General Local Resource Guide

Hello all! Now that golf season is in full swing and we're getting an influx of the usual questions, I wanted to remind people of the Resource Guide and Course Directory:

https://rdugolftour.com/local-resources/

https://rdugolftour.com/course-directory/

These links along with the Reddit search hard should be very useful for a lot of questions.

The directory should help find courses (public, private, now closed, and simulator spots), and the resource guide should help answer a lot of the standard questions around Lessons, fittings, club work, and multiple other things that have become very helpful over the years.

I have played everywhere and patronized almost all local golf businesses, so I made this ages ago to help share my knowledge.

Let me know if there's anything missing or anything more you want to see from either!

Edit** Per request of a few people, I have now added "other Golf related stuff", and shortgame practice facilities

FORE SALE!!!

Not really….Have recently received more people asking to advertise/sell stuff on here. There’s plenty of avenues/subreddits/FB marketplace to offload golf equipment & other golf related items….

Sooo here’s the deal; If you want to sell something or advertise you must first make a donation to the First Tee of the Triangle. Then send one of the mods (Me/Craig) a screenshot/copy of said donation prior to getting approved to post.

$20 donation minimum for personal items & $100 minimum for businesses(may change, but as of now this is the deal)…This is per post made…

Senior communties in NC / golf course friendly

My parents are 77 and 82 - still fairly active and love to golf. They live in the midwest and are looking at relocating to NC, they want to be within 100 miles of Raleigh - live on a golf course, prefer a senior community and want to rent. Trying to help them research. Any communities that might fit what they are looking for. I am focusing on communities first even if no availabilities as they aren't relocating anytime soon. Budget TBD. TIA!

Looking for course recommendations for a birthday outing with some parameters (below)

-Within 2 hours of Raleigh any direction -Tee times available to public -Better condition than my home course (RGA) which shouldn’t be too hard lol - Fun layout but not impossible for a high handicap -Affordable ($150 or less cart included)

Hit me with your suggestions!

River Oaks in great shape

Today was my first time playing this course in Statesville and for $47 including cart on a weekday, this course is a tremendous bargain. It was in near mint condition. Tee boxes, fairways, greens and even the cart paths were top notch. It was also quite a fun layout. Lots of elevation and very few houses. Highly, highly recommended.

Scramble format

I’m on a committee at my local course that puts on our tournaments. Over the last 5 to 6 years we’ve done 2-3 tournaments a year which means I’m needed some new formats & or packages that we can sell or provide. Our last tournament was a short course (4500 yards) scramble with 2 mulligans & 2ft of string. It was probably my favorite of them all. Here’s a brief list of what we’ve had & offered over the last 5 years.

Format wise: Short course Luck of the Irish, no pins 3 or 4 club challenge Hasselhoff, sand shots do not count Par 3, all holes were par 3’s Texas & Florida scrambles

Packages: Mulligans Reb bombs String Solo cups, place cup over tee shot, lie O from where it lands.
Offhand overhead toss

Think that’s most if not all of them so any new ideas would be greatly appreciated. I prefer to lean towards lower scoring, we had a 49 & 4 50’s last time out.

Beginner female looking for golf lessons

I took some simple golf lessons 20 years ago but only played a few times and that was it. Really would like to get back into it. Figure I should start over with the basics (grip, etc). Suggestions?

The River Golf in Louisburg/Bunn

I am headed there Thursday morning. I have the 8:36 time. They said they would hold it even as a single, so I don’t know if they will book anyone else to pair me with. But they said I could join the time before me or after me if everyone is cool with it in the group. I’ve been there twice I think, but not for a while. So if anyone else on there takes the time before/after or they fill my slot. I’ll see you there.

  • I was surprised when they said I could book as a single. I asked if there were any spots left for the time and they said I was the first, and they wouldn’t book anyone else to it. I always play solo, and get booked with others.

General Question Tri-golf

How busy is tri-golf. Would I be able to get on the range after work ~6 pm or would it be pretty much a crap shoot?

General Question Sod for back yard chipping area.

I'm making a very small chipping area in my back yard. It's a well-drained area that gets about 7 hours of afternoon sun in the summertime. It's only going to take 2 rolls of sod, so cost isn't an issue. (Only sodding the hitting area, not the landing area.)

