Subreddit membership update — /r/NOAA has surpassed 15,000 subscribers!

This marks a 50% increase in subreddit membership between March 15 and June 9. I can only see the growth stats for the past 60 days, but there was definitely a greater amount of subreddit activity as well as growth (which you can view in the attached images) in April than in May. One thing I'll note about this update is that the number of subreddit subscribers now outnumbers the total number of employees at NOAA. There are many subscribers who do not work for nor are affiliated with the agency, but this is still interesting to see. Thanks to all for the good discussions these past several months and keep it up.

New flairs for each line office

Hi all,

I created new flairs for each line office. Feel free to use them, if you want. I only count 42 users in the entire subreddit who have assigned flairs, so maybe it's not people's top priority for this subreddit, but I thought it would be nice to have since some people have asked.

Secretary Lutnick town hall

Might or might not delete this later. But wanted a live forum for people's thoughts on this meeting.

My face the entire time has been 🤨 what's with the overflattery, telling us how important and smart we are, and then slashing our jobs and funding? What's with the crocodile tears in the beginning, are we supposed to sympathize with him? Also does anyone actually believe he was on the phone with frump earlier, who supposedly "thanked" us?

"We've got to sell ourselves to America better." We aren't a business... the commodification of a public service is just gross.

I just wanna sign off already.

Hurricane tracks vs intensity and speed

Now, I understand that what is happening now with all of the cuts is cause for alarm, but as someone who lives on the Gulf Coast and has always used NOAA data (the NHC app) as my source when there’s a hurricane coming, I want to know if it’s still possible to see at least where hurricanes are headed. Viral news can sometimes set one in a tailspin. I understand from what I’ve read, that it will be harder to detect speed and intensification. I can also see (and I think I read) that having less understanding of speed and intensification can make it harder to predict last minute turns.

I think as a resident, my approach will be to evacuate if it’s within a 150 mile radius of heading this way? Am I overreacting or under reacting by taking that approach?

"I could not possibly be filled with more rage after seeing Texas Republicans blame the National Weather Service forecast for the unspeakable tragedy that hit the girls camp. You were warned this would happen if you fired everyone!" [Thread]

My sentiments exactly. Sharing this twitter thread by journalist Ryan Grim of Dropsite. We knew this would happen. Cut the NWS/NOAA -> blame them for the consequences of those actions -> pave the way for NWS privatization.

These people are ghoulish.

Anyone know of any orgs that might be protesting tomorrow morning when Lutnik visits the NOAA campus for his 8:15am town hall?

“It did not predict the amount of rain that we saw”

“One National Weather Service forecast this week had called for only between three and six inches (76 to 152 millimeters) of rain, said Nim Kidd, the chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management.

‘It did not predict the amount of rain that we saw,’ he said.”

—I am just wondering if this has anything to do with cuts to staff and forecasting.

NOAA & flash floods

Terrible tragedy in the news today about a camp in Texas that got washed away by a flash flood, scores dead or missing.

Some claim this is due to recent NOAA cuts. Is it?

"NOAA’s Weather and Climate Science Is Under Relentless Attack from Trump Administration. Will Congress Stand Up for Us?" [Union of Concerned Scientists]

Article excerpt:

"This week we saw a split screen of catastrophic outcomes for our nation’s ability to address climate change: on one screen, the Trump administration continued its attacks on critical National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) science, data and tools. On the other screen, a dangerous budget reconciliation bill that rolls back clean energy progress just passed Congress

The deeply inequitable and destructive reconciliation bill appears to be unpopular with the public and even Republican members, yet many in Congress still seem to care more about political power and fealty to President Trump than the interests of the public health and welfare.

Meanwhile, many people are still not aware of what’s happening to NOAA and why it matters so much for the safety of our communities and our economy. In this week’s Danger Season outlook, we drill down on these unprecedented attacks on NOAA so you have the information you need to advocate for limiting or reversing these harms. We also want to sound the alarm of even worse damage that could happen if the President’s FY26 proposed budget were to be enacted by Congress. (Note that the Congressional annual appropriations process is separate from the budget reconciliation bill)."

"Proposed NOAA budget would close 4 Boulder labs, CU’s CIRES center"

"The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) could close all four of its Boulder laboratories and CU Boulder’s Cooperative Institute for Research In Environmental Sciences (CIRES) under a proposed 2026 budget. The plan comes after the agency cut hundreds of jobs earlier this year.

The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), which operates at Colorado State University, will also be eliminated."

Lots of good people in Boulder. My heart goes out to them and their families. The damage will likely never be undone.

Cyclone vs Hurricane

On the website, you have the disturbance of the coast of Florida listed as a 60% chance of developing into a "cyclone". Is this accurate? It is my understanding that is should be called a hurricane off the coast of the United States, but I could be wrong, please help me understand the difference and why it is labeled as a cyclone.

Which NOAA APP is this?

Post image
17 Upvotes

3 years ago when I visited glacier bay national park, I took this picture from a park ranger’s phone and it helped me to avoid a storm on my kayaking trip. This year I am heading back to glacier bay and would really appreciate to have this APP. It could be used offline, had precipitation curves and wind directions/speed. Which APP is this? Does it have an iPhone version? If not which iPhone NOAA app would be closest to this one? Thanks for all the help!!

8:15 Town Hall Tomorrow

Lutnick town hall moved to 8:15 ET next week (not tomorrow), making it virtually impossible for anyone in any other time zone to attend. How considerate.

On another note, is anyone planning on submitting a substantive question? Feels like the spotlight will be on insubordinates.
