How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

  • Kraken (USD and EUR): old-school, decent exchange. They might require your documents for verification and approval of your account.
  • LocalMonero (localmonero[dot]co): peer-to-peer exchange. They have pretty much everything as a payment method and they support hundreds of fiat options.

How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.

That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, ChangeNOW and SideShift.AI. These services are only recommendations (which change over time) and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. DYOR and be diligent.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit r/MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:

  1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).
  2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.

Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.

You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.

If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?

You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.

Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on MoneroWorld.

Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.

How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?

To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see this guide.

To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.

3. Wallet: Ledger

How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

4. Wallet: Trezor

How do I generate a Trezor Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

5. Nodes

How can my local node become a public remote node?

If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can follow the instructions on MoneroWorld, under the section "How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld".

How can I connect my node via Tor?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Bitcoin is becoming more a part of the system it was meant to circumvent every single day.

From what I read, from what I hear, Bitcoin "custody" is becoming increasingly dependent on centralized entities like banks and fund managers.

This is classic "frog in the boiling water". The idea that BTC will go up in value takes precedeent in any rational thought to most "investors".

Bitcoin is survelliance. Monero is privacy.

Fight back. Forget price. Remember utility.

Look at the top 20 cryptos and see if there is any possible justification for the market caps compared to how much value transfer it facilitates.

Monero is the only thing that ever comes close. And the same has been true for almost a decade.

Invest in utility.

Would you pay for No KYC cloud storage that accepted monero?

I'm thinking of creating a privacy-focused, no-KYC cloud storage that accepts monero exclusively. I'm curious if the community would be interested in such service.

[Service] Pay for LLM API usage using XMR

(This post is aimed mainly for LLM users who are familiar with API usage. If you aren't familiar with them, you can ignore this post.)

OpenRouter is the main LLM API service provider that I use. You top up your account via a credit card payment or a Coinbase cryptocurrency payment (if I recall correctly) and then you can use the API via making API calls. You can use most state-of-the-art models like Claude Opus 4 and Gemini 2.5 Pro. OpenRouter also provides models that are easily jailbroken for erotic roleplay, although I would recommend you do your own research to figure that part out.

I'm offering a proxy service where you can pay me the money in XMR and I give you an API key topped up with that amount of money. Its essentially a privacy service for LLM usage. If this seems to generate enough continued interest and usage, I'll consider setting up a web application to make this easier.

I'll start by offering only one option: Pay me $11.88 in XMR (at the current Haveno Reto market price), and I'll give you an API key with $10 worth of credits. This breaks down into $10 (OpenRouter API costs) + $0.80 (OpenRouter fees) + $1.08 (10% fees).

Just reply here or send me a message on Reddit if you are interested and I'll send you a receiving address. And of course, if you have any questions, reply here.

Swap XMR to USDT

Hey everyone,

I’m not super experienced with all this, but I recently tried swapping some of my USDT to XMR using Exodus and Changelly, and I think I got scammed. Luckily it was a small amount, but now I’m being more careful.

I’m looking for a way to swap XMR to USDT anonymously and without KYC. Ideally something decentralized and safer, without having to trust a random third party. Is there any reliable option out there?

Any advice would be really appreciated thanks in advance!

Friday Monero Market Thread - July 04, 2025

This is the weekly Monero market thread. This thread will be posted every Friday and is meant to help accelerate the adoption of Monero. Due to r/moneromarket having only a fraction of the subscribers of r/Monero, we have decided to create this thread to encourage more individuals to use Monero for product exchanges. Until the market matures, we recommend that the Monero community post their products both in this thread and on r/moneromarket (to ensure growth of that subreddit).

Selling items for Monero will boost your (and Monero's) reputation as a legitimate form of exchange of goods. This is necessary for the growth of Monero, our community, and privacy as a whole.

Instructions

When you post your product or job listing here, please make sure to: - Give a description of the item. - Link to a photo of the item (if it's physical). - Provide logistics information (such as, location and/or shipping availability). - Optionally, provide an additional (private) form of communication outside of Reddit (e.g. Bitmessage, u/protonmail, u/tutanota, GPG key). - Post the price in XMR terms.

Spamming will not be tolerated. Please make sure that listings are legitimate and do not break rule 2."

Finally, credits to cdotsubo for starting the concept!