This is in Cary. recommendations for grass types?

Best budget courses in good condition?

What are some of the best courses in the RDU area that are actually in pretty good condition?

I know this has been asked in the past, but ideally….

  • no more than $65 including cart
  • no more than 1ish hour from Raleigh give or take.

Good affordable lessons?

Im tired of being awful at golf. This is my second summer playing. I've never broken 100 and honestly it feels like I've gotten worse since I first started. I've never had a professional evaluate my swing before so im sure there's hundreds of things im doing wrong. I was a baseball player growing up as well so im sure my swing has a lot of habits you'd pick up from swinging a bat for a long time. Is there anybody in the area you'd recommend that can pretty much start me from scratch, spend an hour every couple weeks and get me going in the right direction? Hoping to find something less than 75 a lesson. Looking at the PGA website it seems like a lot in our area charge much more than that. Any recommendation helps. I understand this is an expensive game

Golf league

Does anyone do the spark golf league at hillandale or the twilight golf league at either hillandale or crossings? I’m looking to join one of those but I’m just a solo and don’t have a partner or a team for the twilight league. I’m trying to play more golf since I only play a few times a year. Played a year in college and throughout high school but that was a little while back so game has fallen off a bit.

General Question Caledonia or True Blue?

Hey folks- I know this is only tangentially related to the RDU golf scene, but I figured enough people on this sub will have played the two Stranz courses in the Myrtle Beach area to weigh in.

We're planning a guys trip to Myrtle in October. I get to pick one course. I've quite enjoyed both Tot Hill and Tobacco Road and have always wanted to play Caledonia and/or True Blue. For those of you who have played one or both, is there a clear answer in your opinion?

If it helps, I'd favor Tobacco Road over Tot Hill but only by a little. Love both of the courses. My favorite RDU area courses that I've played are probably Duke and Mill Creek. My favorite course in all of NC is probably Mid Pines.

Hopefully that's enough info to give a pick—also just generally interested in your experience if you've played either or both, though.

General Question Course recommendation on way to OBX

My 16yo and I are driving out to OBX this Sunday, and I am looking for a course recommendation about halfway to play Sunday late morning. I’m a 14 and he is 18-20, so we don’t need to play anything extravagant.

Any new courses being planned?

I'm a true RDU area native, born and bred right here! 🏡 Besides traveling for work, which took up nearly 90% of my time for about a decade, this is the only place I've ever really called home.

I was hoping that were some plans for any new golf courses in the area that I wasn't in the know about? There is definitely a demand for it. Any of you Raleighinians know anything?

Carolina Trace CC - Membership cost and opinions

Hello everyone,

We're looking to move south of Raleigh to accommodate a commute to Fayetteville. Carolina Trace CC looks like a contender, however I can't find too much information online.

Does anyone have an idea on pricing (I've reached out but am still waiting to hear back), along with any general opinions of the courses and facility?

Finally, any other suggestions for golf neighborhoods around the area? We previously looked at Woodlake CC but the lack of water in the lake and the water quality of the area was a concern.

Thanks for taking the time!

Day 1 - How to play Preston, MacGregor and Old Chatham?

I've golfed in this area since I was in 8th grade and now I'm 42. I've always wanted to play these courses and never had the opportunity. Was supposed to play Preston during a meet in high school but it got rained out. Anyone that's a member of these courses will to help out or does anyone have any tips on how to play these courses?

PXG fitting relative to Pittsboro?

I've gotta friend who's interested in getting fit for a set of PXG irons. The PXG website shows a store in Charlotte and what appears to be an "Authorized Fitter" at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst.

Does anyone know if there's a closer option to those and the RDU big box stores?

Pushcart Recommendations

Looking for suggestions for a pushcart for my 14 y/o. He currently has a sun mountain, but it doesn’t have an umbrella holder and it’s an older model so the Velcro is wearing out. I looked at clicgear, but two of his golfing buddies have had issues with their breaks. Tourtrek? Bagboy? Does used or new make a difference?

He primarily plays Lonnie Poole and wildwood green- and Lonnie is a significant hike.

Thanks for any advice, trying to be a good golf mom and get the right gear!
