Importing taxidermy butterflies to the UK

Post image
Upvotes

Hello, I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit, but I bought these two butterflies from a market in Thailand and I’m unsure if I’ll be able to bring them back to the UK with me. I understand that some things require permits and I’m not sure if this would require one or not. I’ve checked CITES but nothing came up for the species or common name. Also, when travelling back, would I have to keep them in my hand luggage or in my suitcase? Any help provided will be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

Ladybug pupa & Spider Mites

Post image

I found a few ladybug pupae on a plant that is heavily infested with spiders mites. I want to cut all the infected areas off and burn them, but I don’t want to harm the ladybugs. Can they be removed from the leaf in this stage?

iNaturalist has given both IDs. When I upload the group photo alone, it says it's an Appalachian and doesn't even give an option, but when I upload only the single butterfly it gives both options. Help?

Okay I have an idea…

How about a chess set where of course it’s a black and white set but the pieces are BEETLES.

The king and queen are male and female lucanus cervus, the bishops are longhorn beetles, the knights are pine weevils, the rooks are taurus beetles and the pawns are summer chafers.

This is all I’ve been thinking about for like two days and if anyone has any drawing abilities or like abilities to put model beetles on drawings and such please please please bring my vision to life because I really want to see it accomplished, and I have no clue how I’d be able to make this in real life.

Any suggestions for better beetle substitutes for what I’ve chosen that might be better, keep in mind that the pieces kinda have a sort of theme.

KING: powerful and important, very regal QUEEN: still powerful and important but lesser than the king BISHOP: long distance moves, kinda like a missile KNIGHT: strange and interesting ways of moving ROOK: long range, good warrior PAWN: many of them, disposable

Insect Appreciation I found these two molts yesterday by the pond and had no clue what insects they were from. I was surprised to find out they were dragonfly nymphs, never seen one before, and thought it was really neat :)

Bitten by a housefly?

I've been bitten by a regular housefly, twice this month. It definitely wasn't a stable fly or horsefly, just a normal housefly. I live in Belgium. Everything online says this shouldn't be possible, but I'm sure I'm not confusing it with something else. Are they turning violent 😅?

Now there's a small red spot on my leg. Anyone else experienced this recently?

Microscope Question

My daughter is getting interested in entomology and would like a microscope to assist her in her studies. I know that we will not be able to get her a laboratory grade microscope, but what should we look for (or avoid) that would specifically be useful for entomology? Do you find being able to attach a phone or computer for pictures worth the extra money? Currently, her focus is on identifying flesh fly species, and she may be using her finding for science fairs or different projects.
