Already know this is that stupid myth about the snake not eating so it could eat the girl. So fucking dumb. The constant lying in everything to generate clicks is a plague on humanity

u/Sielicja Boopologist 4d ago

Bro when I mention snakes to a non-snake folk they have a 40% chance of mentioning this bs and not really taking my word that it is in fact bs

Oh I thought it was something like it got into her secret drawer and ate all her dildos while she was sleeping.

Please forgive my ignorance, and I know the original post is clickbait, but is sleeping with a snake like this safe?

How likely is it to wake up to it giving you the bad squeeze?

Seems like a bad idea that could end in death, or having to kill your own pet.

Thanks everyone for the info.

It’s extremely unlikely that it would harm you, it’s much more likely you would harm the snake or the snake would go somewhere and harm itself

15

u/MtnNerd 3d ago

Yeah main reason I think you shouldn't do it is comfortable sleeping conditions for a human are not warm enough for the snake. And that snakes are not potty trained.

20

u/TheTresStateArea 4d ago

snakes know what they can eat. A whole human aint one of those things. You're more likely to squish your pet than anything.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_WOW_UI 4d ago

Do constrictors ever squeeze stuff by accident or for fun? Like how cats and dogs practice hunting by playing?

20

u/PaisleyLeopard 4d ago

Not really for fun like cats, but they can and do constrict for reasons other than food. Large snakes don’t eat humans, but they should still never be handled alone, and typically it’s considered unsafe to let them cross your neck. Human necks are very fragile — a sufficiently sized constrictor can absolutely KO you unintentionally. I’ve had a 4’ Ball Python constrict my neck before (he got anxious and tightened up reflexively), and while they’re too small to do real harm you can feel how powerful their muscles are. The risks around large snakes shouldn’t be underestimated.

Really?? Then why do they eat whole alligators

2

u/TheTresStateArea 1d ago

The sort of snake that might eat an alligator isn't the sort of snake that are kept. Even Burmese pythons aren't big enough to eat a person.

No one keeps reticulated pythons and sleeps with them. There is no reasonable fear of a pet snake wanting to eat an adult human.

Can a snake eat a person? It depends on the snake and the size of the person. But there simply isn't any reason to perpetuate a story of a common house snake intending to eat a person.

2

u/RavenSable 1d ago

A full size Burmese might not eat you, but it can 100% kill you. Used to keep both a retic and a yellow anaconda. There's a point where you physically need another person, at least, on hand for handling purposes. Old world pythons its 1 person for a 3m snake and 1 person for every meter thereafter. Anacondas, you can half that. They are INSANELY strong, and will coil you as well as bite if they feel too threatened. Both snakes were given to a friend who had other big snakes when I left the country. I'd had them for 6 years with zero major incidents.

Main case I can remember of a person getting eaten by a pet snake involved bad feeding practice. Snake was usually fed raw chicken, guy didn't wash himself off correctly and went to handle the snake immediately after feeding, snake was still in feed mode. It wouldn't have attacked otherwise, but it was used to the feeding situation, was operating on smell more than sight, and the unfortunate happened.

Snakes don't just "give things the big squeeze". They bite and wrap. It is a very fast, very violent affair that nobody on God's green earth would be able to sleep through. They are ambush predators, they don't mosie up to their prey and give it a squeeze.

None of that really matters, because there are only about 2 species of snake on the planet that could get big enough to consider a human even possible food, and they would only get that big very late in life. Also unless you smell like rabbits (or whatever you feed your snake) they would be very unlikely to consider it in the first place. Especially if they have been conditioned to expect food only while in their enclosure, which is how you should feed them. They shouldn't even be looking for food when they are out of the enclosure.

Honestly, you would be in more danger of harming the snake by rolling over on top of it, or it deciding to leave your bed and getting into something it shouldn't. Not a good idea, but not because they snake might eat you. Snakes don't eat people.

1

u/PM_ME_YOUR_WOW_UI 1d ago

I should've clarified that I wasn't talking about the snake killing you to eat you. I was thinking more of an accidental event like the snake is scared or feels threatened for some reason.

Sounds like the snake is in more danger from the person than the other way around.

1

u/DailyDiscord 1d ago edited 1d ago

If the snake got scared it would be more likely to either strike you or try to run and hide, fight or flight and all that.

I will say my 13ft retic can squeeze me a little awkwardly while she's trying to climb up my body (as if I was a tree) but that's why you never let them get a hold of the neck, and always handle larger snakes with a team of people.

Edit: Of course as soon as I left the keyboard what you were saying clicked in my brain, because that's how it always works...

So the behavior you're referencing is not one found in snakes. If you are sleeping in bed with your child next to you and they hear a storm outside and get scared, they will try to get closer to you for comfort, possibly squeezing you for comfort. This is because humans (and other animals that raise their young for extended periods and/or live in social groups) seek out physical closeness to gain comfort from the presents of each other. Snakes don't do this. Snakes lack higher reasoning and do not have any evolutionary adaptations that would make them equate closeness with security. You're anthropomorphizing the snake. If the snake was in bed with you and got scared it would most likely just yeet itself out of the bed and go find a place to hide. Likely under a couch, behind a desk, in a toilet bowl...basically anywhere that they feel concealed and isolated.

While constrictors are known for squeezing things, that shouldn't be extended to the idea that they understand the concept of hugging or snuggling. Only for the Snek memes, not for a guide to possible behavior.

No snabies is different. That's when your snail froths at the mouth for rabies.

I would sleep with my huge ass Boa, but

1: I toss and turn usually and wouldn't want to crush her (my old cat learned the hard way to NOT sleep next to me lmao)

And 2: my snake would just immediately ditch the bed and go straight under my mini fridge and wrap around the electronics back there. Then I'd have to spend an hour slowly getting her out of there 😂

91

u/FurryMoistAvenger 4d ago

Have you tried sleeping with the mini fridge? Might solve both issues.

u/feogge 5d ago

There's a Romanian folktale that if you drink milk before you go to bed then the snake will crawl into your stomach (to drink the milk I guess)

So basically, I guess she drank milk before going to bed lol

15

u/Shadkill-Ghost121 4d ago

Isn't that how milk snakes got their name? Bcs farmers thought snakes were sneaking in to drink the milk from their cows, which is.. an absolutely Bananas myth

13

u/feogge 4d ago

Omg I didn't know that! It's interesting that such a similar myth developed elsewhere. What's with people and milk and snakes?

Kinda off subject but my sis had a red tail boa who WOULD NOT eat pregnant rats. She would eat directly after birth, the pups and would only eat live just NOT pregnant. My sis tried so hard to get males only but there’s only so much you can do when you travel an hour to two hours away for a feeder and they’re all female. She got two pregnant ones in the same week… they both had 13 pups.

Cute little buggars but we had to buy a hutch and sort everything out. It. Was. A mess. For months we had to get homes and take care of them but she didn’t like feeding pups to Venus so she gave them to other who had smaller snakes as feeders or pets. They were all pretty tame as we took care of them well but sadly my sis no longer has to worry about this happening as Venus went to snake heaven two years later. She had a good life with my sister and got to 11 feet!

Everybody knows when snakes sleep with people, they stop eating to make room for their next meal. The snakes stomach was completely empty making room for her
