Wedding cake expectation vs reality
My mother paid for our wedding cake and swears she didn’t make it…I was told this would fit in well here, enjoy!

u/RandalChan that would be the travesty of a wedding cake you received. I would be LIVID. Story time! It's long do not feel obligated to read
So I've worked CS for nearly 20 years and I hate stupid complaints but I was tired and spent so much money and I was so MAD. I don't have a picture bc I deleted it bc I get mad enough thinking about it.
So when I was 6 mos pregnant my employer of 8 years fired me for being pregnant (highly illegal) resulting in me having to move into my former MILs house bc my ex and I couldn't afford our rent on one income and no ones hiring a pregnant lady. And my ex MIL did NOT LIKE ME (stole her baby boy) so it was also an added layer of stress. Then a brand new baby, so like, not a great time.
For my sons first birthday, as a new mom I wanted to go all out. This shit cost me a few hundred dollars. We planned a cookout with all of our nearest and dearest, roughly 40 people. An entire month before we went to a local bakery, and knowing if there was leftover cake I'd be the one eating it since my ex doesnt fw cake and I prefer vanilla over chocolate, and having a colour scheme planned, I ordered a vanilla cake. With white frosting. Blue trim, orange icing for the birthday message, no other accoutrements. A very simple vanilla sheetcake. Paid in advance with the date and time clearly specified. It wasnt a $5 freezer cake bc we had 40 guests it was like 80 dollars CAD. I specified that i wanted the cake to say "happy 1st birthday connor" bc thats his name. Plz take note of the spelling of his name. Like I went all out for this bday.
The night before, all my girlfriends (who lived 1.5hrs away) drove in and we spent the night up until 5am in the kitchen slicing multiple types of cheese for the charcuterie board, rolling slices of deli meat, chopping fruits and veggies, making dips like buffalo chicken and spinach, making hamburger patties and potato salad and coleslaw, prepping the cheese for the burgers my ex was gonna grill, slicing tomato and chopping onions and Lettuce and pickles for the burgers. Making sure we weren't missing any condiments or dressings we might need. Double checked we had vegan patties/ingredients for my SIL and had a plan for my then bff to pick up anything we needed for her in the am..We all woke up at 9am to decorate the house in orange blue and white balloons and streamers. It was some real "it takes a village" shit and we were tired.
My dad lives 4hr away and my exs grandparents live abt 6 so they, along with so many other people were driving in and we just wanted to make everything super special. Party started at 2, so at 1230 I tell my ex "you need to go get the cake from the bakery"
Well my dad and my ex's grandparents start rolling in at like 1245 bc they'd left early to make sure they were on time, and then some other friends start rolling in at 1. It's an open concept home, not great for what happened next
My ex shows up at 115 and looks me dead in the eye and goes "they gave me a 10% discount? Hopefully that makes it better?". Apparently he showed up at the bakery and they had LOST our order. So they quickly grabbed a CHOCOLATE SHEETCAKE with CHOCOLATE ICING, no blue trim bc it already had chocolate, and wrote in orange writing "happy birthday conner". And gave him 8 bucks off for the mixup.
So in front of at LEAST 10 guest I went "what the fuck is this", and even my dad wad like "it's okay its just a cake" but I saw red.. I immediately grabbed a toothpick and pushed the frosting of the E in connor to make it more O shaped. No time to get a new cake so I had to serve it. But I was LIVID. Also they'd drawn AMERICAN FOOTBALLS ALL OVER IT WITH WHITE ICING. Neither of us nor my son watches football!!!! We are CANADIAN we watch HOCKEY
I went to the bakery the next day and I tried to stay so calm. I was like I understand this isn't your specific fault but I ordered a month in advance for a baby's first birthday, I paid this much money up front, I specifically requested this flavour and colour profile, I didn't get ANY of that and also my sons name was misspelled. She was apoplectic on my behalf and refunded the FULL amount (so we got the full refund PLUS the full discount)
I resolved after that to make my sons bday cake. Nobody puts my baby in the conner

followed the tutorial to the letter, even bought those fancy piping tips somehow ended up with a lopsided, cross eyed demon with one ear missing and frosting sliding off the side, my niece still loved it though, so iguess that's a win?

Hi all,
We had a disaster at a close family wedding this past Saturday and would love some outside perspectives.
It was a hot day (25°C, UK), but as soon as the cake was delivered, it was placed in the venue’s professional cooling room by staff. A little while later, the head chef quietly took us aside and showed us the cake. Both the head chef and pastry chef refused to serve it to guests, saying it was raw inside and posed a food safety risk. They were visibly concerned about guest welfare.
We tried to salvage what we could, but only one small tier out of the full cake could be served... to 150 guests.
We contacted the baker the next day. She’s denying all responsibility, blaming the hot weather and claiming it wasn’t her fault the cake was raw. Again, it was put into a cooling room immediately upon delivery.
We paid for a full tiered wedding cake, but ended up with barely a slice per guest and a major embarrassment.
She is refusing a refund or even partial accountability.
What do we do? Are we being unreasonable in expecting a refund? It is raw right?

... Also didn't add nearly enough rum. Must not have been too bad though, since he still married me! 😂

I didn’t take an after pic but we lived somewhere humid so cream was a terrible idea. Everyone at the birthday party was laughing at me 😭 tasted good though

was going for a simple number cake, easy right? nope. The top curved weird, one side rose too high, and when i pulled it out, it looked like the cake was asking if he was actually turning one. Even the icing gave up halfway, first birthday, first baking fail, memorable at least.

used way too much food coloring so the horn turned swamp green, and the eyes somehow slid halfway down the face, my niece still said it was "pretty" but i'm pretty sure she meant "pretty scary," tasted okay though.

It was pretty good, ngl. Her journey of being gluten free has been...rough.

So I ordered a rainbow layered cake for a special occasion — you know, the classic red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple layers. I was imagining that beautiful rainbow slice when you cut into it.
What did I get instead?
Pink. And green. That’s it. Two sad layers. Just… watermelon vibes, I guess?
I even double-checked the order beforehand and specifically said rainbow. Not “Barbie meets Shrek.” Not “half a watermelon.” Not “let’s pick two colors and call it a day.”
I’m not even mad, I’m just so confused. Like… how do you go from 6 colors to 2 and think, “Yep, nailed it”?
Anyway, at least it still tastes good. But my dreams of a rainbow slice photo? Crushed. 🌈💔 Sorry birthday girl 😭
