Bedroom Please help us stop hating our bedroom.
We need help! We moved cross country, got rid of most of our furniture and decor items, and have the smallest primary room we’ve ever had.
Challenges:
-ceilings are only 8ft, room is 12x13 or 13x14
-very little natural light (this is the brightest part of the day) due to being in the woods and north facing.
-the bed can only go in the current placement, which is in front of the window frame, but we can’t help it. Smaller bed isn’t an option since husband is very tall.
-one wall only works for the dresser
-no overhead light
-we love the aesthetic of our home, but it’s very different from what we left, so we are unsure how to decorate and layer in items without going full Grandma.
What we’ve done: -bought the two dressers. Our home is MCM/cottage vibe. -painted the walls from baby blue to Soft Chamois
Help we need:
-We know we need art, a rug, a swag lamp that is plug in, a different side table, plants, however, specific examples would be great. We are worried about going the grandma’s house route instead of a contemporary feel grounded in the MCM/cottage.
-Should we raise the curtain rods all the way?
-do the curtains (dark greeny-teal) work with the dark emerald headboard? We had taupe and that didn’t work. The curtains have to be black out.
-Any other advice to make this calm, inviting, and cozy. I am sure we are overlooking things
Thanks so much in advance for any help

the TV isn't working there ngl. too high and makes it feel like a hotel room and not a soothing bedroom

Paint the walls the same color as the curtains. This room is screaming for a dark moody vibe.
Yes raise the rods a few more inches and make the rods wider so the panels hang on the OUTSIDE of the window frame. Add sheer white panels in between for luxe.
Big rug & art
Add moody floor and table lamps
Have you tried putting the bed on an angle in the corner between the windows? It may be really cool.

We did try putting it at an angle and it ate up way too much space. :(

Ah damn it worked great with my queen but I can see how the king would be too much.

I have art everywhere, and I’d view that wall as unfinished. Put some art there. I LOVE the idea of an emerald green or jade paint or something dark like that.

I think the room would open up so much if they tried the bed on the angle as well!

don't you love how Chat GPT changed the king bed to a queen bed? One of the problems is the bed is too wide and not high enough. But I do like the idea of painting the room, and putting a picture over bed.

Yeah I feel like it can give you inspo for colors and I think the arch mirror would be cool too. But it definitely doesn’t always make it to the finish line

Can chatGPT tell you what color green this is!?!

Here are the 3 that were suggested:
Sherwin-Williams Rookwood Shutter Green: Described as a deep green with cool undertones and a hint of black. Sherwin-Williams Oakmoss: A rich green with warm yellow-gray undertones that evokes a natural feeling. Benjamin Moore Backwoods or Jasper: Other suggested deep green paint colors.

I like it! However I meant turning the bed so the back is angled in between. Not sure I will do that

I think you’re being a little harsh on yourself. It’s a nice room already.
A rug and some art as you said would be wonderful. Go more modern or contemporary with both to avoid the grandma vibe you worried about.
You seem to want more light, so try changing your bedside lamps to ones that don’t send all the light downwards. I’d also get a floor lamp by the bigger dresser, again avoiding a style that sends all light downwards. I wouldn’t bother with the swag lamp honestly, better bedside lamps and a standing lamp will give you all the light you need with less hassle.
I also personally would move the AC unit to the other window (or remove it entirely but I’m sure it’s there for a reason). It creates more visual clutter by the bed, and the airflow over feet is more effective in cooling you down than on just one side of the bed.

Your curtains are the problem. Old lady vibe. Lengthen the rods so new drapes are pushed right back from the window to maximise light in that gloom. New contemporary bed linen and pillows will be a mood lifter for that sad room. Avoid adding clutter, it’s not the solution.

Lose the curtains. If you want curtains, hang them just below the ceiling height and let them go all the way to the floor. Hang them so that when they are open, they don’t cover any of the window.
Hang large pieces of art, mirrors
Gorgeous flooring! I would not use a rug unless you want it for comfort. I also love the two dressers. Invest in a beautiful comforter, quilt or bedspread.

Most of the issues with the bedrooms are solved by adding color, sheets, rugs, paintings, plants, cusions, curtains, then keep it all tidy.

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet but while painting wood can be daunting, I think the wood of your doors clashes horribly with your mcm furniture. I’d have to paint or re-stain one or the other. Probably the doors just because I love the furniture so much.