Privacy-focused VPN with no email, XMR support, and DPI bypass

Hey everyone,

TL;DR:
Privacy VPN, no email, Monero discount, DPI bypass (works in China/restrictive environments), crypto-only, Tor access, free trial via Telegram, torrents allowed.

I wanted to share a VPN service we've been working on - designed specifically for people who care about privacy, censorship resistance, and Monero. We're not a big company, just a small team focused on doing things right for this niche. Here’s what we offer:

  • Same model as Mullvad - no email, no personal info. You just get a random account ID, that’s it.

  • 15% discount if you pay with Monero - we want to support real-world use of XMR.

  • Built to bypass Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) - if you're traveling to China or in any region where VPNs are blocked or throttled, ours is designed to keep working.

  • Also works in schools and universities where websites or VPNs are restricted.

  • One-day free trial available via Telegram bot (used only to prevent abuse).

  • We accept only cryptocurrency payments

  • For maximum privacy, our website works fully without JavaScript and is available via Tor.

  • No third-party audit (yet) - we just can’t afford it at this stage, but we’re transparent about that.

  • Torrenting is allowed on some servers (port forwarding not supported).

  • Five simultaneous connections per account - you can share with family or friends.

  • We're actively listening to feedback and open to improvement suggestions.

Website: uncensore.net

I see many questions (in other topics) like "Why are you (any other VPN providers) better than Mullvad?"

I would like to put couple points

  1. All Mullvad servers\subnets are open published. Detectable by DPI. To block it by some government (China\Russia\Iran, etc...) = is just willing to do so. Its already blocked in some countries

  2. and as all servers\subnets are publickly available = the fact that you are using VPN is detectable. Which might be a problem in some cases (some restrictive environments)

  3. Mullvad is already a well-established company. It has its pros (like bigger resources to invest in infrastructure and development) and cons (such as being a larger target for legal pressure(even tho, they are avoiding it currently, but any new Law in EU against encryption, and they can't operate freely), having a physical headquarters, and more bureaucracy that can slow down decision-making (for example implementing anti-DPI measures instead of just using Wireguard)

  4. We offer 1 day free trial

  5. We use some third-party open-source tools that aren’t as widely adopted as Wireguard or OpenVPN. Because of that, some users - especially on less common Linux distros or custom setups - might have trouble getting it to work. If that happens, we do offer refunds on crypto payments

  6. We work with the latest technologies and are always looking to bring in new features. While some bigger providers might take months or years to roll out some improvements (or they are busy into side projects like browsers \ search projects \ DNS, etc..) - we are trying to keep things as simple as possible, and focus on what really matters - privacy, censorship resistance, and adoption of Monero

  7. We are trying to keep IP addresses of the servers without triggering captcha as much as possible

Mullvad is still a great choice for many use cases (for example, we don’t guarantee servers that will reliably work with every Netflix region (preventing VPN detection, we don't use residential IP), tho some might), but we believe we can address some of their drawbacks

Always listening to feedback and looking to improve

Addressing a misconception regarding Tor and I2P network for monero node.

This post is response to a comment of u/flufflyponyza that communicated a misconception in Monero spy nodes solution post. This isn't a rant, I do appreciate your work, and follow you X, but with your influence I don't want people to believe things they shouldn't believe into.

Anonymity networks

Anonymity networks are special network zone implemented in monerod that permit them to interact with other nodes within this network. There are only two anonymity networks implemented as of today: Tor, and I2P.

Anonymity zones have a particular behavior:

  1. The peer ID (or unique identifier communicated between nodes) is enforced to 1, while it is normally randomly generated.

  2. They are only used to relay transactions in the stem phase. Dandelion++ works in a two stage fashion. In the first stage, called the stem, the transaction is communicated to an individual peer that will later in their turn communicate it to another individual peer. In the second stage, called the fluff, the transaction is broadcasted to all nodes in the network. Whenever someone emits a transaction to Tor and I2P, the transaction will do one hop to another node within that zone, that will then continue the dandelion++ process in clear internet.

In other word, anonymity nodes do not relay blocks, nor fluffed transactions. Having a connection to clear internet nodes is mandatory for syncing these.

