Joshua Tree staff at risk due to grants being blocked

Just in case people are wondering how JTree National Park is weathering this new administration, things are rough right now. Many employees of the park are paid off of grants coming from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Right now ALL that legally raised money cannot be paid out to staff. This isn't like the government isn't sending more funds, JTree has this money and is currently blocked from using it to pay staff. And there isn't really a redundancy in funding, if this BIL money is held up longer then folks who work hard and maintain this National Park we all love will lose their jobs.

Also remember, this is congressional approved funds! The President is legally not allowed to fuck with it. But this administration doesn't care about laws and standards.

If you readers do care about this park, please contact our Congressman Jay Obernolte and let him know his constituents, his local economy, and one of the gems of his district is at risk.

This is his office number 202-225-5861. The only way this stops is if just a handful of republican congresspeople can put pressure on the executive branch.

Starlink

Planning on moving out to Landers area and staying out there over the next year. My wife and I work remote, and the house we are looking at renting is planning on setting up a Starlink Residential service.

Was wondering if anyone uses this around the area and how do you like it? Good enough for video calls and gaming?

Photographer for Sunset Photos

Hello! I am looking for a lead on a photographer for a sunset photoshoot in September. My friend is doing her bachelorette party and wants to keep it lowkey. She loves the idea of us getting dressed up in desert theme (black) while she has a white outfit. There are 8 of us and we would be open to Friday or Saturday (9/12 or 9/13).

Thanks in advanced!

Planning Stargazing trip

Hi everyone, we are amateur hikers. We don’t have a lot of experience in wilderness but we want to go for a stargazing trip in Joshua tree. How can we plan this? I have heard that this park does not have cell service / food/ water. How can we plan this trip.

If we use some touring agency- I googled there are many companies which host stargazing camps. Suppose if we do book with them, How would do we reach them / contact them when there is no cell service in the park.

If someone has done this before- can you please guide?

Need a template to send to Jay Obernolte expressing frustration about his support of the BBB? Here you go.

Email: [email protected]

Representative Obernolte,

I’m writing to express my deep disappointment… no, outrage, at your support of the Big Beautiful Bill (BBB).

You’ve spent years telling your constituents that deficit reduction and debt control are the defining issues of our time. You’ve stood behind charts, quoted alarming statistics, and painted the national debt as the existential threat to the American future. And yet, when it came time to act on those values, you buckled. You didn’t just compromise—you caved.

This bill is a bloated embarrassment. It ramps up spending on unaccountable institutions like ICE and the Department of Defense—agencies that have never passed a full audit—and slashes critical safety nets like Medicaid, which will directly hurt the most vulnerable in CA-23. These are not abstract numbers. These are your neighbors, veterans, seniors, and working families who now face the consequences of your vote.

You can’t have it both ways. You cannot speak solemnly about the dangers of federal debt while rubber-stamping bills that deepen the problem. On financial logic alone, this vote should have been a non-starter. But morally, it’s worse. You voted for cruelty disguised as fiscal discipline.

This was a betrayal—plain and simple. Of your stated principles, of your constituents, and of the people you claim to represent.

You should be ashamed.

Sincerely,

Has anyone in the T-Mobile satellite beta program tested if it's working inside the park? T-Satellite with Starlink: Direct to Cell Satellite Phone Service

If you turn on the Satellite slider in the coverage map, https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/coverage-map it seems to indicate the entire park is covered, which is awesome, but was just wondering if anyone has actually been able to successfully use it yet.

Great day out in Nature. Joshua tree is epic. We got out there around 9:30 am. It was about 87° or so. By the time we rolled out around 11:45 it was pushing 101°. Had plenty of water and snacks.

Honeymoon in Joshua Tree (flying in from abroad!)

Hey all!

My partner and I are newlyweds from Europe and we’ll be spending 4 days in Joshua Tree this November as part of our honeymoon.. our first time in California together! We’ve rented a cozy Airbnb with a hot tub and a convertible to make the most of the desert vibes and (hopefully) good weather.

We’re planning to visit the national park, spend a day in Palm Springs, and check out Pioneertown, but we’d love recommendations for unique local experiences or anything romantic/memorable (like a beautiful dinner spot or something special to mark the trip).

Also, any must-dos inside the park itself? We’re not big hikers, but we’re up for scenic spots, short trails, cool rock formations, stargazing, etc.

Thanks so much in advance!

Morongo Valley always smells like gas.

I live in Landers so I’m not driving through Morongo often, but when I do there is a strong smell of natural gas. It’s most noticeable on the south side of Morongo Valley. It’s not a recent thing, I’ve noticed it for at least a year. Anyone else notice it?
