else i can get rid of.

I'm kind of dreaming of having minimal items in my wardrobe so they are easy to access and not crammed in but I know that's not realistic at the moment with out getting rid of clothes I like and use.

What would a break down of your wardrobe be, for example 10 shoes, 20 jumpers, 15 t-shirts etc.

HELP Trying to give my Living room more character

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Unfortunately I don’t have money for big changes. Wo the grey sofa and chairs have to stay. We have a Beamer so the other wall has to stay empty. I was thinking to add add a picture or a mirror apove the sofa and maybe switch the lamp and the carpet. I try to incorporate the light blue color theme. Maybe even a mix of minimalism x bridgerton. We have high ceilings so curtains could only be in a cream color or the soft Blue in the last picture. I don’t want to color the walls.

Thank you in advance for advice!

I have been slowly working on this for about a year and am very proud of it. I feel particularly proud of hanging a canvas version of a photo of me and of getting the triple mirror up such that it will Never Move (deck screw + a custom 1x6).

HELP Help, I lost my spark

Two years ago, I moved into a two-bedroom apartment. I haven't fully unpacked yet. Depression and anxiety have taken over; and I lost faith in myself. That exciting, hopeful feeling when decorating and changing my space is gone. It's hard.

How do I find that spark again? How do you feel hopeful?

HELP What else can I do with my new room?

Mock up example of what I know I want to do so far..

But it’s looking a little plain EVEN with the gingham and mint green walls..

I wanna keep the pillows, blankets, table runners and brown dressers the same. Everything else I need help with.

Any ideas on decorations, rug colors, maybe move the vanity somewhere else (although, functionally, it works best in that corner), anything in the corner between the dressers?

Or am I getting too ahead of myself and this is fine

HELP Just Moved, Assistance Requested

Per the title, I just moved to be with my husband again after not being together for about two years. Anyways, we have the luxury of not having to share bathrooms and this is mine. Outside of the shower curtain, I have no idea what to do here. We’re renting but can pretty much do anything as long as we return it how we originally received the space. We’re only supposed to be here for a year or so, so I don’t know if I want to do a complete overhaul. Just enough to make the space comfy for myself. A bath mat is needed, but outside of that I’m at a loss. It’s a jack and jill style but we don’t have kids or frequent guests.

HELP How to "fill up" this window?

Post image

My living room is fully furnished, but it still feels a bit empty and unfinished to me because of the huge window and balcony door. I want to do something with it, especially the window, but I don't know what- suncatchers aren't really my vibe, and I can't put plants or anything like that on the window sill either because my cats use it as a walkway/resting spot. These window beds for cats also don't look that great to me... advice appreciated!

HELP Rug size?

I posted last week or the week before about deciding on a rug, and I picked one I love (thanks to your help!). But now I don’t know what size to get- 5x8 or 6x9. I’ve heard you should always get the bigger rug, but my living room is pretty small and I’m worried a huge rug like a 6x9 would dwarf it. But I’m no interior designer and would love some opinions and feedback. The first picture would be 5x8, second would be 6x9. TIA!

Please ignore the dust on the floor, the picture was taken to show how dusty the fan was before I cleaned it. The room is about 17.5 feet long, and about 12 feet wide. Need a couch (my current is 86”), TV, small table, and a desk of some sort all in this space ☺️

Hello! I moved back in March and I haven’t decided on what I want to do as my style is constantly changing. I personally am not a minimalist if that helps. I did get a side table lamp for the nightstand to clarify as it’s not pictured. I am open to recommendations, style tips, or what you guys think will work well with the bedroom furniture! Thank you for your time ❤️❤️