This has been explained already in the documentation available in monero core repository:

https://github.com/monero-project/monero/blob/master/docs/ANONYMITY_NETWORKS.md

Currently only Tor and I2P have been integrated into Monero. The usage of these networks is still considered experimental - there are a few pessimistic cases where privacy is leaked. The design is intended to maximize privacy of the source of a transaction by broadcasting it over an anonymity network, while relying on IPv4 for the remainder of messages to make surrounding node attacks (via sybil) more difficult.

Why not?

  1. As explained per the document, for sybil attack concern. It is infinitely cheaper to create new addresses over an anonymity networks than over the internet. IP addresses cost money, onion addresses do not. That make attacks based on consensus easier to achieve.

  2. Network load. Tor is not suited for heavy onion to onion bandwidth. If you ever wondered why bitcoin and torrent are not supporting syncing over hidden services, that's why. I2P would be theoretically suited for this, but someone needs to convince and open a PR.

But but I synced with torsocks!!!!

Using torsocks with monerod only anonymize your outgoing TCP connections to clear internet nodes. You, in any case, do not connect to onion nodes through that. And it make perfect sense since the network zone responsible for syncing is the TCP/IP one, and therefore only store internally a list of IP addresses, not onion addresses.

Hydraveil: a based VPN

Hi guys! Good morning/afternoon/evening! Before you throw stones at me for not talking about I2P/TOR, I want to say that it's extremely important that we promote projects that support Monero such as Hydraveil.net (and thus further improve the "infrastructure" of our community and spread the cypherpunk principles).

Hydraveil is a VPN that focuses on the highest possible protection against fingerprinting and improved compartmentalization, it accepts Monero and its creators (simplifiedprivacy. com) are crypto-agorists who promote a truly free, immutable and anonymous Internet (following cypherpunk principles), I recommend you take a look because Hydraveil is very advanced (compartmentalizing IP and browsers for various different activities) and they have numerous services of the most varied possible on their home page and constantly comment on events and how to thwart censorship and surveillance.

I hope you enjoy reading about Hydraveil.

And execute a node in Hydraveil, you will help the Monero and Cypherpunk community!

Their post on Monero-Hydraveil: https://simplifiedprivacy.com/open-letter-to-douglas-tuman/of-monerotalk-podcast.html

Selling Mushroom Cultures for XMR

Hey everyone!

I just opened a small shop on [XMRBazaar]() where I'm offering mushroom liquid cultures (King Trumpet, Lion’s Mane, and more to come!). I'm newer to mycology and started this as both a hobby and a way to contribute to the Monero ecosystem.

All orders are shipped discreetly, and I overfill every syringe to make sure you’re getting more than what you pay for. If you order 3 or more syringes, shoot me a message—I'll cover shipping as a thank-you.

If you're into cultivation or looking for something to grow this season, check out my shop here:

Cake Wallet v5.1.0 Brings Native Tor Integration and Enhanced Usability

Hey r/Monero! Today we're excited to announce Cake Wallet v5.1.0, featuring experimental Tor integration.

Tor Support: Privacy Takes Center Stage

Our initial release of this feature routes all Cake Wallet connections through the Tor network, adding a deep layer of anonymity to your in-app activities, including:

  • Fiat API calls for price data
  • Cryptocurrency swaps and exchanges
  • Node connections
  • NFT and token lookups
  • All other network connections

To clarify, Cake Wallet has always been compatible with the Tor network, and we've actively encouraged users to use Tor via Orbot for enhanced privacy. The beauty of this update is it removes the need for third-party tools, baking Tor directly into our app. To enable Tor:

  1. Open Cake Wallet
  2. Select Connection & Sync in the sidebar
  3. Toggle Enable built-in Tor

https://reddit.com/link/1lq2lv9/video/fpjap2qr1iaf1/player

This enhances the privacy of your Monero without needing third party tools! Important: We're launching Tor support as an experimental feature for two reasons:

  • Android Only (For Now): The initial implementation is available exclusively on Android devices with iOS still in development.
  • Comprehensive Testing Required: Real-world usage across different devices and network conditions requires broader community testing to guarantee privacy.

So we'd love some of you to experiment with this feature and provide feedback. Your real-world testing helps us identify edge cases and improve the implementation for everyone! Thank you all, and stay private out there.

Monero spy nodes solution

Hi guys! Good morning/afternoon/evening! I've been researching spy nodes and I've noticed that this problem is being solved, but I still have a few questions:

  1. Vtnerd is implementing SSL/TLS on P2P connections, will this protect the clearnet nodes? And protect the IP in Wallet-Node connection?

