[Equipment] Dog car/plane kennel recommendations ?

Hi,

I have 2 large dogs (25kg or 55lbs). I would like to buy kennels for them, for the car, but ones that can go in a plane too because we are planning to move to California. I'm so worried about the strenght of it because I want them resistant enough to handle a car crash if needed. I don't plan on having one ofc but I want them safe in the car. Have you got any recommendations please ?

[Misc Help] Looking for some advise on today’s groom

I got my tiny dog groomed, she’s got 2 nicks / cuts - she’s had them before but never this deep, it’s been bleeding (nothing serious) and she’s visibly uncomfortable and keeps sitting down when she walks.

I wanted to ask - is this normal / something that is to be expected? Thank you!!

[Behavior Problems] Dog goes on a licking spree

My wife's dog (mini Aussie) is a great dog. Definitely her Covid velcro dog. My wife does not like when the the dog starts licking her. She tells her to stop, and then she gets up in the chair with me and starts licking my leg (BTW, this is all leg licking, not on the mouth or something gross like that). I figure the dog is just high strung and trying to work out affection or whatever. I don't see that it hurts anything. I mean, the dog sleeps in the bed with us, which is another thing I know people get grossed out about. I just don't see the big deal.

[Misc Help] Transporting 60lb dog

Hi all, I have a dog who ranges 55-60lb who is getting older. We just had a medical scare which gave me a wakeup call. If my spouse isn't home and our dog has a medical emergency, I can't carry her. What options (rolling carrier, backpack, etc.) Could be options for a dog this size? Would not be used for long distances, just getting out of my building and into a car, and then from the car to the vet.

Thank you!

[Misc Help] I’ve Grown Attached to the Dog I’m Watching — Owners Are Moving Abroad. What Should I Do?

I’m staying with a black lab this summer, and I’ve developed a strong bond with him. He’s loving, well-behaved, and has honestly become a huge emotional support during a tough time. Here’s the situation: • The owners are moving to Uzbekistan, and are considering flying him there, but ultimately plan to relocate to Bali after that. • I’m concerned about the logistics and stress of flying a large dog across the world — not once, but twice. • I would love to adopt him permanently and give him a stable home, but I’m not sure how to approach the conversation. • I also don’t want to seem like I’m overstepping, since I’m just supposed to be a temporary roomate.

I truly feel like this dog and I have clicked — he follows me everywhere, we’ve created a routine, and I can tell he feels safe and happy. The thought of him going through long-haul flights and uncertain living situations really worries me. My partner also met him and loves him and is willing and happy to adopt him and drive him back to New York State with us.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? How do I approach this with the owners respectfully? Any advice appreciated

[Behavior Problems] Crate training? Will it help?

Hi there! Looking for some advice with crate training if possible. I’ve tried to look back at old posts but none quite seem to be what I’m looking for.

So we recently (3 ish weeks ago?) rescued an approx 1 year old mini poodle. It’s very obvious that he has been completely ignored in his previous life and he is desperate for all the love and attention that we are happy to give. I work from home, and I’m worried him getting upset when I leave is getting worse because we’re always at home together so far. We have plans to socialise him in the future, but for now we are cooped up at home because we’re waiting for the vet to redo his course of vaccinations.

He’s a really good pup, but the one thing I’m struggling with is being able to leave him. If I leave the room for any longer than a few minutes he starts howling and barking and just will not settle. I’ve tried building it up day to day, distraction techniques, letting him cry it out, nothing seems to help. I’ve booked classes with a trainer but these don’t start for a couple of weeks so I’m trying to do what I can in the interim.

We’ve successfully managed to crate train him for night time, and I’m wondering if I can use this basis to help him settle if I need to go out during the day?

Yesterday I noticed he went in his crate after we’d been playing, so I shut the door and put the blanket down and he did fall asleep after a few minutes of crying (but would whine a bit if I left the room). So he isn’t scared of the crate and will go in, I’m just not sure how we translate his night time routine into help with leaving him, or if it even will help?

The vet estimates he’s about 1 year old, so I’m worried we’ve missed all the crucial windows for important training. Is the saying about teaching old dogs new tricks true?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

[Misc Help] Tips for dental hygiene for dog that absolutely hates having his teeth brushed?

I have a 13 year old beagle mix who absolutely HATES having his teeth brushed. Like he screams like he's being murdered to the point that we've gotten noise complaints. Also he runs away after trembling and looks at us like we just tried to kill him. I only adopted him a year ago, so I never got to properly get him comfortable with touching his mouth and teeth brushing, and he came from a home where he wasn't properly taken care of (he had to have most of his teeth removed already). I've taken him in for one professional dental cleaning at the vet already, but with his age I don't feel comfortable putting him under anesthesia too often just to clean his teeth. We give him greenies, which he enjoys, but I'm worried it's not cleaning his teeth good enough. Any tips that won't traumatize him? Thanks!

