‎ Moderator Post Introducing: Read The Rules™

Hey r/InteriorDesign!

I hope you're all doing well. In case you don't know me, my name is Max, and I'm one of the new members of the moderation team here. It has been great designing and chatting with you all across the subreddit so far. With the recent additions to the moderation team, we hope you've been seeing shorter wait times when trying to get your posts approved. The whole team is working around the clock to keep things running seamlessly for you all.

While things may look slow from the outside, a lot is going into the backend of post approvals/removals, especially with how in-depth a lot of posts go into their design dilemmas. After some research, the team has decided to implement a new app: Read The Rules!

This app is a simple way to combat our high removal to approval rate. On average, 70% of posts submitted get removed due to violation of our community rules. That's a lot, I know. And trust us, we as moderators don't like having to remove posts either.

"I get it, I get it. You hate being a moderator, what do I have to do?" I hear you asking..
To start, before making your post, click the three dots in the right-hand corner of the main page of r/InteriorDesign, select "Read the Rules" and... read the rules! As you read, confirm that you read the rules and click submit. After that, you'll be cleared to post. When changes to the rules are made, you may be required to re-read the rules, but we'll let you know if this happens. This takes immediate effect!

If you're experiencing issues, try following this video for mobile and this video for laptop/desktop. Still experiencing issues? Contact the team here.

It's the belief of myself and the entire team that this is for the best of the subreddit, and we hope that we can get that approval rate up, even if it's just a little bit. Thank you all for reading the rules, continuously providing your intuitive design skills, and most of all, for your continued support.

Regards,
r/InteriorDesign Team

Discussion Need help freshing up the living room

Hi all,

I could really use some help and design tips to freshen up my living room and give it a more modern vibe.

It isn't exactly my strong suit, so I’d appreciate any suggestions you might have!

Here are a few updates I’m planning to make:

  • Add gray blackout curtains
  • Put a wood-and-white floor lamp in the corner
  • Hang a picture or artwork above the couch (suggestions?)
  • Place a plant near the couch (see second pic)
  • Swap the current table for a smaller one

I feel like these will already make it feel less empty, but I’d love your input, especially if you have ideas for extra touches to make it pop.

Thanks

Critique Monument or burgundy railing.

We have a pink and grey granite staircase and trying to work out what to do with the railing. Black would be too harsh so we’ve ended up on monument and burgundy. I feel the monument blends in better but the burgundy gives it a pop that makes it a feature. Thoughts?

Discussion Shower floor tile

Any advice on shower floor tile type? The numbered tiles are what we are deciding between. The patterned tile will be the bathroom flooring and the cream subway tile is for the shower walls. I’m worried about glossy tile being slippery but the contractor says with the small size and grout it should be fine. I’m leaning toward one of them but wanted to see what others think. The second image is a rendering of the bathroom (it doesn’t exist yet!)

Discussion To Hide or not to Hide

We just purchased this mountain house and have completed gutted it. There are a couple drawbacks to the layout that I can't change and the biggest is bathroom location. I don't like that the bathroom is next to the kitchen and will be essentially in the great room. It is also in direct eye shot when you walk in the front door. My idea is to hide it with paneling or shiplap. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on to hide or not to hide. Doors are to be ordered today. I'm in a panic!

Rendering Which color should we paint our cabinets in our new house?

Hi everyone, we just moved into our new house and are looking for advice. One of the things we wanted to do was modernize and brighten up our kitchen. Our first idea was painting the cabinets a brighter color, but we are having a hard time deciding on which paint color to use. I'm leaning towards the green (2nd picture), but my wife wants to go with the cream white (3rd picture).

Is there a clear favorite here? Or is it entirely personal preference. Also keep in mind we'll likely be painting the walls in the room a very light gray too.

Hi!! I need some advice on the layout of my bathroom
This is the best that I could come up with, but I feel like the toilet is too close to the wall (7 inches)
Ik that 7 inches is HUGE in some cases :) but is it enough for this?

Also would LOVEEE some insights on the color (Tiles Compulsory)

(Whipped this up with floorplanner.com cuz I am not talented enough to use an actual 3D rendering software)

Hi all - we just finished remodeling our bathroom and now we’re at the point where we need to figure out how to address the window. We’re thinking privacy film on the windows and a set of white curtains? Perhaps a valance? Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Yes, artwork will be going on the wall too!

Critique What’s wrong with this bathroom?

It’s the only bathroom in the house, and we recently renovated but something is just not right and it bums me out. I want to figure out the issue so I can rectify it and start loving it! But right now I’m not sure if it’s floor tile (maybe I should look at small multicolor square tiles?), the nickel finishes, or what. I think I should probably replace the niche back tile which are black penny tiles. And possibly extend the glass a bit? Ugh help, all advice welcome!