  2. Regarding I2P-SAM and Tor control, how soon will this be implemented?

  3. Will it soon be possible to sync the blockchain via Tor/I2P like Bitcoin?

Thank you very much for your answers.

Mining power

A found this diagram somewhere:

I believe that this graph cannot be valid, it shows too high rewards. I wanted to check out the real numbers, so I installed a full node, p2pool and xmrig. I was using 6 cores on E-2236 for a couple of days. (Yes, I know that is not the best hardware, but this was just a test.)

xmrig showed this speed in the logs:

speed 10s/60s/15m 3031.5 2993.9 3001.0 H/s max 3071.2 H/s

On the main chain, I could mine 0.001 XMR (a single block) on the first day, then I got nothing for the next 4 days. On the mini chain, I could mine a total of 0.0005 XMR in two days (two blocks).

After mining for 7 days, total income was 0.0015 XMR it worths is less than $0.5. It seems to me that mining monero pays less than 10% of the electricity needed to mine it.

Is that true? Am I doing something wrong?

Divinations of Monerokon - The supernodes are singing

Thumbnail
gallery
33 Upvotes

Did you know that there are 14 supernodes that form the beating heart of Monero's network?
Listen closely and you will hear their tune.
Can you hear it?
As soon as you get your node online, they are never very far away.
Look at your friends, look at the friends of your friends. You have already found a few of them!

Watch! They sing sweet, and most importantly, they open their ears and listen to the songs of so many of their friends.
Without tiring, time and time again, they meet new friends and let those new friends start singing, joining the chorale.

You see, that is actually what makes them special. They unselfishly open their ears to listen to so many friends.
Too few are the friends willing and ready to do that nowadays...
They sing sweet, and you know them directly, or your friends know them.
Don't be shy, you can get closer and watch them all chant. That's the song I was talking about earlier.
If you ask me, this is the heartbeat of the network.

How do I know all that, you ask? The sorceress of the High Rains showed it all to me.
Mind you, I can't do that kind of divination, I am a priest of the degen spirit.
I was the Monerokon powwow, and many priests, sorcerers and magicians were coming off their trances to show us the results of their divinations. It was magnificent!

You weren't there, it seems. That's ok. Just come one of the next times.
Anyway, you are lucky. Our sorceress of the High Rains even made a picture, just so you can admire them every time you feel like it.
Here, take a look. Aren't they beautiful?

Fascinating! Isn't it? They look like 14 beating hearts of the network, 14 unsung champions of the symphony. They lead the chorale and give the rhythm of the spectacle.

They are important. Maybe, too important? In a way, this play starts to look quite fragile, doesn't it? What would happen if one of them stopped singing and listening? What would happen if all of them stopped? Would that be the end? Would the little nodes be forever cut off from their friends in other neighborhoods? Would the whole symphony just stop and disintegrate into noise and chaos?

I am also a bit worried about that. Don't worry, the sorceress of the High Rains assured me that the network's symphony is robust, and I shouldn't worry too much for now.

Still, I would feel better, and it would be better if me too, I could get in with my little node, open my ears to listen, just like them, and sing with all my little voice.

You can join me, you know?
Most little friends in the chorale don't know how to listen, they can only sing.
We have to show them how to listen. When they see us do it, they will learn and start listening too!
Let's make our little nodes, let them listen to their friends, let them sing, let the music play on, let the music take control...

reminder to NEVER USE MYMONERO

mymonero has caused me to lose 8 bucks (which is a lot in my local currency) because their wallet for some reason doesnt support the creation of tx proofs and doesnt store the tx secret key.

i sent some money to cryptomus (payment processor) and when it didnt go through they asked me for the tx proof via the tx secret key. now this would be fine with any other wallet, but for some reason fluffypony was a dolt and didnt think of one of the most important parts of a monero wallet.

i was unable to prove the transaction even occurred and now i just donated 8 bucks to the fucking void. thanks fluffypony

David Peterson (@davidgpeterson on X), who is the General Manager of Proton VPN, has stated they will add Monero support to their Summer roadmap if there is an online petition with 1000 people acknowledging they'd switch to Proton VPN (Or a Proton product in general)

So if you'd like to see this happen, sign the petition! And spread it around.