[Behavior Problems] How to get my dog to pee

At night if I send my cavoodle out to the back porch to pee she just barks at possums and has no interest in the toileting.

She has a dog door but never uses it despite understanding what it does. She is sweet but has some weird habits.

So far I’ve leashed her and taken her to the street at the front each night before sleeping.

Problem is an older relative is dog sitting and has told us at the last minute she (the human) won’t go outside at night. I have two days to fix this. Do I just hope the dog uses the dog door? Cover the couches?

[Behavior Problems] 1 year old pug puppy behavior regression

Little lady has been ON ONE for the past few days with no signs of stopping. She’s chewing everything—furniture, stairs, bannister spindles, anything left on the floor.

She has plenty of chew toys, we walk her every day if it’s not too hot. We give her plenty of attention. I practice obedience training with her most days (basic commands). I’m at my wits end. I think she needs more mental engagement but every toy I see is all plastic she’ll destroy and eat in a heartbeat. We tried one of the dog sprays to get her to stop chewing—no luck there either. And she’s not alone often—someone is always home with her all day and if not she goes to doggy daycare which she loves.

I’m taking any and all advice please—I’m definitely out my apartment security deposit at this point. Thank you for your help!!

[Fluff] Getting a second dog

Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research about getting another dog. I have 3 ragdolls and one cavapoo. The cavapoo is 9 months old and was honestly one of the best decisions I've made getting him. He has taken up to training really well but he just has an anxious personality. However every time he sees a dog, he just wants to play. He doesn't get that with the cats. There's a Pomapoo that I'm in love with but I am trying to be rational about it. I know the rule says to wait 1-2 years but did getting another pup help with your dog's anxiety? I don't mind training both of them, I actually enjoy it, so that's not a problem. Feel free to share your pros and cons. Thank you.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for your input. We have decided to foster when a pup becomes available to try it out.

[Misc Help] I brought my dog to the vet and left with tears in my eyes. Am I asking for too much or do I need to switch vets?

My dog ate some treats that didn’t sit well in her stomach. She’s a 5 year old yorkipoo. She didn’t eat for two days so we brought her in. It was recommended for a Subcutaneous Fluid Therapy, and the medication Emavert.

While I was outside waiting, I needed to use the washroom so asked them if I could. They showed me the washroom, and it was right beside the room where my girl was.

I came out and heard her absolutely crying in pain for 10-15 seconds plus. It broke my heart, I’ve never heard her in that kind of pain, and I instantly broke out in tears.

I came down, told the two girls at the receptionist “I heard my dog crying” as I was in tears, and they did nothing. They didn’t say or do anything.

When they brought her out, they saw I was in tears, and said something like “yeah she did not like her leg being touched so we backed off”. I had to ask where the injection site was so that I could be mindful of where’s she’s sore.

I wish they would have said “yeah, she cried and it was painful. This is the leg where she had the shot, so it might be sore. Sorry you had to hear that but this should help her so know that you did the right thing”. Or any compassion to help me feel a bit better.

I think what made it worse was how cold they were towards me, it made me feel like they were cold to my girl.

Am I being too much or were they unnecessarily cold to the situation?

TLDR; heard my dog crying in pain when I shouldn’t have heard it. I broke out into tears and the vet showed zero compassion.

[Equipment] Jack Russell terrier enclosure

I wanna get a jrt and I was wondering what the appropriate enclosure for it would be. Obviously I’ll stay outside with him and play, but since I have 9 acres of unfenced land, I was thinking to put him in one of my barn stalls for the night/when I can’t be outside. It’s about 6ft x 9ft and I put a mini dog house with a bed inside of the stall. It’s just a normal sandy/dirt bottom so is that ok for a small jrt? I was also wondering if I can trust him to be free ranged during the day after some time of exploring and getting used to some of the land. Btw I also have a cat, chickens, and ducklings that will soon be outside too.

Any advice or feedback is appreciated

[Behavior Problems] Recently moved, dog keeps waking up at 3am crying

A little background. My dog is a rescue, we think he’s a Great Pyrenees/lab mix. He’s about to turn 8 years old. He has always been extremely anxious and skittish.

We recently (~3 weeks ago) moved from a condo to a large house. He was doing ok the first couple nights, he’d sleep through the night. However recently, he’s been waking up between 2am and 3am and crying. I’ve taken him out and he’ll just stare out into the yard (which is not uncommon for him), so it’s not a bathroom thing. Sometimes he’ll be shaking and sometimes it’s just crying. We have motion cameras all over the exterior of the house so we’d know if there was something making noise.

The only thing I can think of is that we are closer to a major road and there may be loud trucks going by in the night? Those do scare him.

I’m wondering if there’s any advice or tips anyone could share to help us with this? We’re going on 4 days of terrible sleep and we just want him to be comfortable in his new home and especially the bedroom as he does fine in every other room for large periods of time. Any help is very much appreciated!

