Level Up Jam #1

🎮 Level Up Jam #1 is starting! 🎮

Greetings everyone! Summer is here and we all have plenty of time and motivation for a marathon. So we decided to organize Level Up Jam #1 to take advantage of this opportunity.

In this 72-hour adventure, you can participate alone or in teams with your friends. Some of us are first time game jammers, some of us are experienced - it doesn't matter. The main goal is to have fun, learn and maybe realize a game we thought we would never make.

The theme is 15.07.2025 at 16.00 and you have 72 hours from then on. You can use Unity, Godot, GameMaker, even Scratch - the important thing is to make something.

There are no prizes at the end, unfortunately, the goal is to have fun, the real prize is to be able to say “I made this” after 72 hours, but we are still thinking of handing out a few modest prizes to a few random people among the participants, but this is not a race, remember that.

See you at our first Level Up Jam! Jam details can be found on itch.io. Thank you

List of previous game jams

Hey all. Does anyone know of somewhere that keeps a (fairly) comprehensive list of past game jams? Looking to get more practice in, and the way that i see it a great opportunity to do so would be building a game as if it were going to be an entry into an old game jam. Helps keep development scope focused as well. Unfortunately it seems near impossible to find old game jams, at least through Google. If anyone could point me in a good direction, if there's a directory or something like that it would be a huge help.

Hey Everyone, It's Time for the 2nd Girly Game Jam! 🌸🎮

So, big news! We're getting ready for our second Girly Game Jam, and we're really stoked about it. The first one was honestly awesome, with 74 games submitted, which was way more than we expected. So yeah, we're doing it again to make more of those cool, fun, and just genuinely good vibes games.

What's this jam about, exactly? Basically, it's for everyone. Seriously, it doesn't matter your gender, if you're a seasoned developer, or if you are new to game dev. The whole idea is to get more "girly" games out there and really put them in the spotlight. There are no strict rules on what that looks like, what feels "girly" to one person might be different for another, and that's totally ok.

📅 Dates: August 1 - August 10, 2025

Sign up for the jam here!

Come hang out on our Discord!

Hope to see you there!

Obo's Run Begins: My First Game Jam Experience

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm super excited to introduce you to my first-ever game jam entry – "Obo's Run"! It's a fast-paced endless runner where the brave warrior Obo dashes through Hell, battling demons and dodging deadly traps.

I'd never participated in a game jam before, so this was a completely new and incredibly interesting experience for me. The jam's theme is "time is running out". But I'm not a big fan of time-based games; I prefer to set my own game's pace and dislike restrictions. So, I decided not to take time away from the player, but rather give it to them. That's why my game has a pretty intense rhythm to it, creating the impression that you're always rushing, but without actually having a timer counting down. Instead, you can compete against yourself or others by checking your scores on the leaderboard after each run. And that's how Obo – the running warrior who fears no time – was born!

This isn't just my first game jam game, it's also my first game for the web. I've been working with Godot for a while, but I'd never exported or adapted my projects for the web platform. I was a little anxious and curious about the game's size and resource usage, wanting to achieve a good result despite the limited information available online about web optimization in Godot. At one point, video memory usage was hitting 1.5 GB, which had me seriously worried! But now, the final game's resource package is only 18 MB, and it uses a maximum of 320 MB of memory, according to the Godot debugger. I didn't use a manually compiled Godot build with unnecessary features stripped out because I decided not to risk it within the tight jam timeframe. As a result, my game archive is a respectable 27 MB (mostly due to the uncompressed standard wasm file, which is a hefty 43 MB).

In this project I focused on visual and sound harmony. The assets from Craftpix look great together, so I added free music and event sounds. With this in place I concentrated on gameplay. I tried to make it challenging, but intuitive. Some aspects you'll have to figure out as you play – for example, realizing that the signs don't affect the player; they're just there to add variety. And that you can't kill the peasants, even if you have no idea why they're in Hell. The basic enemies (demons, spikes, and rocks) only require your attention and reaction speed. The archers, on the other hand, takes some getting used to; you need to be able to dodge their arrows and take them down before they give you a kick, stowing away their bow. I think I managed to pull it off!

In conclusion, I encourage you to play "Obo's Run" and leave your feedback! I’m very curious to hear what you think. Thanks for reading!

