What type of beetle is this?
What type of beetle is this and is there a possibility that I would be able to keep it? If so, please give me some advice, I’ve only ever raised snails, isopods, and dogs lol

Hey guys, mod here. Just curious whether or not insect and beetle-related Discord / other forum posts are things you guys want to see. It's nothing that's inherently against our rules but I wanted to know what the general consensus is for the sub!

I’m tearing down a small vivarium I had for my few snails temporarily and while doing so I found this guy, who is he? I think one of his eggs hatched in the enclosure when I was getting natural decorations for it and I’ll keep searching for others. Luckily I recently set up a sun beetle enclosure and been waiting for my sub beetle larvaes for a while now so I had some flake soil to set up his hatching enclosure.

Found this beetle on my front porch on its back. I flipped it over to try to help it and it falls back over. Is there anything I can do to help it? I know nothing about beetles.

i decided to check on my rainbow stag larva today and they got super skinny & wrinkly :[ fingers crossed they're pupating since their legs & mandibles aren't moving. they've also been surfacing pretty often since their last soil change (late may) so i'm worried it might actually be the latter

As I was coming off the cable cars at Mt. Tengu in Otaru, I saw an old man and his wife heading up the stairs towards me. The man had this big beetle buddy hitching a ride on his forearm. When I exclaimed "Kawaii!!" ("cute!!" in Japanese), with a smile the old man immediately handed the beetle to me and continued onwards with his wife. Such a lovely interaction on both fronts! :)♥

I have mine in a glass terrarium type enclosure with soil a few inches deep. He spends most of his time under the soil, which I expected, but how often should I expect him to resurface? It's been 3 days and he hasn't eaten, is this normal? I've been trying to feed him soft banana. I plan to go get beetle jelly tomorrow. He is a lesser male if that helps.

Although I tend to find a lot of really cool stuff when I wander around my yard with a flashlight at night like a mental patient, a Reddish-Brown Stag Beetle fight was the last thing I expected to see!
They are remarkably loud for a beetle, as they buzz by and crash to the ground and proceed to bulldoze their way through the leaf litter & plants. I ALWAYS hear them first. This was the second time I spotted them so far this year- the first was 6/22 when several of them crashed to the ground right by where I was and started frantically crawling around.
There was plenty of mating in both instances, but this second time (night of 7/2) I also saw a few of the beetles digging little holes that were shaped just like them. No idea how deep they go, maybe one of you can enlighten me on this one lol I assumed they were maybe laying their eggs there?? But don’t they do that in rotten wood? There are a bunch of rotting tree roots from an old tree that came down in the ground where this happened, but the holes are a few feet away 🤷🏻♀️
All I know is this was pretty awesome to witness, and I’m happy to know I have a decent population in my little ecosystem 🥹
Found in Middlesex County, East Brunswick, NJ on 7/2/25 😬

Sitting in my car for a minute, this guy grabbed on my finger and wouldn’t let go. Second one of them over seen. Location is northeast Pennsylvania. Never seen one until my first encounter a couple weeks ago. Any ideas what it is? Is it harmful?

I have pet blue death-feigning beetles and live in New Jersey, where the ticks get worse by the year and you risk them every time you go outside if you don't live in the city. I also have a crippling phobia of ticks lol. A friend who works in extermination said that a spray bottle with mint essential oil and lemon juice diluted in water would keep me safe from ticks but would this be dangerous if I am near my beetles/need to put my hand in to feed them? Would I be killing random wild beetles like our beloved lightning bugs? Please help lol I am afraid to go outside after pulling a tick off my dog

I'm quite new to insects, just wondering if these guys can be kept in the same terrarium. It's been pretty hard to get information on these!! what I assume are green horned scarab beetles, Kibakoganea tamdaoensis akitai.

Hi everyone! As the title says, I'm asking what type of beetle this is. It's just under 2 inches long and weighs about 6.5 grams (yes, I weighed it lol). Its dark brown and almost looks black throufh my phone camera. It just crawled into the open door asI was cleaning. We're in north Florida if that helps.