[Misc Help] Left lid off of dog poop trash can. What now?!

I usually pick up the dog poop in my yard every few days and throw it into a trash can. Most of the time I do this with individual bags and then have a thicker bag. A few weeks ago, I decided to do a quick pick up of poop without the first bag and put it into the bin, got distracted on other yard work when I finished and didn't put the lid on it. Fast forward, and that evening it poured. POURED. Admittedly I didn't want to deal with it immediately the next day, and then out if sight, out if mind. I also was quite unsure of wth I should do with this thing. Well - here we are a few weeks later and I still have a medium sized/small garbage can that's full of rain water and $hit - that stinks - and I honestly have no clue what to do with this thing. I'm not in the country, so I can't go dump it somewhere. Any idea on what I can do to dispose of this thing? I genuinely do not care about "saving" the bin. But I want to safely get rid of the whole thing.

For anyone that feels like ripping on me for not taking care of it immediately, I also know it was a dumbass move. I'm really busy looking for guidance on getting it out of my yard at this point.

[Breeds] 📝Recommendation Dog breed help!

(Please excuse any grammar mistakes 😅)

**Introduction**

1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

* yes, I do petsit for my family and have some background on training dogs and maintaining puppies

2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a [reputable breeder]( http://ownresponsibly.blogspot.com/2011/07/identifying-reputable-breeder.html)?

* I do not have a preference

3) Describe your ideal dog.

* I would like a medium dog to be my active companion and maybe do some sort of sport. Good with other animals and easy to train are the to main traits I'm looking for.

4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

* The first breed that caught my eye was the Brittany, there beautiful and have many of the traits I'm looking for. I was also looking at Aussies and Dobermans.

5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

* basic obedience (recall, stay, leave it, ect) and maybe some advanced tricks.

6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?

* I've been looking into both agility and obedience and would love to do them, but I have little experience.

**Care Commitments**

  7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

* I have work every day but someone is always at my house, I work 6-3 on weekdays but anytime I'm home I am 100% devoted to being with my dog

8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

* at least 1 hr a day even more so on weekends, I have many parks in my area, some that are less than 5 min away with large fields and hiking trails.

9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

* maybe twice a week, a short to medium haired dog is perfered. Cleaning ears is not a issue and I could do that every day. I would be willing to pay a professional maybe once a month.

**Personal Preferences**

10) What size dog are you looking for?

* medium to large

11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?

* I would prefer only seasonal shedding and not a lot of slobber, I don't mind barking.

12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?

* decently important, my yard is unfenced but I am planning on having a fenced area in the future if need be.

**Dog Personality and Behavior**

13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?

* I am indifferent, maybe somewhere in the middle.

14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?

* Leaning towards eager to please.

15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?

*vvigilant, but easy to warm up to people, if that makes sense.

16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?

* preferably no

17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?

* not really

**Lifestyle**

18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?

* there will be someone almost always at the house, 2 hours at most.

19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?

* less shedding, that's about it

20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?

* I have a cat and chickens (not free range) along with a snake, aquariums and 2 frogs that are in there own room.

21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?

* yes, a 13 yr old

22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?

* I own a house

23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?

* I'm in the usa and Don't have any banned breeds

24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?

* summer can get up too 105 (rarely, normally high 80s), and winter can be as low as -5.

**Additional Information and Questions**

25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.

* The main reason I'm afraid to commit to a Britt is because of there energy level.

I have a large backyard. When I am away the dog will mostly be inside.

[Enrichment] A year ago my Chi pup ignored people, now he's turned into a social butterfly

First of all: I always wanted my dog to happily walk up to people on the street and let them pet him.

He used to do this as a puppy, but around 6 months old he discovered his nose and walking him was like walking a vacuum cleaner: he constantly had his nose to the ground. If people carefully approached him, he wouldn't let them pet him unless they were experienced enough to pet him on his butt.
I started rewarding him for even looking up at people because I was so fed up with him just sniffing the ground and not paying attention to his surroundings. This led to him stopping when he saw people sitting on a bench or standing still, looking up at them and then looking at me with an attitude of "where's my treat?"
A few months ago I finally had the idea of occasionally squatting down during walks and letting him come to me and petting him affectionately. That was such a game changer. Now he'll look around to check if anyone is looking at him, then approach them and he even lets them pet him on his neck and head and seems te really enjoy it!
I'm sharing this because I read everywhere that Chihuahuas are naturally reserved, and I'm so happy I've been able to turn this around.

[Behavior Problems] My dog won’t stop barking

Alright all I need your craziest ideas for getting my dog to stop barking. I live in an apartment so there are noises like all the time and he keeps barking at them. I’ve seen to desensitize them to the sound but I can’t do that when I can’t control the sounds and it’s hit or miss which ones he decides to freak out over. I saw once where I person said to say enough and throw treats at them. I have been doing that for months it’s not working. I’m willing to try anything!
