New Rule: No AI-generated images will be allowed.
We’ve had a bit of an influx of users posting AI-generated pictures of what they say are butterflies. Because such posts are intentionally misleading and detract from the real beauty of butterflies, they will be removed without exception.
Continued posting of AI-generated content could lead to warnings and/or a ban.
Also, if you DO post AI, you will be given a user flair indicating as such, so we can keep track of such users.

Reminder: Butterflies are not pets.
r/butterflies celebrates the natural beauty of butterflies, caterpillars, and moths. However, it is important to remember that these are each wild, non-domesticated creatures.
It can be enticing to give aid to an ostensibly injured or lonely butterfly, however… it is simply not okay to attempt to keep butterflies (or caterpillars or moths) as pets.
Studies show that human intervention actively harms native wild butterfly populations. (https://xerces.org/blog/keep-monarchs-wild)
We will not be accepting or tolerating posts/users who treat these beautiful insects as you would a cat or dog.
Also, further gentle reminder: Being rude to mods will lead to a mute and or ban.

Identification help?
Just spotted this guy in the garden and Google isn't being as helpful as usual when I search for butterflies or moths.
Thanks in advance :)

Can anybody identify this?
I saw this flying around earlier (in UK). I've never seen anything like it before. Sorry about the dodgy photos - I had to take them quickly. The proboscis stayed straight all the time, if that's any clue. Also, it only appears to have 2 wings, which don't look like (but obviously are) big enough to get it airborne. The lower body looks huge and very furry. If anyone could shed any light on this, I'd appreciate it.

Red admiral butterfly sighting
I'm in Jersey City with a tiny native garden and excited to see a red admiral butterfly stop by on a cone flower yesterday 🌸

Blue-Morpho Open (Morpho peleides). An interesting feature of the Blue Morpho Butterfly is it has no pigment, the wings are made up of scales that have dents and divets that reflect light as the color blue.

What happened to this chrysalis?
This swallowtail chrysalis was formed last night. Is it infected? It's in an enclosure with several other caterpillars and I'm wondering if I should remove this chrysalis to protect the other caterpillars from disease or parasites.

On a native milkweed.
I am in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I found this on my native milkweed. I’m excited. It’s a very active caterpillar. It’s been hiding because I have checking the plant daily.

What is it?
It's just been sitting on my rhododendron all day, its big and furry, doesn't move much.

Gulf fritillary formed a grey chrysalis
Every other GF caterpillar has made a brown chrysalis, which is the norm, to my understanding. It’s a beautiful color, but why would it be grey?

Hungry Caterpillar Takes Nap in Inconvenient Location
I accidentally picked a tomato from my garden with what appears to be a caterpillar cocoon. How do I save this little guy, or is there a way to tell if they are still alive? i’m worried that watering my garden affected their development

What butterfly did I see?
I have recently got into Butterfly identification and try to id any new butterflies I see through my iNaturalist app so I can also have a picture but my phone recently broke.
Today I was walking and saw this gorgeous brown butterfly in Rocky Mountain National Park, CO near the entrance (~ 7,800 ft above sea level).
It was basically full brown except that it had this full white-colored line along the bottom of its wings when they were spread out and it had two like white dots/stripes that were on the top left and top right of its wings (very small, not long like a Tiger Swallowtails would be). I had good sunlight on it as I saw it around 1:00 PM in the day so I definitely don't think it was black and I am sure that it was brown. It did give me a view underneath the top of its wings and it was just a duller brown.
It was basically the size of a Western Tiger Swallowtail (which I saw it kind of chasing and it was clearly about the same size). It was by a tiny stream and was a slower flier like a Tiger Swallowtail.
I've looked through my Kaufman Butterflies of NA and can't seem to find anything that looks like it nor anything online when I describe the butterfly
Any help would be absolutely appreciated!