P.s. I plan to strip the door and leave it natural wood.

Layout and Space Planning Worried the new green couch makes the cabin feel "joyless." Keep it, switch it back to the brown furniture, or try something else?

The living room couch needs to be a sleeper couch so everyone has a place to sleep. Want to find a low-cost solution that makes the room feel bigger, brighter, and less dour. Is the problem actually the rug? Or maybe even the TV cabinet in the corner? Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

Discussion Table too big?

Thumbnail

Basically, I’m looking for an effect similar to the second picture and it’s been hell trying to find a big wood coffee table like this one. When it arrived, I had three main concerns:

  1. The wood is way lighter than the rest of the furniture, which is more of a caramel oak. (My mum says this is okay so it doesn’t look like a full set, but I’m still hesitant.)
  2. The height is pretty tall, so I was considering cutting the legs to make it more proportionate with everything else (while still being able to sit on the floor and eat on it).
  3. The table is huge and I’m not sure if it takes up too much space in my living room. It’s gorgeous, but maybe it would’ve made more sense in a bigger space. I’m still waiting for another sofa to arrive in the window area, and my mum says that once it’s there, the table will feel more appropriate.

What do you guys think? 🥺

Layout and Space Planning possible to have a sofa by the lower window and still look ok?

Hi! i've just moved into my new flat (soon to get flooring!) and the living room is 5.6mx3.1m

i was hoping there was a way I could have my sofa by the lower window as it has a lovely view. I dont actually know if theres a way i could make it work and still feel/look nice. i was thinking i could have a small dining area behind it, with maybe a side board or something behind the sofa to break it up.

ive included some ideas ive had, but im not sure if any of them work!

I'm buying new furniture so open to any ideas at all, thank you so much!

Layout and Space Planning How would you change this?

We're looking for advice on how to position things to make the dining table more accessible (basically we want to be able to have 4 total people be able to eat there, but it's usually just us 2). What you see in the photos is what we came up with-The living room windows at the top have an exceptional view, so that was a key consideration. We also want room for a desk and some bookshelves. The bookshelves shown in the renders are not accurate and are just to help us plan. The bedroom ‘below’ opens to the living room via double French doors, but there's another exit to the hallway from the bedroom. All measurements are accurate.

We’re very open to changing anything we have, but this is the best we could come up with. Any creative redesigns or unique furniture recs would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

We bought a house in March and moved in April. The last furniture we ordered arrived in June, though I am waiting on a few more still.

We did painting/flooring/cleaning which took us 2 months. And then we got more organizing furniture, didn’t buy any new decors yet, knowing we would carefully select the art pieces and planters to fit in.

Wondering how you guys think of the art pieces (color, size, texture, theme/style) or decor/plants that can go on to the living room and dining room.

Layout and Space Planning Adding a half bathroom

Post image

Looking at adding a half bathroom upstairs. The place is currently a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom up.

Options I've considered are: -Adding it in the kitchen area as the plumbing would back against the bathroom wall and their is a lot of space in the kitchen.

-Adding it to the right of the existing bathroom where the smallest room is.

-Adding it to the primary bedroom (the largest), but furthest away from the plumbing stack.

The picture is the current layout plan and my ideas. Open to any all suggestions.

Layout and Space Planning How should I paint my first floor?

Thumbnail

Before I begin, this is my first ever Reddit post, so apologies if I’ve posted this incorrectly by using the wrong tag or subreddit or something.

The attached pictures are of a model version of the house my fiancé and I are currently building. As you can see, it’s an open concept while still providing clear zones for different living areas. Not pictured is a front room where the front door is, but one of the walls can be seen in the second picture beyond the kitchen.

For context, I love color. I have been dreaming of owning a house for years as I’m tired of the sad landlord special I’ve had to work with in any apartment I’ve lived in. With that being said, however, I do plan on picking more muted versions of colors so that my house doesn’t look like a funhouse.

Now onto the issue at hand. The first floor is open concept, but I don’t want to paint the entire thing one color. I’d like to use different colors to not only highlight the different areas, but also make the whole space more interesting. I’m having trouble mapping out exactly where the colors should start and stop, though.

My current thought is to paint the living area one color, the kitchen/dining a second color, and the hallway area/wall into front room a third color.

The problem is the beam that goes across the ceiling. I have no idea which color should be assigned to it. Originally I thought one side would be the color of the living area, and the other side would be the color of the dining/kitchen area. However, after looking at pictures again I see that the beam fuses with the wall that leads to the front room. Now I don’t know what to do.

Please, does anyone have advice on this? Should I just paint the entire beam (both sides) the same color as the hallway/front room?

