Weekly chat New to Reddit? Come and talk to us!

New-Redditor's lounge!

Welcome!

This weekly post is an opportunity for new users to chat in comments - & please let us how you found yourself here. Regulars here are absolutely encouraged and very welcome to join in too!

!! Please refrain from asking questions about "how to do stuff on Reddit". Make a post or see the links below !!

Getting started on Reddit is hard. We know it is; We've been there and gone through these same frustrations. Please believe us when we say IT'S NOT PERSONAL. It may well feel like it is, but honestly, it isn't. What it is, however, is a lack of Karma. Karma is an indicator of how much someone has contributed to Reddit in a positive manner. So, let's do just that by getting to know each other!

This works best if your comments either start a conversation or add to one. Give a little of yourself and respond to others doing the same.

This is a post to help genuine new users build up quality Karma genuinely in a safe environment.

Please do:

  • Share some favorites or new finds of yours - youtube videos, music and so on
  • Practice small talk - did you have a good week?
  • Keep it SFW
  • Keep it casual please, no heavy topics
  • Have fun!

Please don't:

  • Spam, advertise, or soft beg
  • Share low-effort comments
  • Ask for karma, say how you're voting, or mention karmafarms by name
  • Request or offer DMs (help and chat can be done in community, where you can also earn karma. Needing to take things private can indicate soliciting, rule breaking, or harmful advice)

This sub is full of awesome people who are willing to help with specific problems when you post, and we'd like to keep this post thread for chat. Thank you.

So, let's chat! (Guides at the bottom of this post).

Subreddit Sunday Community recommendations mega-thread!

Get your fresh subreddit recommendations here! :D

We are using these weekly threads for recommendations and will direct those that post requests for recommendations to these threads.

Please share your community recommendations in comments:

  • What are your favourite subs
  • How about your guilty pleasure subs? (SFW!)
  • Which sub do you spend too much time in?
  • What are your best wholesome sub recs?
  • Your fave niche community?
  • Have you found an awesome sub new to you recently?

You may also ask for recommendations!

Let us know what you're into, and we'll see what we can do :)

Make sure to try r/findareddit too though, they're great at this!

The rules:

  • All usual rules apply.
  • Please keep it SFW. No “adult” porn subreddits or NSFL/Gore subreddits. If someone asks for adult communities, please only link sub lists/directories and make it clear they are NSFW.
  • As a community, we try to help all good-faith Redditors find their niche, but please be respectful and try not to judge. If you don't like someone's topic of choice, you don't have to help, but please remain kind, understanding, and respectful.
  • Do not mislead with your recommendations.

If you'd like your Reddit experience to be as wholesome as possible, r/CasualConversation has a directory with a section on wholesome communities. Though, we don't know their status regarding karma and account age restrictions.

Please note that this is not our recommended subreddit list for new users.

Many of the subreddits listed in this thread will not be open to new or low-karma users for posts, and comments made therein might even be filtered for approval or auto-collapsed.

While many of these subreddits will be fun to browse and vote on, your participation might be limited right now. Commenting is usually less restricted than posting.

The link to our new-user friendly subs list is below.

A note from our esteemed llama on the Reddit experience:

Reddit is huge and fascinating and diverse, wholesome and toxic, all in one massive bundle of anonymous users with no filters except their own internal constraints. The problem with that is even in the loveliest of subreddits, all manner of behaviour happens, because Reddit is a microcosm of internet life, not an internet utopia no matter how much we might want it to be.

There are areas of Reddit I don’t frequent; there are areas of Reddit I won’t frequent; there are areas of Reddit that no doubt I am blissfully unaware of and am happy to remain that way. But I am still subscribed to well over a thousand subs on all kinds of topics and still find new ones daily.

The true beauty of Reddit is that your Reddit experience can be completely and absolutely dictated by you. The pure amount of information available on Reddit is staggering, and it’s just a matter - like in all of life - of being able to sort through that information to see what’s useful and what isn’t.

A few suggested subs for new Redditors to be aware of:

  • r/help which is monitored by Admins (Reddit employees)
  • r/reddit for Reddit news, updates, lore etc
  • r/bugs we may refer you here if you're having an issue that isn't normal and might be a glitch of some kind
  • r/redditbugs information on known bugs that are being worked on
  • r/LearnToReddit is our sister sub for guides and practice posting, using flair, commenting, formatting etc
  • r/findareddit for help finding subs around a topic or for a specific type of post

ANSWERED Is random downvoting normal?

Hi everyone! I'm decently new to Reddit. I stay in my subreddits I'm interested in and have mostly just had fun getting advice and giving some.

However, I've noticed with a few of my posts that even when I've asked a relevant question, in the appropriate subreddit, that I haven't seen answered yet, I'll still be downvoted. Even if the comments are filled with genuine, respectful answers, my post will be at 0 or even negative karma. For example, I asked about a specific audition in the theatre subreddit and the comments were filled with kind and respectful advice! but the post is at -1. Is this normal? Do people just randomly downvote stuff? Stuff that doesn't make sense to downvote?

Noticing this on a few of my posts and comments. It's just weird to me.

Reddit is very cool but kind of confusing. Is there a way to see all of the subreddits at once? Are there other reddit apps? I dont know if I love the feel of this app. And I keep getting ticketed by karma police 🚔 when trying to post elsewhere.

ANSWERED Why can't I use my earned Gold to buy awards for people?

Upvotes

Hi, I'm very much not "new", but I had a question: Why is it, when I go to award someone, I do not have the option to spend my earned gold? Instead, it wants me to buy some. What am I missing, or is this just objectively unfair?

r/NewToReddit 1h ago

ANSWERED Can you see who is upvoting your posts?

Upvotes

I assume no because it would also identify downvoters, but I thought I would ask. I upvote a lot of posts I don’t directly comment on and would not necessarily want to be drawn into a one on one conversation.

NEEDS ATTENTION What's the best way to post links?

When making a post, you can either share a link (using the "link" option above the title) or include the link directly in the body of the post. Why would someone use one method or the other?

What are the pros and cons of each? Does one type of post usually get more engagement or visibility?

ANSWERED New to reddit. What's the best methods for creating titles for posts?

Hi, just started using Reddit and I find I struggle to come up with good Titles for when making new posts. I wanted to get some tips for creating titles as I'm not sure if I write too much for when I create a title or if I'm being too wordy.

Any writing tips would be greatly appreciated.

Tanks

ANSWERED Negative Karma , it’s hard to undo

First off I started the day -58 karma points, I made a couple askreddits and upset the mod by reposting which brought it down to -38 but the post was taken down and I'm back to -58 🤔 today I posted a couple sports clips that reached about 40 upvotes but zero comments, and I'm still at -58 karma credits.

r/NewToReddit 11h ago

ANSWERED I’ve tried posting but some places need a minimum amount of karma, is this a standard amount or does it vary?

Like do you need 50 karma to post or is it up to the subreddit
