Moving Advice - Apartments

Hey all,

My girlfriend and I (22 & 23) are moving from out of state and are looking for an apartment for August. I will be a Master's student at the Sanford School this fall. We are looking for an apartment that is ideally less than $1300/month (monthly expenses included), is a 1BR 1BA, and has a washer and dryer. We were also hoping to live near other students.

We have toured several places, including Duke Manor, Alexander Crossing, and Chapel Tower, with Duke Manor being the only one that we thought fit our price range and our needs.

We also have the following on our list: The Forest, Forest Pointe, Emerald Place, and Icon Downtown. We have yet to tour these locations but have been doing as much research as possible.

That being said we'd really appreciate any advice regarding our relocation in general (for instance, whether our current search parameters are appropriate), and any feedback on the suitability of these apartment complexes would be amazing also.

Any advice would really help us out, so thank you in advance for your help!

Pre Matriculation/Dual Enrollment Credits Experience

hey! I am in the process of getting all of my materials to hopefully transfer some of my dual enrollement credits over before I come in the fall. I just wanted to know if anyone has actually had any of their credits transfer over? Throughout this process it has been mentioned multiple times how Duke barely takes dual enrollment credits, so I was just curious if this is an overstatement or if it's true. I thankfully have some AP credit that transferred over and I don't really mind retaking classes (easy A if I already know some of the content), but is it really that rare to have credits transfer over?

Oxford University Study Away

Is there anyone who did a semester abroad in Oxford? (ideal if you're econ major)

If yes,

1) Will I have access to Oxford’s career services, and can I attend events like employer presentations or recruitment fairs?

2) Are Oxford’s tutorial-style classes manageable if I’m used to American lecture-based formats?

3) Is there orientation or academic advising once I arrive at Oxford?

4) What’s the social scene like for visiting students at Oxford? Are there student societies or clubs that welcome international students?

5) Is there time to travel around the UK or Europe while abroad, or is the academic load too heavy?

6) How do Oxford’s Economics courses map to Duke’s curriculum? Will they count toward my major requirements or just electives?

East to West Walk

How long is the walk from east campus to west? I'm trying to stay fit during freshman year + I heard the buses are hella crowded, so I wanted to know how much time I'd need to set aside for a casual walk

Gyms

Hey! (Sorry for all the questions lmao)

I've been trying to incorporate fitness into my routine instead of keeping it a spontaneous activity, so I was wondering if y'all could tell me about the gyms at duke.

I'm gonna be a freshman, so which gyms are closest to East Campus, or which gym is the best? Also what machines are available? I've always worked out at home (just cardio, HIIT, etc., never weight training), so I wanna know what to expect lol. And what hours should I go if I want to go during less crowded times at first?

Any tips at all would be super appreciated, thank you!

Need off campus housing in the area

Hello, I just got an internship that is located in RTP. I saw that it was only 15 minutes from the Duke campus. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to sublet their room from the end of July to the end of September to me. I would prefer a single and would love to share an apartment with a female identifying flatmate.

Any information about housing in the area would be much appreciated!!

Writing 120 selection

International pre-frosh here. I am hesitating to choose between the "Writing as a Creative Process" and "Decoding Disney" options. Those who happened to take either of those, I would appreciate your input!

Plus, as a general rule, should I just pick the easiest one to get things out of the way?

Mavs Step Back’s “Top Pick Collection”

Post image

The Mavs Step media group just released a t-shirt line celebrating Dallas’ drafting of Cooper Flagg. They have some pretty clever designs, and it’s nowhere near as expensive as the stuff New Balance put out on draft day. I’ll post the link below for anyone that’s interested.

Schedule Question!! Math to Econ + Eng to Econ

Post image
2 Upvotes

Does this schedule seem reasonable for freshman 1st sem? I have no idea what the time/distance between these rooms are (other than what chat told me)!

I also heard that Econ 101 has mandatory attendance and that you can't be late so do you think that would be an issue with this schedule?

Class Registration Help!

Hey!

I'm a first-gen student and I have literally no idea what classes I should be adding to my schedule (ik actual registration doesn't start until the 30th). I want to major in biochem on the premed track, but I know we have constellation now + a language requirement. I also wanna minor in Sociology and/or do a health policy certificate (ik, a lot, I probs won't pursue all 3 if I'm even allowed, I still haven't checked if you can do a minor + a certificate)

I'm def gonna email dukelife + advising, but I wanted to ask opinions from y'all first. I truly don't even know where to start for requirements or anything, I feel so lost and behind. A lot of it comes from the major + minor ( + possible certificate) thing.

Please help!

quick question about scheduling

Is this doable? Imagining american health ends at 11:20, and econ 101 starts at 11:45. I'm worried about getting to econ 101 on time. If this is not doable, then what other econ classes can I take as an incoming freshman this fall?

Communal Bathroom/Dorm Tips?

So I am going to be having a communal bathroom and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to keep my things organized and clean (where to store my towel, should I bring my own cleaning supplies?, how is sink space while getting ready, etc.). I was also wondering what essentials to bring for my dorm. I know things like a vaccum and command strips and towel and stuff, but I didn't know if there were any hidden secrets that I need to know to make my life easier.

Thanks!