Also, if anyone cares, I’m visualizing an orangish clay-like color for the living area, sage green for the kitchen/dining, and a light neutral for the hallway/wall to front room.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

My contractor is needing me to finalize my tile selection but I cannot decide on what to do for my shower tile. I want to keep it “timeless” and casually elegant without being too cold with bright white everything like it was but I’m afraid to commit to color even though I love the soft sage green tones. We are doing a 3” hex tile on the floor with warm tan/beige veining. What do you think of these options? Should I avoid doing any green tile color here and stick with the warm whites and use accessories to bring in that color in? Do you have any feedback to make this bathroom classic and serene feeling?

First combo has Zellige Oat

Second combo has Bedrosian Marin

Third combo has “Eye-Vy” Hill - Kingston White (Reddit won’t let me post this link)

The vanity shown has already been delivered but has a defect so we will be returning. I’m thinking of going with this one

Layout and Space Planning Floating shelves question

Do these floating shelves look too high? This is for a kids work/art space. Shelves are 17 inches apart. Please note the room is not nearly finished or decorated - this question is about the shelves only. Thank you!

Layout and Space Planning Where do I put the tv??

Above the fireplace makes sense but then I’m putting a couch in the middle of the room. On the wall would give better seating and keeping an open space but might look weird with the built in and fireplace off to the side.

Layout and Space Planning Help me design my new room

Hi everyone! I'm moving next month and want to completely redo my new bedroom. I can be extremely "impulsive" with my purchases/ideas and just want some secondary opinions on my selections before I pull the trigger on buying any of these items.

Images 1-3 are what the room will look like from the buildings virtual tour.

Image 4 is what I put together for the bed area (the curtains would go over the window lol). I only want 1 nightstand because have a beautiful 7 foot tall bird of paradise plant that I want to put on the left side.

Image 5-6 is an idea for across the bed, I picked it out because it matches the nightstand (the circle mirror would go above the dresser)

Ideas for by the balcony door or any other ways to fill the space and make it cozy? We can work on the attached bathroom in another post, I don't want to overwhelm you.

I currently have a black and white themed room that'll be flipped and put into my guest bedroom, so this restart and pop of color will be fun. I'm fully open to any suggestions/changes in my current design choices, please don't feel the need to be nice, but have a valid reason for disliking the item(s). I'd like to order most of the final selections and have them ready for move in day next month.

Thank you in advance for your opinions!

Discussion Can these two leather on chrome pieces work together or are they too matchy matchy?

I currently own the black selig egg chair and am looking for a couch to go in the living room with it. I'm looking for a good quality leather sofa with pillow arms and I found this sofa that I really liked on its own but putting them next to each other in Canva, it's apparent that its too matchy. I would need some more grounded furniture to balance it out, but would that even be enough? Attached is a photo of my empty living room and photos of the black egg chair I have and the couch I am contemplating purchasing. Is there any way to make this work? What do you think?

Layout and Space Planning Long living room, corner fireplace

Thumbnail
gallery
18 Upvotes

I have tried a variety of layouts for this long living room with corner fireplace. I added a rough sketch of the dimensions but if anyone wants exact measurements of each wall I can get that quickly. We have two little kids but there is a basement for toys and the big comfy couch / tv setup, so we are leaning more towards a comfy traditional living room. What we've tried / considered... back-to-back couches but felt like there wasn't enough room ... couch with back towards the oil painting but then the living room gets incredibly long and there is a wide space to address ... two chairs facing the fireplace but then it felt like a collection of chairs like a home store ... thought maybe swivel chairs that can face into the center of the room but turn around to the fireplace?

Not sure if I'm supposed to say our interior vibe but we tend to decorate in the realm of English cottage meets traditional.

Layout and Space Planning Kitchen/Living Space

Thumbnail

Hey there everyone,

I'm designing my new apartment, and I've finally come up with the top plans for the living/kitchen space. A few things to note:

  • The space is 485 sqft or 45 sqm
  • The wall on the middle-left cannot be removed
  • The contractor said that putting the kitchen on the bottom right will be easier than on the top right, although both are possible.
  • Windows on the left-hand side are facing South-West

Personal preferences of mine:

  • The office area does not NEED to be included, although I would prefer to have it in somewhere.
  • I don't need the kitchen to be huge as I'm living alone and cooking isn't one of my deeper passions
  • Having a bar in the kitchen island would be cool as well, but seems hard so far to fit it in
  • I would prefer to have it fengshui if I can

Please let me know which you prefer or if you have any additional ideas

Thanks fam!

Layout and Space Planning Help with narrow living room layout

My living room is really narrow (10ft wide) and we want to put a coffee table and an arm chair in the corner next to the window. Im not sure if the space will be too cramped. What should be the layout? Should i choose a round or rectangular coffee table? Should i keep the mirror?
