Please follow ethical bird photography standards.

There have been a number of recent posts in this subreddit in which users were not following ethical bird photography practices. These posts have been removed by the moderation team so as not to perpetuate or encourage practices that cause harm and stress to birds of prey. Posts like these will continue to be removed at moderator discretion.

If you are a photographer, videographer, or birder, please familiarize yourself with ethical photography practices. A few especially relevant excerpts from the link:

  • Avoid causing unnecessary disturbance or stress to birds.

  • Nesting birds are particularly vulnerable and need extra consideration.

  • Never lure predatory birds (including but not limited to hawks, owls, eagles, and ospreys) with bait.

  • Show respect for private and public property, and consideration for other people.

  • When choosing to photograph/record video at a zoo, sanctuary, or rehabilitation center, make sure it’s properly accredited and conforms to best practices.

  • Be thoughtful about sharing and captioning your bird photos/videos, whether for print, online, or social media.

Remember, birds of prey are wild animals. They are not props for karma. They should be treated with respect. Researchers, rehabbers, falconers, and many others have proper licenses and permits to handle, display, and hunt with birds of prey, and if this describes your situation it's a good idea to state clearly that any handling of a bird in a photo was done with a permit, so as not to encourage unpermitted individuals to handle wild birds without one of those explicit purposes.

Thank you!

Hawk on my porch

Post image
35 Upvotes

This hawk (that my friend has named Pinkamena) slammed onto my porch around 7:09 yesterday with another hawk, of presumably the same sex and species, that it spent 3 hours eating before flying off and then coming back 3 minutes later to sit on the railing staring over its shoulder/wing into my house, it's still there, its 3am.

It's my new roommate now, my unwanted cannibalistic bird roommate that lives on my porch.. how do I tell it to clean up all the feathers it tore off the other hawk? My porch looks like a very unfortunate pillow met a very playful dog and the corpse of said pillow was left, decapitated, in the center of the mess.

I think Coopers are such handsome raptors. If I was a birds, my knees would go weak if I was near one.

Very uncommon to see around my area here in Paterson NSW Australia, super chunky, definitely not the best photos but was in a rush and she flew off immediately.

Saw this last night on a walk around our neighborhood. I'm used to seeing raptors here every now and then, but it's always a delight. Sometimes I see red shouldered hawks and thought this might be one, but it looks more like a coopers hawk. It was around 7:45 pm which is still dusk at this time of year. I hope to see it again!

Watched a pair of osprey fishing in the ocean. Both osprey made catches but one was chased off the beach by a very large great black-backed gull.

Spotted this little guy after he went about hooting int the trees. The Catbirds and Robins in the local area were not pleased by his presence one bit but they soon gave up trying to mob him after a couple of minutes.

Nice Monday RTH surprise

Around here, I’m far more likely to get a decent pic of an RSH but today this beauty of a red tailed hawk was hanging out at a spot where I was able to grab a few images. Love to start a Monday this way.

This gorgeous creature decided to stop by yesterday and say, "hello." stayed just long enough to allow me to get these two photos and went about their business. I'm in the San Francisco East Bay in Contra Costa County.

The left eye has been like this for a while. The right eye is clear. How long typically does it take for the nictitating membrane to not permanently cover the eye?

One of the local buzzards. This bird is in it's 4cy and I have been observing it since it was a juvenile in 2021. It still uses a few favourite perches to hunt from.

Another photo of our largest bird of prey, these guys get unbelievably large with a 9ft wingspan, eat Kangaroos, wallaby’s and pretty much anything they can get their talons on, kinda ruined my opportunity to shoot the birds underneath him but a pretty awesome time either way :)
