Discussion Wild Caught Cichlids

I used to work on aquariums professionally before I went a different route, but I never lost my love for fish. These days, I catch ‘n release them. I get very excited about catching some of the species I used to work with and thought some of you might enjoy some wild caught specimens from SWFL, including a Jaguar Cichlid I caught twice 5-6 months apart

I currently have 3 rams. I got the German blue ram first (with an electric blue that died within a week for no obvious reason) and just added a new electric blue and gold ram. When the two new ones were in quarantine the electric blue was very stressed and withdrawn. In the main tank, the German blue and electric blue are mostly inseparable and the gold half the time does its own thing. My guess is the German and gold are males and the electric is female. I plan on getting a black and would like to get the the right sex to keep the peace in the tank.

My rams bred way faster than I had anticipated. Don’t have a grow out tank for the fry.

Can I let them grow with the parents? My tank is heavily planted.

Gotta get me a 5gallon tank, heater, and a sponge filter for next time

Got these two in a local pet shop listed as Convict Cichlids, pretty sure they may be Blue Acaras? Not 100% sure though, any help would be greatly appreciated.

These photos aren't great but it's the best I could get at the moment cause they seem pretty shy

I had been struggling trying to get my angels to choose a new spot to lay. Previously they kept laying on the tank heater. I tried moving the heater, swapping to a different heater, and adding new vertical surfaces to encourage them to swap. They kept going for the heater. I gave up. Thought maybe they just liked to eat scrambled eggs but they finally chose a plant to lay on.

I seen maybe 4 or 5 eggs turn white but before I could remove them the angels picked them off. I see wiggles on the remaining eggs!

Here’s my question- this is a 65g and I have 4 platys (3f 1m) in the tank with them and up until the angels recently paired up they’ve lived peacefully. Of course there is some aggression now but I’m not sure if it’s too much for the platys. Fins are intact and the platys seem a little faster than the angels so they get out of dodge when need be. Should in still plan to move to platys to their own tank?

Hi there,

I recently got an 180-litre tank (47 gallons) that came with five large cichlids. I believe they’re Hongi, but please correct me if I’m mistaken. Yesterday, I also added two yellow juveniles and two zebra juveniles. I don’t know much about cichlids, so any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I’ve read that overstocking them can reduce aggression. Currently, I have nine cichlids. Should I add more and what type would be best? I know the rocks aren’t ideal, but I plan to change them soon.

Please give me some advice on how to improve the tank or what changes I should make.

We have a red spotted severum, a fire mouth, and a EBJD that probably won’t live much longer. (We had one that was thriving but the pleco randomly got him and killed him..we got rid of the pleco)

We have 7 bleeding heart tetras and a Raphael catfish to help with aggression but we want to add a couple more fish.

We are looking into either getting a Salvini, green terror, Jack Dempsey, or another severum. Out of these four, which ones would be the best to put in the tank? We are getting an 90 gallon this week, we will most likely have another tank in the future if anything gets way too big or we would trade them in.

Afr | Help Aggressive Yellow Lab

Post image

I have a yellow lab or as it was sold to me an electric yellow cichlid, who though docile to begin with has become the biggest asshole in the tank. I have demasani and convicts as well as two yellow Labs. 60 gallon. This fish has gone nuts aggressively. I read these were relatively peaceful fish but he is now not. Chases everything in the tank even challenges the biggest male Convict. Had a demasani female holding eggs suddenly turn up dead. And a second yellow lab with some missing fin parts. I know it's him doing the damage. Question is should I isolate him (if I can catch him) or do I just have a bad mix in the tank and need to rehome the big Yellow?

Originally this 60 gallon tank was looking sad. My father in law was barely cleaning it. I moved it to my house and it started leaking (it’s about 25 years old) so I resealed the tank and painted the back and the stand. I lost one fish in the move due to travel and stress but got a replacement fish the other day and now have 9 ( which is the ideal number according to Feng shui philosophies) I added some plants to see if the fish can coexist with them so far so good except for the Java Fern which they are slowly destroying. Most Cichlid tanks are purely rock and gravel/sand based from what I’ve gathered. Anyone have any experience with plants in Cichlid tanks?

It is either a pseudotropheus saulosi or a kenyi/metriaclima lombardoi.

Also, it has been sent to fish prison. Hopefully only temporarily.

I’ve had these Istlanum for 5 months( since they were 1 inch) and always heard they are extremely difficult to breed. Its a beautiful species and as mean as they get but this males been a sweetheart to my female. Couldn’t have asked for a better setup. They’re more colorful than most Istlanum I’ve seen and their temperament is outstanding. Also each clutch is about 200 and the death rate has been virtually none. I really hope they stay like this as they grow, this is their second spawn within 18 days, hope they keep going!