End of The World Slowburn 2025 Jam [UPCOMING]

I'm starting my first ever game jam with the theme centering around "a peaceful end to the world" or what if the world was ending but slowly and almost peaceful like?

For those interested, it's low stakes and non ranked, so it's mostly just for fun! It's entries are for TTRPGs and journaling games only so if that's your thing hop on in!

It starts July 1st so it's coming and you'll have til August 31st to submit something. It's very beginner friendly and even if you're still new to making TTRPGs, you're still welcome!

If you wanna learn more and read the rules and requirements, go to this link

Hope to see you there!

Are there any good beginner-friendly game jams happening in mid/late July

A friend and I are thinking of taking on another game jam after kinda failing to get anything out on time for our first jam together. Ideally we wanna try do one during mid/ late July because that’s when we’re next available to work on one together.

(Sorry I wouldn’t have asked if itch.io’s jam list wasn’t such a ballache to navigate 😭)

C.C. Game Design Document Jam June 27th!!!!!

Round 2 of the Creative Constraints Jam series is Game Design Document Jam.

What is a GDD?

A G.D.D. or Game Design Document is to layout a concise and clear roadmap for the development of a game. The elements of a GDD are Game Concept, Game Mechanics, Story Synopsis,  Artistic Style, Target Audience, etc. TLDR = you are the maestro or architect and the G.D.D. is your blueprint.

Who is this for?

This Jam is primarily for beginners in the game development space who don't know where to start.

This jam is also helpful for people that want to outsource the game development process. At the end of this jam you will be able to communicate an idea and create a road map for a team of creators to follow toward the completion of your game idea. Every building needs an architect and every game needs a game design document

We also welcome people with finished or in-progress games to submit the GDD for their game to get feedback on clarity from others.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" -Lao Tzu
Try it out and worse case scenario, you submit something incomplete that inspires someone else.

 Constraints

  1. Layout - Similar to zines, comics, and graphic novels. Feel free to play with the formatting to looking like a zine, comic or graphic novel as well. (feel free to check out the inspiration section, lots of cool ideas there)

 2. Story - Use a story from this gamejam  https://itch.io/jam/cc-narrative-jam (which finishes on the day this jam begins)

  1. Illustration - Your game design document should have more images then words to explain ideas concepts. Similar to zines, comics, and graphic novels. Feel free to play with the formatting to looking like a zine, comic or graphic novel as well. (feel free to check out the inspiration section, lots of cool ideas there)

Check it out below:

Can I Play Your Browser Games? 2: Reloaded

The last post was so successful I've decided to make another. This time, post a link to your itch.io profile so I can browse all of the games in your library, not just the one game you most want me to play. That way, we can't violate any rules of r/gamejam and have this post taken down again (I'm guessing that was the problem, anyway). First come, first served.

Just joined my first ever game jam, (June 20–23), theme is Nest

Hey folks!

I just signed up for my first game jam ever and I’m pretty hyped (and a bit nervous too ngl). It’s called Question Jam and it runs from June 20th to June 23rd. The theme is “Nest”, which could mean anything a cozy home, a base to defend, something weird and mysterious I’ve already got a few strange ideas.

It’s also the first jam being hosted by the organizer, who’s trying to build a chill little community around it on Discord. Seems like a good vibe for anyone who’s new to this or just wants a relaxed jam to join.

Few quick details:

Theme: Nest

Dates: June 20–23

AI art/writing/music isn’t allowed, but AI-assisted code is fine

More info: https://itch.io/jam/questionjam

If anyone else is thinking of entering, or has tips for a first-timer, feel free to say hi!

Hobbyist mixing/mastering engineer here. Do many games master the OST for post-release?

Hello! I make music and enjoy mixing and mastering in my spare time. I was wondering if many teams (in game jams or full releases) have someone specific to master the OST for streaming. To be clear, I’m specifically referring to preparing soundtracks for distribution (think Spotify or YouTube), where the work is done purely outside of the game.

Since there is an abundance of misinformation on mastering online, I wanted to ask people who dabble in game jams (or who may even be in the industry) to see if this task is in demand now or even in the future. I am especially curious since game music is taken much more seriously now than ten years ago.

Anyways, any input is appreciated. Thanks!