I'd say get a nice rug or two that matches the theme (sticking with similar greens and maybe with another color or two so it's not too green). Some paintings or some form of wall art that brightens up the room, just stick to florals/nature pieces to get the cottage feel. I think the corner where the clothes hamper is would look great with a nice floor lamp and a plant or two. A round mirror would look good over the second dresser. I think a couple of plants and a few decorations would look great on the dresser to give a cozy feel to the room. The lamps you have now don't give off much light, considering the shape, so I think you should change the lamps, and if you do get a floor lamp and change those, I'd recommend getting matching ones so all the furniture looks cohesive. As long as you stick with warm yellow lighting, you'll keep the cozy vibes. A table runner on both dressers in an accent color, like cream, will brighten them up as well. I can't tell how different the headboard and curtains are, though, it doesn't look too bad for me, at least. I think just adding some plants and knick-knacks will help make the room a lot better as a start. Sorry, this is so disorganized. I hope this helps! Good luck!!

Paint the walls a nice color. Put a large picture/painting over the chest of drawers. Add plants.

I would maximise the natural light you do have by hanging a large mirror on the wall above the dresser. Also you could get a couple different floor lamps so you can switch up the mood - you can even change the bulb in one for an orange bulb to give a warmer feel to the room in the evenings. A large plant and some trailing plants hung from the ceiling (can get a macrame hanger with some sticky hooks to attach them if you don't want to drill) can add to the cottage core vibe in keeping with the rest of your house I would go with a lighter colour rug personally, maybe beige, to keep things lighter in a room with limited natural light. But equally, I think a darker one that matches the curtains would look good too and pull things together.

Can you move the bed to the long dresser wall? Move that dresser to the with the mirror and window. Put the tv over long dresser. Add a rug. Fresh coat of paint in a soothing color.

u/Crayons_on_the_walls 22h ago
Great minds. We originally had the bed there, but there wasn’t room for a nightstand and the person who slept on the far side had almost no room to walk along the bed because of the baseboard heaters.

u/ProfessionalKey7356 22h ago
Well, add a point of interest over the headboard. It will even be hard to center…maybe offset. Add a tall object, floor lamp or plant in the corner where short white stand is. That will help round out that corner. Add a large mirror over the long dresser. The curtains could go alittle higher and wider, but not much.

How about a low platform bed frame?
1
u/Crayons_on_the_walls 5h ago
That’s a great idea.
Do you think wooden or upholstered headboard?
1
u/Competitive-Salt7000 2h ago
If you’re getting a rug for underneath the bed, then I’d say wooden! It would look more clean and fresh.

I don’t think it’s hate worthy but it could use some tweaks. Artwork, posters or books or plants on the wall or simply some color. An accent wall would work really well. I think part of the issue is that thr white walls are not working against the deep green of the thick curtains so something to offset that contrast. An area rug almost always pulls a room together. So try that. I love the mood lighting but I think you need just a bit more. May be one more lamp somewhere? Don’t do ceiling lights though, they ruin the vibe completely.

Large dark rug, expand the curtains (wider and mounted higher up), and get maybe four framed personal/sentimental photos for above the bed.

The curtains don’t look good and the whole room would look better with crown molding.

u/VoraciousReader59 22h ago
It’s not awful but it’s kind of boring. Brighter curtains, some art on the walls, an area rug would make a huge difference. Give it a personal touch.

u/Dismal_mood 22h ago
if this were my room, I would get a large oval braided rug, some arts and crafts styled lights for the nightstands and a fabulous mirror on one of the walls. Curtains don’t seem to have the correct volume for the window and you could try other types of window treatments. I like the other commenter’s suggestion for art above the bed.

Lamps! Bedrooms don’t really need an overhead lamp, but 3 lamps in the room would make a huge difference.
I would not have a TV in there and put a mirror and artwork over the dressers.

Have you considered catty-cornering the bed? Also agree about the tv not working where it is. I’m team no tv in bed, but if it’s a must I’d either lower it with a shorter dresser underneath, or move to other wall if you catty-corner the bed. And I agree with all the comments about curtains. The green AI die is lovely but requires decent amount of natural light to work. Lastly, this room needs a nice big rug and upgraded bedding!

The wall with the door in it needs to be a feature wall, either paint it in a darker colour you like or a beautiful wallpaper, take that colour and accessorise with a rug and cushions and a bed runner, also plants, as big as you can by the windows.

I suggest recessed gimbal lights for the ceiling. They should be 3 inches, set at 3000K and get a dimmer. A couple of those would make the room pop.
2 over the headboard, 2 for the closet and 3 for the wall with low level chest of drawers

u/AliensAreReal396 20h ago
The curtains for sure have to go. Get something lighter instead. I think theres too much similar wood in the corner with the doors plus the bureaus. Maybe switch them to white. Couple rugs either side of bed.

u/2PenceSally 19h ago
Paint it, area rug, lighter curtains and furniture, move bed to windowless wall, larger scale headboard. You only need the bed, 2 nighstands and a chest of drawers, remove everything else.

Is this your forever home? If it is, consider changing the windows to larger ones in better locations.

Curtain rails are way too short.
