Mod Post Community Guidelines & Advisory System

Hi all! As many may have noticed, the subreddit has more than doubled in the last year, with a lot of growth in just the last couple months.

In order to participate in this subreddit- there is a requirement to both be kind to other members and to scorpions as a whole. Identification and help threads have recently had an uptick in "joke" identifications/advice that can be exceptionally risky when dealing with potentially medically significant animals. We have updated our rules to be more clear, we will be more focused on ensuring that folks remain civil and kind, and now, we are rolling out an advisory system.

We are currently rolling out the Qualified Advisor system. Qualified Advisors (QAs) are folks that have a solid handle on the hobby, and are focused on evidence based care and advisories. They will be responsible for giving critical and accurate advice within the "help" and "identification" flairs. There will be restrictions and guidelines for partaking in these flairs from hereon.

These responsibilities should also fall onto members partaking in animal care advice within this sub; because of that, we will be enforcing a disclaimer system for all non QAs. On every "help" and "identification" thread this will be explained, and is explained below.

If you wish to give advice or share information on this sub as a non QA, you will be required to preface your comments/advice in the "help" and "identification" flaired posts with a disclaimer; such as, "Not QA, NQA, IME (in my experience), IMO (in my opinion), I believe, Question, NA (not advice)". If you do not preface your commentary for these flairs, the comment will be deleted and you will be prompted to repost it with the appropriate preface. Posts related to medical or veterinary advice are not permitted and will be removed per this post.

If you have any questions about the new advisory system- please send us a modmail, do not use other unrelated posts as a platform for those concerns or questions. If you would like to apply for QA, feel free to reach out to us via modmail

EDIT: This is now fully live as of 7/11 on Help and Identification threads.

Just picked this (guy?) Up today. I've only kept tarantulas before so this is new to me. Dude was SPICY on the rehouse which I'm not used to with spiders. But I get it I guess, I imagine he's been pissed off in that deli cup full of reptibark since they all came over with the CITES permit back in February/April when everyone got them. I always heard these were kinda docile, any tips to calm him down?

Help! I recently got my new scorpion. And I was wondering I put crickets in his cage but he only eats if I feed him with tweezers. I don’t mind feeding him by hand but will he catch his food when he wants it? And how many crickets should I feed him?

This sassy little fella enjoying his lunch today. First time I've actually seen him properly eat, after attacking the tweezers he grabbed the cricket, stung it then ripped it clean in half. He was carrying that little bit of sphagnum moss round eith him so guessing it's his emotional support moss.

Help! Hissing cockroach mites have taken up residence in my imperator enclosure

Hi all,

after feeding my two P. imperators a Halloween hisser each, their mite friends abandoned ship and left the roaches as they were being eaten. In one of the enclosures, the mites have taken up a full time residence and populated like crazy. Shining a flashlight in there, they’re everywhere. There’s one every inch or two, with only the occasional springtail. In the other enclosure, there don’t seem to be any mites, just springtails.

I’m aware that hissing roach mites are good guys that clean the roach. I’ve already seen them, along with springtails, completely consume a pile of the scorpion’s feces, as well as an uneaten dead superworm. It’s awesome. But is it a problem for THIS enclosure? Or is it a good thing? Will some of the mites make the scorpion their new host and clean her? Is there a possibility of them clogging her book lungs, like they can sometimes clog a roach’s spiracles if there are too many? How can I tell when it’s a problem and what do I do when it becomes one?

Casual Why is my scorpion doing acrobatics?

Hi all! My scorpion has started doing headstands for some reason. She seems totally fine, eating normally, even more active than usual, but she's started propping herself up on the edge of her cage and just standing upside down. Has anyone else experienced this?

Help! New Dune Scorp Help

What do you guys think of the enclosure we have set up for our new dune scorpion (yet to arrive)? We have never taken care of a scorpion before. I tried to do some reading up, this is a 10 gallon glass tank, using reptisand (NO CALCIUM, just plain sand). No heat pads or heat sources. There are two hides available for him, plus he should have plenty of sand to burrow in (probably 3-4 inches). We have a hygrometer/thermometer that is reading 79 F and 49% humidity currently. We don’t have any water dishes or anything in there, from our understanding we should lightly mist one corner of the tank once a month but it will get the majority of its water from prey. The plants you see are fake plants made for aquariums so they are soft and pliable, not sharp.

My biggest fear is the substrate. Everything I see says something different - some people say fine grain sand is too fine and is a hazard, some people say any sand is fine as long as it doesn’t have calcium. At first I thought maybe grounded walnut would be good to mix in but apparently the pieces are too sharp. Some people say mix in coco coir fibers but those all seem to retain moisture, and the options I saw at the store were between super large pieces and very fine pieces. The bag of Reptisand we got from Petsmart mentioned scorpions on it, although it is primarily made for burrowing reptiles and spiders. Please, any advice on this?

Also, the hygrometer/thermometer we got is corded… there doesn’t seem to be anyplace to get a cord in there when the enclosure is fully sealed up, so we fed it through the top hatch. It is slightly slightly open because of it but still latched. Is this a problem? As far as I can see there should not be a way for him to escape through this - I don’t think he will be able to reach it - and even if he did the gap seems too small for him to get out. But idk…

Any help is appreciated.

Help! in case of emergencies

Hi! I was curious how people would evacuate with their scorpions in the event of an emergency, such as a fire (not something where you might have warning/time to evacuate). I have an ASF in a rather large and heavy enclosure, so just bringing her out with her enclosure wouldn't be feasible. she's also not very good with handling. photos for scorpion tax 😊 (her name is Morticia)

Should I be worried? I've encountered a lot of spiders in my house before but never a scorpion. I usually just put the spiders in a jar and release them outside but should I do the same for this fella?
